Autonomous mobile robots (AMR) operating in the real world often need to make critical decisions that directly impact their own safety and the safety of their surroundings. Learning-based approaches for decision making have gained popularity in recent years, since decisions can be made very quickly and with reasonable levels of accuracy for many applications. These approaches, however, typically return only one decision, and if the learner is poorly trained or observations are noisy, the decision may be incorrect. This problem is further exacerbated when the robot is making decisions about its own failures, such as faulty actuators or sensors and external disturbances, when a wrong decision can immediately cause damage to the robot. In this paper, we consider this very case study: a robot dealing with such failures must quickly assess uncertainties and make safe decisions. We propose an uncertainty aware learning-based failure detection and recovery approach, in which we leverage Decision Tree theory along with Model Predictive Control to detect and explain which failure is compromising the system, assess uncertainties associated with the failure, and lastly, find and validate corrective controls to recover the system. Our approach is validated with simulations and real experiments on a faulty unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) navigation case study, demonstrating recovery to safety under uncertainties.

CosSIF: Cosine similarity-based image filtering to overcome low inter-class variation in synthetic medical image datasets

Crafting effective deep learning models for medical image analysis is a complex task, particularly in cases where the medical image dataset lacks significant inter-class variation. This challenge is further aggravated when employing such datasets to generate synthetic images using generative adversarial networks (GANs), as the output of GANs heavily relies on the input data. In this research, we propose a novel filtering algorithm called Cosine Similarity-based Image Filtering (CosSIF). We leverage CosSIF to develop two distinct filtering methods: Filtering Before GAN Training (FBGT) and Filtering After GAN Training (FAGT). FBGT involves the removal of real images that exhibit similarities to images of other classes before utilizing them as the training dataset for a GAN. On the other hand, FAGT focuses on eliminating synthetic images with less discriminative features compared to real images used for training the GAN. The experimental results reveal that the utilization of either the FAGT or FBGT method reduces low inter-class variation in clinical image classification datasets and enables GANs to generate synthetic images with greater discriminative features. Moreover, modern transformer and convolutional-based models, trained with datasets that utilize these filtering methods, lead to less bias toward the majority class, more accurate predictions of samples in the minority class, and overall better generalization capabilities. The scheduling problem for federated learning (FL) with multiple models in a distributed network is challenging, as it involves NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear programming. Moreover, it requires optimal participant selection and learning rate determination among multiple FL models to avoid high training costs and resource competition. To overcome those chal-lenges, in literature the Benders' decomposition algorithm (BD) can deal with mixed integer problems, however, it still suffers from limited scalability. To address this issue, in this paper, we present the Hybrid Quantum-Classical Benders' Decomposition (HQCBD) algorithm, which combines the power of quantum and classical computing to solve the joint participant selection and learning scheduling problem in multi-model FL. HQCBD decomposes the optimization problem into a master problem with binary variables and small subproblems with continuous variables. This collaboration maximizes the potential of both quantum and classical computing, and optimizes the complex joint optimization problem. Simulation on the commercial D-Wave quantum annealing machine demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, with up to 18% improvement of iterations and 81% improvement of computation time over BD algorithm on classical CPUs even at small scales. © 2023 IEEE.

Recommendation systems are pivotal in industries like entertainment, where competitiveness is intense. This study enhances movie recommendations by utilizing rich datasets from IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, incorporating movie ratings, user profiles, audience scores, and critics' reviews. These elements were subjected to sentiment analysis to refine the data quality. We explored three filtering techniques: content-based, which analyzes movie features;collaborative, which processes user behavior patterns;and hybrid, combining both to leverage their strengths. The effectiveness of these methods was assessed using Mean Average Precision at k (MAP-k) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), with our results showing notable improvements in recommendation accuracy. For instance, the hybrid method achieved a MAP ©k of 0.271 and an RMSE of 0.634, indicating enhanced precision and reliability of the recommendations. These findings suggest significant potential for improving user satisfaction and retention in digital platforms, demonstrating the benefit of integrating diverse data sources and analytical techniques in recommendation systems.

