Topology optimization in decentralised federated learning settings enables the design of policies aimed at minimizing the number of communication rounds needed to reach algorithmic convergence. Given a federation of autonomous agents, finding the optimal topology which guarantees that the underlying graph is connected is still an open issue. This paper proposes a novel energy-aware topology optimization algorithm with the goal to derive an optimal topology which maximizes the algebraic connectivity of the corresponding graph in presence of energy and communication constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated in the context of a consensus-based federated learning algorithm over an e-Health scenario. © 2024 IEEE.

This study presents a dipper-throated-based ant colony optimization (DTACO) with the Seasonal Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average with eXogenous factor (SARIMAX) model (DTACO+SARIMAX) to forecast monkeypox cases. The work optimizes the SARIMAX model using grid search cross-validation and fine-tunes its hyperparameters using DTACO to improve prediction accuracy. The suggested model's consistency and accuracy are considerable compared to previous studies. Comparisons with state-of-the-art models validate the proposed model's predictions. DTACO+SARIMAX can be used to control disease and monitor monkeypox. Healthcare organizations and governments can better manage and track the pandemic's course by offering accurate predictions, reducing public panic, and enabling effective pandemic planning. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests are conducted on the proposed DTACO-SARIMAX model and compared models. © 2023 IEEE.

This work incorporates an adaptive learning-based boosting (ADboost) ML classifier to classify four types of fuel: agricultural residue, coals, wood, and produced biomass. Further, the ADboost's hyperparameters, such as learning rate, maximum number of splits, and minimum leaf size are adjusted using teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO), resulting in TADboost. The performance of TADboost is compared against various popular ML (NN, BAG, NB, and SVM) models. Simulated result reveals that the suggested classifiers outperform other compared ML classifiers for fuel classification with the classification accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and kappa as 0.9659, 0.9671, 0.9449, 0.9558, and 0.9482, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, the objective for a group of unmanned aerial vehicle agents (UAVs) to achieve three dimensional circumnavigation around a moving target which information is made available to all agents in the group. The cooperative circumnavigation is to drive the UAVs to orbit around the target according to a given elliptical desired spatial formation. Due to the thrust limitation needed to fly the drone, existing cyclic pursuit algorithms cannot be extended directly to achieve this objective. Thus the proposed algorithm is worked out to take into account this constraint in order to achieve such objective. The drones are subject to unknown external disturbance, also the masses of those agent drones are assumed to be unknown. Furthermore, the communication cost can be decreased and the Zeno behavior is shown to be excluded. The proposed controller guarantees the bounded control effort irrespective of the external disturbance and model uncertainties of the drone. Numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the efficacy of the approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Smart Healthy Schools: An IoT-enabled concept for multi-room dynamic air quality control

Smart Healthy Schools (SHS) are a new paradigm in building engineering and infection risk control in school buildings where the disciplines of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), IoT (Internet of Things) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) merge together. In the post-pandemic era, equipping schools with a network of smart IoT sensors has become critical to aspire for the optimal control of the IAQ and lowering the airborne infection risk of several pathogens, indirectly related to cumulated human emitted CO2 levels over time. Thermal energy waste in winter due to improved air renewal remains of major concern but can be well monitored within a SHS monitoring architecture thanks to the flexibility of the LoRaWAN protocol able to process also a large amount of energy and climatic data at room and building scale. In this work, we report the design of the AulaSicura platform, an IoT control system co-designed by the main author and Gizero Energie to implement the SHS paradigm via clearly visible (and audible) alarm signalling in existing and new school buildings. The cloud-based LoRa system is capable of continuous and simultaneous monitoring of a variety of sensors and IAQ parameters including indoor/oudoor temperatures, rel. humidities and human-emitted excess CO2. The multi-room monitoring concept of indoor-CO2 levels allows centralized control of natural ventilation levels in individual classrooms and can handle (quasi)-real-time data, relevant for data post-processing and future developments in (quasi)-real-rime assessment of IAQ and infection risk levels at single room scale. The sensor network is also extensible to up to one thousand of classrooms per LoRa-node allowing centralized control of entire school districts at an urban scale. Moreover, through Modbus-LoRa I/O converters, AulaSicura can also control the same amount of mechanical ventilation units per node either in pure or hybrid mechanical ventilation modes. © 2023 The Authors

Reinforcement learning yields a feedback controller that achieves specific control goal (which is often translated as a reward function). However, it often suffers from the Sim2Real gap, and domain randomization is known to be a method to overcome this issue. In this paper, we demonstrate necessity of input/outpu history when domain randomization is employed by a formal example and a simulation result. Land use and land cover (LULC) classification is essential for understanding the impact of both human activities and natural processes on the Earth’s surface. This classification plays a critical role in deforestation, urban planning, and damage assessment. However, traditional machine learning techniques often face challenges in achieving consistent accuracy in diverse datasets. In this study, we implement transfer learning and Bayesian learning approaches to enhance the accuracy and robustness of LULC classification. Transfer learning leverages knowledge from previous classification problems, while Bayesian learning addresses uncertainties in the classification process. Using the Remote Sensing Image Classification Benchmark (RSI-CB128) dataset, the study evaluates the performance of Bayesian Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Mobile Neural Networks (MobileNet), Inception Neural Networks (InceptionNet), Densely Connected Convolutional Networks (DenseNet) and Efficient Neural Networks (EfficientNet). The study also investigates the impact of varying the Bayesian layers on model performance, finding that a medium number of layers optimally captures model uncertainty. The results indicate that the transfer learning models, particularly MobileNet, achieved the highest accuracy of 97. 48% compared to 90. 33% for Bayesian CNN. These findings suggest that transfer learning techniques are highly effective for LULC classification, providing a reliable method for practical applications in remote sensing.

Drug-Drug Interactions (DDI) and Chemical-Protein Interactions (CPI) detection are crucial for patient safety, as unidentified interactions may lead to severe Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). While extensive DDI and CPI information exists within biomedical literature, manual extraction by experts proves time-intensive and resource-demanding. This study presents SB-AGT: Stochastic Beam Search-enhanced Attention-based Gumbel Tree an innovative approach to automated DDI and CPI extraction through an attention-based architecture incorporating a modified Gumbel-Tree method with stochastic beam search optimization. SB-AGT leverages multi-head attention mechanisms and enhanced latent tree structures to effectively capture complex syntactic features and drug relationship patterns. Also, the methodology includes comprehensive preprocessing protocols and addresses dataset imbalance through hybrid sampling techniques. Experimental validation on the DDIExtraction 2013 and CHEMPROT datasets demonstrates the model's effectiveness, achieving precision, surpassing traditional approaches and showing competitive performance compared to contemporary pre-trained models. Through parametric analysis, we establish optimal beam search configurations that maximize the model's extraction accuracy. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
