A binary decision task, like yes-no questions or answer verification, reflects a significant real-world scenario such as where users look for confirmation about the correctness of their decisions on specific issues. In this work, we observe that language models exhibit a negative bias in the binary decisions of complex reasoning tasks. Based on our observations and the rationale about attention-based model dynamics, we propose a negative attention score (NAS) to systematically and quantitatively formulate negative bias. Based on NAS, we identify attention heads that attend to negative tokens provided in the instructions as answer candidate of binary decisions, regardless of the question in the prompt, and validate their association with the negative bias. Additionally, we propose the negative attention score alignment (NASA) method, which is a parameter-efficient fine-tuning technique to address the extracted negatively biased attention heads. Experimental results from various domains of reasoning tasks and large model search space demonstrate that NASA significantly reduces the gap between precision and recall caused by negative bias while preserving their generalization abilities. The modified Allen test and a novel objective screening algorithm for hand collateral circulation using differential photoplethysmography for preoperative assessment: a pilot study

Hand-ischemia and artery-thrombosis are serious complications of hand artery cannulation/grafting. Screening the patency of hand arteries reduces the complications. Modified Allen Test (MAT), Barbeau's test, and Doppler/Duplex-ultrasonic test screen hand arterial patency. Each of them, however, either lacks objectivity, requires subject cooperation, or is not readily available in operating rooms. In this pilot study, we aim to provide a novel, objective, reliable, and inexpensive alternative using differential photo-plethysmography (PPG) measurement, and an artery selection algorithm. For 11 participants, MAT was executed, and PPG measurements of the thumb and little fingers were recorded for left and right hands separately. For each hand, four evaluations were conducted, then fed into the artery selection algorithm. Our proposed procedure has shown congruent results with the anatomy of blood circulation. It identified two arteries in two participants causing >50% blood reduction in the hand due to their occlusion. It also showed an elevated risk of accessing an artery in another 8 participants. Once the results of this study are confirmed in larger samples, the proposed procedure/algorithm may provide many indicators of the hand blood circulation, the effect of an artery occlusion on the hand, and a recommendation for selecting the best artery to access with the lowest possible complications. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

The capacitor placement in radial feeders is an efficient way to mitigate energy losses of distribution networks, where the power converted to useless heat is much higher than transmission system. These considerable power losses increase network operating costs and also decrease quality and quantity of delivered power. Shunt capacitors by compensating part of load reactive power reduce magnitude of feeder current and subsequent distribution losses. However, electricity demand variations with time affects power distributed through feeders and therefore have important role in energy losses determination. Thus, load variability may change the optimal places of capacitors, but considering whole load variations substantially increases the burden and computational time of capacitor placement problem in large-sized distribution systems. Therefore, current study poses an effective capacitor placement formulation for energy loss reduction in the presence of time-varying loads. The numerical results analysis demonstrates the good performance of the presented framework for the optimal placement of capacitor banks in radial distribution feeders with variable loads.

Morocco is one of the important producers of wheat in Africa, in which this crop is the first agricultural product in the country. In spite of obtaining a huge quantity of wheat residues in the Moroccan agriculture sector, a small portion of this great bioenergy resource is reused for energy generation in the country. This is a big challenge for Morocco because its energy sector highly depends on costly fossil fuel imports. Furthermore, the country has to decrease harmful gases emission based on the Paris and Kyoto agreements. Regarding the importance of rainfall amount and water resources available for this agricultural product that is the main feedstock of Moroccan food, the use of wheat biomass to produce energy will remove high pressure from both the national energy and agriculture sectors. Besides that, the problems related to crop residue removal are reduced by using wheat biomass. Also, the use of wheat residues for energy generation pushes farmers to prevent the open firing of wheat straws and unnecessary air pollutants release. Thus, the present paper, for the first time, calculates possible energy production from wheat straws and root biomasses in Morocco, aiming to provide useful information for Morocco's energy sector.

Efforts to map atomic-scale chemistry at low doses with minimal noise using electron microscopes are fundamentally limited by inelastic ***,fused multi-modal electron microscopy offers high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)recovery of material chemistry at nano-and atomic-resolution by coupling correlated information encoded within both elastic scattering(high-angle annular dark-field(HAADF))and inelastic spectroscopic signals(electron energy loss(EELS)or energy-dispersive x-ray(EDX)).By linking these simultaneously acquired signals,or modalities,the chemical distribution within nanomaterials can be imaged at significantly lower doses with existing detector *** many cases,the dose requirements can be reduced by over one order of *** high SNR recovery of chemistry is tested against simulated and experimental atomic resolution data of heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) aims to synthesize intermediate frames between existing frames to enhance visual smoothness and quality. Beyond the conventional methods based on the reconstruction loss, recent works have employed generative models for improved perceptual quality. However, they require complex training and large computational costs for pixel space modeling. In this paper, we introduce disentangled Motion Modeling (MoMo), a diffusion-based approach for VFI that enhances visual quality by focusing on intermediate motion modeling. We propose a disentangled two-stage training process. In the initial stage, frame synthesis and flow models are trained to generate accurate frames and flows optimal for synthesis. In the subsequent stage, we introduce a motion diffusion model, which incorporates our novel U-Net architecture specifically designed for optical flow, to generate bi-directional flows between frames. By learning the simpler low-frequency representation of motions, MoMo achieves superior perceptual quality with reduced computational demands compared to the generative modeling methods on the pixel space. MoMo surpasses state-of-the-art methods in perceptual metrics across various benchmarks, demonstrating its efficacy and efficiency in VFI. © 2025, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). Capacitor placement in electric power systems is an effective way to minimize energy losses, especially in distribution systems, where power losses are more than transmission ones. On the other hand, time-varying load levels affect energy losses amount in such networks. Therefore, load profile has an important role in determining the amount of power losses and the optimal place of shunt capacitors in radial feeders. However, embedding load variability in the capacitor placement problem enhances the computational burden and processing time, while its ignorance leads to inaccurate calculation of energy losses and subsequent optimal locations of capacitor banks. Hence, most of specialized studies have ignored load changes in their capacitor placement models because of computational burden and processing time increase. Accordingly, the present paper intent to evaluate the effect of consumption patterns on capacitor placement proposals in order to understand the importance of load variability consideration in reducing power losses through reactive power compensation. The analysis has been carried out using a mathematical programming language in several distribution systems.

Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications.

The rapid rise in usage of mobile devices have not shown any signs of flattening or slowing down. Some efforts in the standardization bodies are underway to define new ways to boost data rate, network capacity and lower the latency by enhancing existing 4G technologies and by incorporating new technologies in 5G. Since lower spectrum has fewer resources, the LTE of unlicensed spectrum LTE-U is being proposed to extend LTE to unlicensed spectrum. Streaming data traffic for licensed spectrum on LTE-U can improve the performance of the system significantly. In this paper LTE-U deployment by the LAA is implemented using the LBT mechanism on a flexible SDR testbed. © 2022 International Foundation for Telemetering. All rights reserved.
