Towards a Decision-Making Framework for Multi-Criteria Product Modularization in Cooperative Environments

Modular product family design is a strong strategy to offer a wide range of product variants economically. Many methods for designing and assessing modular product concepts are provided in literature - deciding between modular product structure alternatives, however, is still a challenging task, because of the many and unforeseeable effects on all product life-phases in combination with the high number of involved stakeholders. In addition, modularity alternatives cause multi-dimensional trade-offs that make the decision process a complex challenge. Current approaches to decide the product modularization tend to focus on the prediction of either internal or external consequences. Furthermore, they rarely consider the prevalent situation of a company’s internal tier structure with different organizational sections, responsible for different module design and supply. In this paper, we investigate modularity decision problems and introduce an innovative framework and modularity decision dashboard, considering internal and external variety evaluation, conflicting objectives of stakeholders as well as company-internal tier structures of component, module and product suppliers. The approach builds on the integrated PKT-approach for developing modular product families, recent findings in complexity cost evaluation, effects of modularization and modularity decision problems. An industrial application at a modularization strategy project in an international powertool company is presented and proves basic validity of the framework and the process model. The results of the study demonstrate how an applicable modularity decision dashboard can facilitate cooperative decision-making and leads to a balanced variety for the electromotor module portfolio in an industrial environment.

As mobile computing is now becoming more and more popular, the security threats to mobile applications are also growing explosively. Mobile app flaws and security defects could open doors for hackers to break into them and access sensitive information. Most vulnerabilities should be addressed in the early stage of mobile software development. However, many software development professionals lack awareness of the importance of security vulnerability and the necessary security knowledge and skills at the development stage. The combination of the prevalence of mobile devices and the rapid growth of mobile threats has resulted in a shortage of secure software development professionals. Many schools offer mobile app development courses in computing curriculum; however, secure software development is not yet well represented in most schools' computing curriculum. This paper addresses the needs of authentic and active pedagogical learning materials for SSD and challenges of building Secure software development (SSD) capacity through effective, engaging, and investigative approaches. In this paper, we present an innovative authentic and active SSD learning approach through a collection of transferrable learning modules with hands-on companion labs based on the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) recommendations. The preliminary feedback from students is positive. Students have gained hands-on real world SSD learning experiences with Android mobile platform and also greatly promoted self-efficacy and confidence in their mobile SSD learning.

Data extraction from files is a prevalent activity in today's electronic health record systems which can be laborious. When document analysis is repetitive (e.g., processing a series of files with the same layout and extraction requirements), relying on data-entry staff to manually perform such tasks is costly and highly insecure. Particularly analyzing a large list of PDF files (as a widely used format) to extract specific data and migrate them to other destinations for later use is both tedious and frustrating to do manually. This paper addresses a very practical requirement of batch extracting data from PDF files in health data document analysis. Specifically, we propose a Coordinate Based Information Extraction System (CBIES) to instrument a smart and automatic PDF batch data extraction tool, releasing health organizations from duplicate efforts and reducing labor costs. The proposed technique enables users to query a representative PDF document and extract the same data from a series of files in the batch analysis manner swiftly. Furthermore, since security and privacy considerations are essential part of any health record systems, it is included in our approach. Based on CBIES, we implement a prototype tool for PDF batch data extraction technique named, CyberPDF. The tool exhibits great efficiency, security and accuracy in multi-file data processing, supported through an empirical evaluation in this research.

While the mobile applications are increasing dramatically, the mobile security threat landscape is also growing explosively. The malicious malware may attack vulnerable mobile apps to get personal or enterprise confidential data anywhere and anytime. Most vulnerabilities should be addressed and fixed in the early stage of mobile software development. However, many development professionals lack the awareness of the importance of security vulnerability and the necessary secure knowledge and skills at the development stage. Also, secure software development is still a relatively weak area and is not well represented in most schools' computing curriculum. This poster addresses the needs and challenges of the lack of pedagogical materials and real world learning environment in Secure Mobile software development (SMSD) through effective, engaging, and investigative authentic learning approaches.

Combining exercises with game elements (exergaming) is a promising approach to increase physical activity of users not intrinsically motivated to exercise. Multiplayer games are particularly promising, since they add a social (competitive or collaborative) component. However, exercising together can become frustrating if users have vastly different abilities. In this paper, we review existing approaches for balancing differing physical abilities of players in competitive exergames, and based on this, we propose a novel exertion-based balancing formula. In contrast to previous work, we evaluate exertion-based balancing formulas with a moderately complex gameplay and show that it results in closer competitive gameplay and a more enjoyable game experience. The proposed formula can be applied to a wide variety of exergames and has the potential to increase compliance and long-term use of exergames. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. Composting is gaining popularity as a sustainable means for the recycling of organic waste, and this technique has positive implications for water quality protection, waste management, and sustainable farming. However, the nutrient content of compost, particularly compost made from municipal solid waste (MSW), is often not sufficient for use in large-scale agriculture. Therefore, the conservation of nitrogen in composting is a subject of current research interest. In this study, compostible MSW materials (yard trimmings and food scraps) were treated in pi-lot-scale batch reactors. Various process modifications and improvement techniques were test-ed in pilot-scale batches. The addition of shredded paper, strong acid, or acid-loaded bentonite clay to the batches all proved to be successful in increasing nitrogen concentrations by 25% to 125% compared to unmodified control batches. The collection of compost leachate also ap-pears to be a viable technique to conserve nitrogen in MSW composting. © 2017 by Widener University.

Modular product structure, respectively, platform definition is challenging for decision makers such as project managers or managers which are responsible for a product portfolio. Decisions with influence on modularity of the product family or the product portfolio have effects on internal and external variety and thus induce desired and non-desired effects in firms. This paper describes the problem of balancing effects induced by modularity and introduces modularity-induced opportunity cost as a perspective to the problem.

Creating simulations for multi-agent multi-team interactions is a daunting task. It is non-trivial to compose a situation where each individual agent maintains their own 'personality' while still following the assigned policy dictated by a team's central command. Further, the complexity is inflated by ensuring that each of these agent policies is coordinated into a cohesive team strategy. Finally, peaking the complexity, is evaluating the performance of the team's strategy against other teams' strategies in real-time. This is the work of this paper, proposing SIMAMT, the simulation space for multi-agent multi-team engagements, and testing it. We will first cover the system and how well it models the virtual environment for strategic interaction. Second, we will deliver results from a practical test of strategy inference within such an environment using the SIE (Strategy Inference Engine).

In order to improve the efficiency of the method by clustering outlier detection, outlier mining algorithm based on approximate outlier factor (OMAAOF) algorithm based on approximate outlier factor is proposed in this paper. The algorithm first presents the definition of the approximate distance and outlier approximate coefficient, then provides an heuristic pruning strategies to reduce the suspect candidate sets to decrease the computational complexity. Experiments have been carried out with public datasets iris, labour and segment-test. The experimental results show that the performance of OMAAOF is effective. © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A recent development of heterogeneous platforms (i.e. those containing different types of computational units such as multicore CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs) has enabled significant improvements in performance for real-time data processing. This potential, however, is still not fully utilized due to the lack of methods for optimal configuration of software;the allocation of different software components to different computational unit types is crucial for getting the maximal utilization of the platform, but for more complex systems it is difficult to find ad-hoc a good enough or the best configuration. With respect to system and user defined constraints, in this paper we are applying analytical hierarchical process and a genetic algorithm to find feasible, locally optimal solution for allocating software components to computational units.
