Group testing is a well-studied approach for identifying defective items among a large amount of items by conducting a relatively small number of tests on pools of items. In this paper, we propose a novel method for generating quasi-random designs with constant pool sizes for noiseless non-adaptive group testing. Our approach incorporates insights from combinatorial properties to optimize the distribution of Hamming distances in pooling designs. Simulations with established practical decoding algorithms show that our quasi-random designs outperform existing random and quasi-random methods in both identification accuracy and stability. These improved designs have the potential to provide significant benefits for real-world applications of group testing, such as PCR testing in large populations and network security. © 2024 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

Resolution-aware beam scanning for joint detection and communication in ISAC systems

Beam scanning for joint detection and communication in integrated sensing and communication(ISAC) systems plays a critical role in continuous monitoring and rapid adaptation to dynamic environments. However, the design of sequential scanning beams for target detection with the required sensing resolution has not been tackled in the *** bridge this gap, this paper introduces a resolution-aware beam scanning design. In particular, the transmit information beamformer, the covariance matrix of the dedicated radar signal, and the receive beamformer are jointly optimized to maximize the average sum rate of the system while satisfying the sensing resolution and detection probability requirements.A block coordinate descent(BCD)-based optimization framework is developed to address the non-convex design problem. By exploiting successive convex approximation(SCA), S-procedure, and semidefinite relaxation(SDR), the proposed algorithm is guaranteed to converge to a stationary solution with polynomial time complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed design can efficiently handle the stringent detection requirement and outperform existing antenna-activation-based methods in the literature by exploiting the full degrees of freedom(DoFs) brought by all antennas.

Cocoa-Net: Performance Analysis on Classification of Cocoa Beans Using Structural Image Feature

The process of cocoa hybridization produces new types that have unique chemical properties impacting the manufacturing of chocolate yet are resistant to a number of plant illnesses. Image analysis is a valuable tool for visually differentiating cocoa beans where deep neural networks (DNN) play a pivotal role in implementing them. In this manuscript, we compare machine learning and deep learning models because it takes into consideration multiple images covering a wide range of agricultural products. Specifically, we extract features from images using a series of image processing techniques, following which we use both traditional machine learning methods (KNN, Decision tree, SVM, and Random Forest) and Convolutional Neural Networks (proposed Cocoa-Net and RESNET 50) to classify the cocoa beans into four categories: large, medium, small, and rejected. Since each methodology offers strong classification performance and has potential for use in the classification of food, they were all chosen. To test these methods, a dataset including 200 samples of fragmented images was utilized. Studies that compare various similar approaches are also carried out. Two optimization techniques: Univariate Selection and Feature Importance have been leveraged to optimize the retrieved features before the learning models are trained. The Adam optimizer is used to optimize the proposed Cocoa-Net model. K-fold cross validation is utilized to assess trained models, and mean cross validation scores are then computed for performance analysis. The empirical result shows that, the proposed Cocoa-Net model predicts with the highest classification accuracy score of 0.85. © 2024 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

In cognitive science, the term confusion is used to capture the decline in learners’ cognitive ability, which affects their ability to think, solve a problem, learn and understand. Unlike classroom education, in online e-learning contexts (e.g., in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)), confusion hinders the smooth evolution of the learning process from the learners’ side, as the educator can’t immediately interact with the students to restore cognitive equilibrium. This paper presents a Machine Learning (ML) based approach by comparing several classifiers that were trained and tested exploiting Electroencephalogram (EEG) data (namely, band power, attention and mediation features) acquired by the MindSet device to efficiently distinguish "Confused" from "Not-Confused" subjects. In particular, J48 was the dominant model reaching an optimal performance with accuracy, precision and recall equal to 99.9% and an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 100%. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study presents an edge-based system for underwater image enhancement using CLAHE and its fusion with various techniques. Utilizing the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano and the Streamlit framework, the system processes images in real-time. The enhancement methods include CLAHE, Fusion of CLAHE and USM, Fusion of CLAHE and HEF, and Blending CLAHE with Percentile Techniques. Tested on real underwater images, these methods demonstrate significant improvements in UIQM and UCIQE scores while reducing LOE. This combination boosts image quality while maintaining natural lightness, making it suitable for marine exploration, underwater robotics, and environmental monitoring. This study explores the use of the YOLOv5 algorithm to detect loose fruits palm oil in plantations, improve collection efficiency, and reduce reliance on manual labor. Loose fruits have high economic value due to their oil content, but they are often not collected, resulting in financial losses and the growth of weeds around oil palm trees. Conventional manual methods are often ineffective;thus, automatic detection is required. The dataset comprises 525 images of loose fruits, covering complex conditions on plantations, and secondary data from Roboflow, including nontarget objects, such as rocks and dry leaves, to train the model to accurately distinguish loose fruits. During training, several parameters were optimized: batch size, learning rate, optimizer type, weight decay, and momentum, which showed that small batch sizes provided higher mAP50 values, whereas large batches increased mAP50:95, indicating the ability to detect objects at higher levels of complexity. Testing in a scenario with loose fruits clearly visible and partially covered with leaves or grass showed that YOLOv5 could detect loose fruits well despite some constraints in the obstructed environment. The results of this study show that, with appropriate parameter settings, YOLOv5 can be a reliable basis for automated loose fruit collection systems, potentially improving operational efficiency in oil palm plantations and contributing to the development of automation in the agricultural sector. © 2025 IEEE.

