Q-switched triple-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser with black phosphorus absorber

We achieved a notable advance in laser technology by generating a triple-wavelength output in a Q-switched Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) using a new black phosphorous saturable absorber (BPSA). The BPSA was made by exfoliating multilayer BP material from a bulk crystal and transferring it onto a fiber ferrule tip. Upon integration into an EDFL ring cavity, this BPSA facilitated the production of Q-switched pulses at wavelengths of 1530.4, 1531.5, and 1532.6 nm. This distinctive triple-wavelength lasing phenomenon, characterized by uniform spacing, arises from standing wave interference within the ring cavity, leveraging the highly nonlinear active gain medium. With an increase in pumping strength from 147 mW to 223 mW, the repetition rate escalated from 41.15 to 60.83 kHz, accompanied by a reduction in pulse width from 8.45 µs to 6.06 µs. Notably, the highest recorded pulse energy peaked at 11.8 nJ. These findings highlight the efficacy of BP as a Q-switcher for the generation of multi-wavelength pulses, marking a significant advancement in laser technology. © 2024 Elsevier GmbH

Indirect speech acts (ISAs) are a natural pragmatic feature of human communication, allowing requests to be conveyed implicitly while maintaining subtlety and flexibility. Although advancements in speech recognition have enabled natural language interactions with robots through direct, explicit commands - providing clarity in communication - the rise of large language models presents the potential for robots to interpret ISAs. However, empirical evidence on the effects of ISAs on human-robot collaboration (HRC) remains limited. To address this, we conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study (N=36), engaging a participant and a robot in collaborative physical tasks. Our findings indicate that robots capable of understanding ISAs significantly improve human's perceived robot anthropomorphism, team performance, and trust. However, the effectiveness of ISAs is task- and context-dependent, thus requiring careful use. These results highlight the importance of appropriately integrating direct and indirect requests in HRC to enhance collaborative experiences and task performance. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Error budget of a parametric resonance entangling gate with a tunable coupler

We analyze the experimental error budget of parametric resonance gates in a tunable coupler architecture. We identify and characterize various sources of errors, including incoherent, leakage, amplitude, and phase errors. By varying the two-qubit gate time, we explore the dynamics of these errors and their impact on the gate fidelity. To accurately capture the impact of incoherent errors on gate fidelity, we measure the coherence times of qubits under gate operating conditions. Our findings reveal that the incoherent errors, mainly arising from qubit relaxation and dephasing due to white noise, limit the fidelity of the two-qubit gates. Moreover, we demonstrate that leakage to noncomputational states is the second largest contributor to the two-qubit gates infidelity, as characterized using leakage-randomized benchmarking. The error budgeting methodology we develop here can be effectively applied to other types of gate implementations.

Learning-enabled controllers have been adopted in various cyber-physical systems (CPS). When a learning-enabled controller fails to accomplish its task from a set of initial states, researchers leverage repair algorithms to fine-tune the controller’s parameters. However, existing repair techniques do not preserve previously correct behaviors. Specifically, when modifying the parameters to repair trajectories from a subset of initial states, another subset may be compromised. Therefore, the repair may break previously correct scenarios, introducing new risks that may not be accounted for. Due to this issue, repairing the entire initial state space may be hard or even infeasible. As a response, we formulate the Repair with Preservation (RwP) problem, which calls for preserving the already-correct scenarios during repair. To tackle this problem, we design the Incremental Simulated Annealing Repair (ISAR) algorithm, which leverages simulated annealing on a barriered energy function to safeguard the already-correct initial states while repairing as many additional ones as possible. Moreover, formal verification is utilized to guarantee the repair results. Case studies on an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) and OpenAI Gym Mountain Car (MC) show that ISAR not only preserves correct behaviors from previously verified initial state regions, but also repairs 81.4% and 23.5% of broken state spaces in the two benchmarks. Moreover, the average signal temporal logic (STL) robustnesses of the ISAR repaired controllers are larger than those of the controllers repaired using baseline methods.

Image restoration is a popular and challenge task, which is regarded as a classical inverse problem. Condat-Vu primal-dual algorithm based on proximal operator is one of successful optimization methods. It is further reformulated as a primal-dual proximal network, where one iteration in the original algorithm corresponds to one layer in the network. The drawback of primal-dual network is that blur kernels should be given as prior information, however, it is usually very hard to be known in the real situation. In this work, we propose a deep encoder-decoder primal-dual proximal network, named ED-PDPNet. In each layer, the blur kernels and the projections between the primal and dual variables are designed as encoder-decoder modules, in this way, the network can be learned in an end-to-end way and all the parameters in the primal-dual algorithm are learned. The proposed method is applied on the MNIST and BSD68 datasets for image restoration. The preliminary results show that the proposed method by combining simple encoder-decoder modules obtained very promising and competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the proposed network is shown to be a lightweight network with fewer learning parameters in comparison to the recent popular transformer-based method. © 2024 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) offers a solution to current traffic congestion by using electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles to provide on-demand air mobility in urban areas. Effective traffic management is crucial for efficient operation of UAM systems, especially for high-demand scenarios. In this paper, we present a centralized framework for conflict-free takeoff scheduling of eVTOLs in on-demand UAM systems. Specifically, we provide a scheduling policy, called VertiSync, which jointly schedules UAM vehicles for servicing trip requests and rebalancing, subject to safety margins and energy requirements. We characterize the system-level throughput of VertiSync, which determines the demand threshold at which the average waiting time transitions from being stable to being increasing over time. We show that the proposed policy maximizes throughput for sufficiently large fleet size and if the UAM network has a certain symmetry property. We demonstrate the performance of VertiSync through a case study for the city of Los Angeles, and show that it significantly reduces average passenger waiting time compared to a first-come first-serve scheduling policy.
