Cracked ductile structures yield locally to form a plastic zone (pz) around their crack tips, which size and shape controls their structural behaviour. Classical pz estimates are based solely on stress intensity factors (SIF), but their precision is limited to very low σn/SY nominal stress to yield strength ratios. Ta-stresses are frequently used to correct SIFa-based pz estimates, but both SIF and SIF plus Ta-stress pz estimates are based on truncated linear elastic (LE) stress fields that do not satisfy boundary conditions. Using Griffith's plate complete LE stress field to avoid such truncated pz estimates, the influence of its Williams' series terms on pz estimation is evaluated, showing that Ta-stress improvements are limited to medium σn/SY values. Then, corrections are proposed to introduce equilibrium requirements into LE pz estimates. Finally, these improved estimates are compared with pz calculated numerically by an elastic-plastic finite element analysis. © 2012 Wiley Publishing Ltd.

games take many forms, including educational environments. Alice is an example of an engaging environment that teaches object-oriented programming through the development of animations. The AliceVI project sought to extent Alice to visually impaired users. This paper describes how the architectural of Alice impacted the ability to add accessibility features. The result has been to start a system, named BridgIT, from scratch. The technology and proposed architecture is discussed for the new system, which takes the tenets of Alice to a new group of users. © 2011 ACM.

Parallel disk systems consume a significant amount of energy due to the large number of disks. To design economically attractive and environmentally friendly parallel disk systems, in this paper we design and evaluate an energy-aware prefetching strategy for parallel disk systems consisting of a small number of buffer disks and large number of data disks. Using buffer disks to temporarily handle requests for data disks, we can keep data disks in the low-power mode as long as possible. Our prefetching algorithm aims to group many small idle periods in data disks to form large idle periods, which in turn allow data disks to remain in the standby state to save energy. To achieve this goal, we utilize buffer disks to aggressively fetch popular data from regular data disks into buffer disks, thereby putting data disks into the standby state for longer time intervals. A centrepiece in the prefetching mechanism is an energy-saving prediction model, based on which we implement the energy-saving calculation module that is invoked in the prefetching algorithm. We quantitatively compare our energy-aware prefetching mechanism against existing solutions, including the dynamic power management strategy. Experimental results confirm that the buffer-disk-based prefetching can significantly reduce energy consumption in parallel disk systems by up to 50 percent. In addition, we systematically investigate the energy efficiency impact that varying disk power parameters has on our prefetching algorithm.

An Integrated software Environment For Powertrain Feasibility Assessment Using Optimization And Optimal Control

Sivashankar During the summer of 1993 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Naval Postgraduate School Monterey CA where he worked on control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles. From 1993 to 2000 he was with Ford Research Laboratory working on several design aspects of powertrain control systems and processes for embedded control software development. He is currently the Vice President for Technology at Emmeskay Incorporated a company that provides systems engineering based products and services. His research interests include modeling and control of automotive systems application of systems engineering methods and tools to product development processes and multivariable robust control and estimation methods. Dr. Sivashankar has served as an associate editor for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems Measurement and Control.

With the increase in automotive powertrain complexity, an upfront assessment of powertrain capability in meeting its design targets is important early on in the development programs. The optimization of control policy based on powertrain simulation models can facilitate this assessment and establish limits of achievable performance for a given powertrain configuration and parameters. The paper discusses several computational optimization and user interface solutions for deploying a numerical optimal control approach in a user-friendly software environment.

Approximating the savior trajectory of a fighter under missile threat is aimed in this study. Like our previous work, this paper is a part of the ongoing academic project, the Visual End-game Simulation. A realistic generic fighter model is used as the target of a missile that employs proportional navigation system. For a fighter in the cone of a missile seeker, finding the closest point of this cone and applying the suitable commands to evade out on that point is taken as the objective function. Taking into account both the state and control variable inequality constraints, the three-dimensional evasion trajectory is sought. Example trajectories and control histories are shown. Also, the horizontal-s maneuver, of which the optimally is already proven, is analyzed by applying predefined controls in order to compare to our solution.

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.
