Inelastic squared form factors of the vibronic states of B1Σu+, C1Πu, and EF1Σg+ for molecular hydrogen deuteride studied by fast electron scattering

A joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the valence-shell excitations of hydrogen deuteride has been performed by the fast electron impact method at an incident electron energy of 1500 eV and the multireference single- and double-excitation configuration-interaction method. Momentum-transfer-dependent inelastic squared form factors for the vibronic states belonging to the B1Σu+, C1Πu, and EF1Σg+ of molecular hydrogen deuteride have been derived with a high-energy resolution of 70 meV. Similar to the results of molecular hydrogen [L. Q. Xu, K. Xu, Y. G. Peng, X. Xu, Y. W. Liu, Y. Wu, K. Yang, N. Hiraoka, K. D. Tsuei, J. G. Wang, and L. F. Zhu, Phys. Rev. A 97, 032503 (2018)], the present calculations do not satisfactorily reproduce the profiles of the inelastic squared form factors for the higher vibronic states of the B1Σu+ of hydrogen deuteride. However, the discrepancies between the experimental and calculated results of the B1Σu+ of hydrogen deuteride show a weaker dependence on the vibronic number than those of molecular hydrogen, i.e., the present experimental results for the B1Σu+ of hydrogen deuteride are in better agreement with the calculated ones than those of the molecular hydrogen. It is very likely that the electronic-vibrational coupling effect in hydrogen deuteride is less important than that in molecular hydrogen. For the C1Πu state and some vibronic excitations of the EF1Σg+ state, the present experimental results are lower than the present calculations, which may be due to the fact that the first Born approximation does not hold at an incident electron energy of 1500 eV.

We propose a model for the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection with intracellular delay and prove the local asymptotical stability of the equilibrium points. Then we introduce a control function representing the efficiency of reverse transcriptase inhibitors and consider the pharmacological delay associated to the control. Finally, we propose and analyze an optimal control problem with state and control delays. In this paper, we consider the capillarity-driven evolution of a solid toroidal island on a flat rigid substrate, where mass transport is controlled by surface diffusion. This problem is representative of the geometrical complexity associated with the solid-state dewetting of thin films on substrates. We apply Onsager's variational principle to develop a general approach for describing surface diffusion-controlled problems. Based on this approach, we derive a simple, reduced-order model and obtain an analytical expression for the rate of island shrinking and validate this prediction by numerical simulations based on a full, sharp-interface model. We find that the rate of island shrinking is proportional to the material constants B and the surface energy density 0, and is inversely proportional to the island volume V0. This approach represents a general tool for modeling interface diffusion-controlled morphology evolution. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We consider the scaling properties characterizing the hyperuniformity (or anti-hyperuniformity) of long wavelength fluctuations in a broad class of one-dimensional substitution tilings. We present a simple argument that predicts the exponent α governing the scaling of Fourier intensities at small wavenumbers, tilings with α > 0 being hyperuniform, and confirm with numerical computations that the predictions are accurate for quasiperiodic tilings, tilings with singular continuous spectra, and limit-periodic tilings. Tilings with quasiperiodic or singular continuous spectra can be constructed with α arbitrarily close to any given value between −1 and 3. Limit-periodic tilings can be constructed with α between −1 and 1 or with Fourier intensities that approach zero faster than any power law. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The optimal tracking problem of the probability density function of a stochastic process can be expressed in terms of an optimal bilinear control problem for the Fokker-Planck equation, with the control in the coefficient of the divergence term. We analyze the case of time and space dependent controls. In order to deduce existence of nonnegative solutions for the state equation we require suitable integrability assumptions on the coefficients of the Fokker-Planck equation and thus on the control function. Furthermore, we establish the existence of optimal controls and we derive the associated first order necessary optimality conditions. © 2016

Finding the conditions that foster synchronization in networked oscillatory systems is critical to understanding a wide range of biological and mechanical systems. However, the conditions proved in the literature for synchronization in nonlinear systems with linear coupling, such as has been used to model neuronal networks, are in general not strict enough to accurately determine the system behavior. We leverage contraction theory to derive new sufficient conditions for cluster synchronization in terms of the network structure, for a network where the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of each node may differ. Our result requires that network connections satisfy a cluster-input-equivalence condition, and we explore the influence of this requirement on network dynamics. For application to networks of nodes with neuronal spiking dynamics, we show that our new sufficient condition is tighter than those found in previous analyses which used nonsmooth Lyapunov functions. Improving the analytical conditions for when cluster synchronization will occur based on network configuration is a significant step toward facilitating understanding and control of complex oscillatory systems. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) array which has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87∗ and Sagittarius A∗. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric "m-ring" model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87∗ taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT. © 2023, CC BY.

In the linear approximation we study long wave scattering on an axially symmetric flow in a shallow water basin with a drain in the center. Besides of academic interest, this problem is applicable to the interpretation of recent laboratory experiments with draining bathtub vortices, description of wave scattering in natural basins, and also can be considered as the hydrodynamic analogue of scalar wave scattering on a rotating black hole in general relativity. The analytic solutions are derived in the lowfrequency limit to describe both pure potential perturbations (surface gravity waves) and perturbations with nonzero potential vorticity. For the moderate frequencies the solutions are obtained numerically and illustrated graphically. It is shown that there are two processes governing the dynamics of surface perturbations, the scattering of incident gravity water waves by a central vortex, and emission of gravity water waves stimulated by a potential vorticity.
