Assistive mobile applications play a pivotal role for visually impaired individuals worldwide. These applications often face challenges in currency recognition due to varying perspectives, inconsistent illumination, and background clutter. This issue is especially pressing in developing countries like Thailand, where there is a notable gap in robust currency recognition systems, particularly for the new Thai currency notes. This study employs a deep learning approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automate the recognition of the new Thai currency notes. Using transfer learning, we fine-tuned the CNN using the Xception model, renowned for its depth-wise separable convolution. The network trained on a meticulously curated dataset comprising 3600 images (without data augmentation) of five different denominations of the new Thai currency (20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 baht) notes, captured under various conditions. The resulting model achieved an average training accuracy of 99.5% and a validation accuracy of 99.8%. Given its robustness and high accuracy, the model can be integrated into an Android application. Such an application would offer a user-friendly and reliable tool for visually impaired individuals to effortlessly identify the new Thai currency notes in their everyday transactions. © 2024 IEEE.

Parkinson's disease ranks as the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder globally. This research aims to develop a system leveraging Mixed Reality capabilities for tracking and assessing eye movements. In this paper, we present a medical scenario and outline the development of an application designed to capture eye-tracking signals through Mixed Reality technology for the evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, we introduce a pipeline for extracting clinically relevant features from eye-gaze analysis, describing the capabilities of the proposed system from a medical perspective. The study involved a cohort of healthy control individuals and patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, showcasing the feasibility and potential of the proposed technology for non-intrusive monitoring of eye movement patterns for the diagnosis of neurodegenerative *** relevance - Developing a non-invasive biomarker for Parkinson' s disease is urgently needed to accurately detect the disease's onset. This would allow for the timely introduction of neuroprotective treatment at the earliest stage and enable the continuous monitoring of intervention outcomes. The ability to detect subtle changes in eye movements allows for early diagnosis, offering a critical window for intervention before more pronounced symptoms emerge. Eye tracking provides objective and quantifiable biomarkers, ensuring reliable assessments of disease progression and cognitive function. The eye gaze analysis using Mixed Reality glasses is wireless, facilitating convenient assessments in both home and hospital settings. This paper presents an innovative method for safeguarding audio files. The proposed technique leverages an advanced primary key with a complex structure, offering a vast keyspace resistant to hacking. The private key includes details for segmenting the speech audio file and generating unique chaotic keys for encryption. These keys are extremely sensitive to minor changes in the primary key, flagging any slight alteration during decryption as a hacking attempt. The method is tested and implemented on various speech signals, with the results analyzed to highlight the main features and improvements. The findings demonstrate how the technique improves encryption and decryption by optimizing metrics such as MSE, PSNR, CC, and NSCR. Speed analysis verifies the method’s performance by maximizing the throughput of the speech cryptography process. The results are compared with existing approaches to show the superiority and enhancements provided. This method is straightforward to implement, as it does not require modifying the algorithm when altering the speech audio file or the private key, making it a versatile solution for various speech encryption needs. This research is highly relevant to network security, as it ensures the integrity and confidentiality of transmitted speech signals, preventing unauthorized access and improving overall communication security. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are efficient tools for pattern recognition applications. They have found applications in wireless communication systems such as modulation classification from constellation diagrams. Unfortunately, noisy channels may render the constellation points deformed and scattered, which makes the classification a difficult task. This paper presents an efficient modulation classification algorithm based on CNNs. Constellation diagrams are generated for each modulation type and used for training and testing of the CNNs. The proposed work depends on the application of Radon Transform (RT) to generate more representative patterns for the constellation diagrams to be used for training and testing. The RT has a good ability to represent discrete points in the spatial domain as curved lines. Several pre-trained networks including AlexNet, VGG-16, and VGG-19 are used as classifiers for modulation type from the spatial-domain constellation diagrams or their RTs. Several simulation experiments are presented in this paper to compare different scenarios for modulation classification at different Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and fading channel conditions. © 2022, The Author(s).

This paper presents the development of a network of mobile sensors for the real-time monitoring of the atmospheric air in order to calculate the Air Quality Index (AQI). As a proof of concept, a prototype of the sensor, a web application and a mobile application were implemented in order to manage the mobile sensors and process/view the data collected by them. The sensor, which can be installed in vehicles, collects and transmits environmental measurements wirelessly to a web application using proper APIs. These measurements are stored in a database and based on them, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is calculated. Following a publish-subscribe model, real-time data are forwarded to authorized users for monitoring purposes in the form of charts and tables. Historical data are used for analysis and study of the air quality over time and also used as an input to the Random Forest predictive algorithm implemented to predict air quality in locations without availability of real-time measurements. Monitoring air quality through mobile sensors constitutes a valuable tool towards the study of air pollution in large areas overcoming the limitations of fixed sensors. Furthermore, the immediate notifications of high-precision AQIs help people with respiratory problems to take timely protection measures. © 2023 ACM.

In realistic distributed optimization scenarios, individual nodes possess only partial information and communicate over bandwidth constrained channels. For this reason, the development of efficient distributed algorithms is essential. In our paper we addresses the challenge of unconstrained distributed optimization. In our scenario each node's local function exhibits strong convexity with Lipschitz continuous gradients. The exchange of information between nodes occurs through 3-bit bandwidth-limited channels (i.e., nodes exchange messages represented by a only 3 -bits). Our proposed algorithm respects the network's bandwidth constraints by leveraging zoom-in and zoom-out operations to adjust quantizer parameters dynamically. We show that during our algorithm's operation nodes are able to converge to the exact optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm achieves a linear convergence rate to the optimal solution. We conclude the paper with simulations that highlight our algorithm's unique characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.

Geomagnetic disturbances are a threat to the reliability and security of our national critical energy infrastructures. These events specifically result in geomagnetically induced currents, which can cause damage to transformers due to magnetic saturation. In order to mitigate these effects, blocker devices must be placed in optimal locations. Finding this placement requires a dc representation of the ac transmission lines, which this paper discusses. Different decisions in this process, including the method of representing the blocking devices, result in significant variations to the power loss calculations. To analyze these effects, we conclude the paper by comparing the losses on a sample network with different modeling implementations. © 2025 IEEE.

The limitations of conventional techniques necessitate the development of new diagnostic strategies for early detection of skin cancer, the most prevalent form of cancer. This investigation investigates the application of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) in creating a dependable and automated skin cancer detection system. The primary goal is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of SNNs for this purpose. The methodology entails using the SpikingJelly framework to create and assess an SNN-based model, specifically a modified Spiking VGG-11. Focusing on images classified as melanoma or non-melanoma, the investigation employs the ISIC 2019 dataset. The Spiking VGG-11 model, which features approximately 15 million parameters, achieved a test accuracy of 81.3%, specificity of 81.7%, and precision of 81.5%. This performance is noteworthy in light of its reduced complexity compared to models such as the Spiking VGG-13, which has approximately 134 million parameters. The model's high specificity is especially advantageous in clinical environments, as it minimizes false positives and unnecessary testing. These results emphasize the potential of SNNs to offer diagnostic tools that are both efficient and effective in the detection of skin cancer. These findings underscore the potential of SNNs to enhance the early detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, offering a promising alternative to conventional diagnostic methods. © 2024 IEEE.