A parametric rate-distortion model for video transcoding

Over the past two decades, the rise in video streaming has been driven by internet accessibility and the demand for high-quality video. To meet this demand across varying network speeds and devices, transcoding is essential. This paper introduces a parametric rate-distortion (R-D) transcoding model that predicts transcoding distortion at different bitrates without the need for re-encoding. Experimental results validate the model’s effectiveness in predicting rate-distortion behavior for diverse video content. Using our model, visual quality (measured by PSNR and VMAF) of transcoded video can be improved through trans-sizing. Moreover, our model can identify visually lossless bitrate ranges. This allows service providers to adjust target bitrates with minimal quality loss. Experimental results validate the model’s effectiveness in predicting rate-distortion behavior for diverse video content. By using the VMAF measure, our model achieves a quality improvement of up to 2.55 and bitrate savings of up to 79.10%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

A metamaterial-integrated space-time-coding (STC) transmitting array incorporating direct antenna modulation (DAM) is proposed in this work to detect the multitarget vital sign signals, including respiration and heart rates. A series metamaterial (MTM) zeroth-order power divider is used to uniformly distribute the carrier signal to each element of the array. DAM, applied to each antenna element, creates a 180° phase shift in the far-field while keeping the amplitude uniform, which is controlled via a programmed FPGA. By feeding specific time-modulated sequences to each antenna element, the radiation patterns of the resulting harmonic frequencies can be accurately directed toward different locations. Moreover, the modulation frequency is much less than the carrier frequency. This leads harmonic beam steering, to occupy a much narrower spectrum compared with frequency-dependent leaky wave antennas (LWAs), thereby enhancing spectral efficiency. The effectiveness of this MTM-integrated STC transmitting array in multitarget sensing is demonstrated through experimental tests involving various actuators and human subjects. © 2023 IEEE.

With the advancements in voltage source converter(VSC)technology,VSC based high voltage direct current(VSCHVDC)systems provide system operators with a prospective approach to enhance system operating stability and *** addition to long-distance transmission,the VSC-HVDC system can also provide multiple ancillary services,such as frequency regulation,due to its power ***,if a time delay exists in the control signal,the VSC-HVDC system may bring destabilizing influences to the system,which will decrease the system resilience under the *** order to reduce control deviation caused by time delay,in this paper,a small signal model is first conducted to analyze the impact of time delay on system *** a time-delay correction control strategy for HVDC frequency regulation control is developed to reduce the influence of the time *** control performance of the proposed time-delay correction control is verified both in the established small signal model and the runtime simulation in a modified IEEE 39 bus *** results indicate that the proposed time-delay correction control strategy shows significant improvement in system stability.

The security of digital images transmitted via the Internet or other public media is of the utmost *** encryption is a method of keeping an image secure while it travels across a non-secure communication medium where it could be intercepted by unauthorized *** study provides an approach to color image encryption that could find practical use in various *** proposed method,which combines four chaotic systems,employs singular value decomposition and a chaotic sequence,making it both secure and *** unified average change intensity,the number of pixels’change rate,information entropy analysis,correlation coefficient analysis,compression friendliness,and security against brute force,statistical analysis and differential attacks are all used to evaluate the algorithm’s *** a thorough investigation of the experimental data,it is concluded that the proposed image encryption approach is secure against a wide range of attacks and provides superior compression friendliness when compared to chaos-based alternatives.