A popular robust alternative of the classic principal component analysis (PCA) is the \ell 1-norm PCA (L1-PCA), which aims to find a subspace that captures the most variation in a dataset as measured by the \ell 1-norm. L1-PCA has shown great promise in alleviating the effect of outliers in data analytic applications. However, it gives rise to a challenging nonsmooth, nonconvex optimization problem, for which existing algorithms are either not scalable or lack strong theoretical guarantees on their convergence behavior. In this paper, we propose a proximal alternating minimization method with extrapolation (PAMe) for solving a two-block reformulation of the L1-PCA problem. We then show that for both the L1-PCA problem and its two-block reformulation, the Kurdyka-\Lojasiewicz exponent at any of the limiting critical points is 1/2. This allows us to establish the linear convergence of the sequence of iterates generated by PAMe and to determine the criticality of the limit of the sequence with respect to both the L1-PCA problem and its two-block reformulation. To complement our theoretical development, we show via numerical experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets that PAMe is competitive with a host of existing methods. Our results not only significantly advance the convergence theory of iterative methods for L1-PCA but also demonstrate the potential of our proposed method in applications. © 2023 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Publications. A frequency-selective fast-fading channel degrades the performance of a signal as it introduces inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). Equalization is the process of eliminating ISI and ICI by adaptively updating the tap weights of the FIR filter. The work presented utilizes various heuristic computational techniques (HCTs) to adaptively update the weights for doubly selective channel equalization (DSCE). Various HCTs are also compared, including genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), cat swarm optimization (CSO), bee colony optimization (BCO), hybrid GA-PSO (HGP), and the cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). Extensive simulations were performed in MATLAB, and the simulation results show that PSO outperforms the other HCTs in terms of computational time complexity and FoM. In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.

This work is a full research-to-practice paper that describes a predictive method to improve the prediction of student test scores. Predicting student test scores is difficult. However, doing so can improve education greatly by improving advising, scheduling, tutoring assignment and other educational processes. This research extends previous research by using a domain space reduction technique to improve accuracy. Factor Analysis is used to reduce the number of domain attributes for improving the accuracy of a Neural Network to predict student test scores. In this research datasets for Mathematics and Language of high school student test scores were used. Test scores were predicted using a Neural Network computing the Mean Absolute Error as a measurement of accuracy. The datasets have 30 domain attributes each. Factor Analysis was used to reduce the domain size from between 1 to 29, each time using it to train the Neural Network. Because the Mean Absolute Error may vary depending upon which records in the dataset are used for training versus testing, 50 trials of each dataset size were executed producing an Average Mean Absolute Error for each domain size. A statistical test was used to show statistical significance between the Neural Network without Factor Analysis and the Neural Network with varying domain sizes using Factor Analysis. Results were very promising and correspond to previous research that used Principal Component Analysis. Numerous domain sizes had significantly better Average Mean Absolute Errors than the accuracy of the Neural Network without Factor Analysis. This research shows that reducing the domain size using Factor Analysis can greatly improve the accuracy of Neural Networks when predicting student test scores. The best improvements occurred when domain sizes were very small ranging from 2 to 6. Domain reduction techniques, such as Factor Analysis, have been shown to improve predictive models for student test score prediction. Future research

The development and optimisation of energy-efficient communication protocols that are specifically adapted for Internet of Things (IoT) devices is the focus of this research. The proliferation of interoperable bias has given rise to the converse girding energy consumption, which has come a consummate concern in the contemporary period. The primary end of this bid is to probe innovative approaches and protocols with the capacity to reduce the energy consumption of Internet of Effects(IoT) connections. As a result, the bias will retain the capability to attain an extended functional lifetime while coincidently producing a lowered environmental footmark. The presented protocols aim to achieve a result that balances the utilisation of energy coffers with the conservation of dependable communication. A thorough examination of the presently employed protocols, coupled with the perpetration of sophisticated optimisation ways, will be the styles employed to achieve this thing. Theprovides a significant donation to the development and prosecution of communication protocols that effectively address the unique energy constraints encountered by Internet of effects(10T)- connected ecosystems. This contributes to the enhancement of effectiveness and sustainability in the world of networked bias, which is expanding at an accelerated rate. © 2024 IEEE.
