In recent years, distributed acoustic sensing has garnered significant interest in seismic monitoring due to its sensitivity to low frequencies, continuity of measurement in both time and space and the capacity to provide vast amounts of data regarding the conditions of large structures. This study aims to develop a metrological characterization system to evaluate the performance of the distributed acoustic sensing systems to reconstruct the mechanical wavefront and measure its propagation speed in polyurethane foams. The wave propagation speed measured using distributed acoustic sensing is compared with optical fiber Bragg grating sensors and piezoelectric accelerometer, and the difference is less than 1.5%. The results demonstrate that it is possible to reconstruct the mechanical wavefront using both instrumented sensors, thus validating the application of a distributed acoustic sensing system for mechanical wave measurement in polyurethane foams.

According to World Health Organization, it is assessed that around 1.3 billion individuals live with some distance or near vision impairment. People with visual impairment encounter different issues in their everyday life as advanced assistive devices are frequently not meeting the consumer prerequisites in terms of price and level of assistance. The paper’s primary goal is to build a smart electronic assistive device specifically for visually impaired individuals. The study consists of two devices, which are the glasses and the smart cane. The glasses are responsible for text detection and recognition, which falls under image processing. At the same time, the smart cane is the one responsible for obstacle detection using combination sensors known as VL53L0X and Ultrasonic. This study found that the smart cane and smart glass functions well as intended, in alerting users through a voice alert about the obstacles around and navigation and reading the text captured by the camera. The smart cane’s obstacle detection accuracy is 100%, while the smart glasses’ overall accuracy is 98.13% for document text and 91.33% for natural scene text.

Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) is very important to achieve the best operation and ensure the safe and continuous operation of wind energy conversion (WEC) systems. Over the last decade, artificial neural networks surpass classical machine learning models in a variety of FDD tasks. On the other hand, ensemble learning (EL) techniques have gained significant attention from the scientific community. EL is a technique that creates and combines multiple machine learning models in order to produce one optimal predictive model which gives improved results. The goal of this paper is to develop and validate effective neural networks based ensemble approach. First, an ensemble classifier based on neural networks techniques and using bagging, boosting, and random subspace combination techniques is proposed. Second, an improved extension of the proposed neural networks-based ensemble technique is presented. The main idea behind this proposal is to determine variable relationships via a data-reduction framework using Hierarchical K-means (H-K-means) clustering method in order to overcome the problem of computation time and storage cost. Finally, the results obtained from the proposed neural networks-based ensemble techniques are compared with other ensemble and single machine learning methods to illustrate and validate the advantages of the proposed techniques. © 2022, The Authors. In the Philippines, solid waste management is still a significant problem. Improper waste disposal causes serious health problems and environmental risks such as contamination of the water systems, floods, ground and air pollution, and diseases. Unfortunately, most people mistakenly believe that not segregating waste is acceptable. This study aims to develop and design a Smart Waste Bin Segregation using Image Processing and assist waste segregation through waste identification and segregation built on machine learning capable of navigating the one-time path set by the user. In particular, create an intelligent waste bin segregation prototype using image processing with three classifications. These classifications are the biodegradable, non-bio-degradable, and unknown intended to segregate solid waste into its respective bins and conduct accuracy tests using appropriate statistical tools. This device is designed for school use and may also be used in other establishments if more waste is trained, alleviate the waste segregation problem and help build an eco-friendlier society without compromising health and hygiene. The proponents successfully materialized the device, and function tests yielded an overall result of 97.33% accuracy.

Wireless communication has connected millions of people across the world to internet to enable them to reap benefits of digital economy in present scenario. Almost all the sectors of economy including healthcare, agriculture and transportation nowadays rely largely upon wireless communications. In the present context, the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 has caused governments to impose restrictions on various activities and employees have been directed to work from their homes to ensure safety. In such a situation, wireless communication has made it possible to connect with each other via the internet. Apart from this, Smart healthcare-system has been developed through utilisation of wireless communication systems. During this pandemic situation, delivery of healthcare services in remote areas has gained huge momentum and wireless communication plays a vital role in this regard. Aim of current critical assessment is to provide an in-depth analysis of the role played by wireless communication in establishment of a well-structured digital economy in present scenario. In literature-review, different applications of wireless technology via ICT in various sectors and aspects of life have been discussed through a conceptual and a theoretical framework. The Method section of current study has provided an in-depth insight into the ways required information have been collected in this study. As found in the results and discussion section, a positive relation exists between wireless-communication and establishment of digital economy in current situation. This study has concluded that there are certain challenges associated with wireless communication;however, it has significant influence in making processes smarter and faster as compared to earlier. © 2022 IEEE.

Noncured graphene thermal interface materials: Minimizing the thermal contact resistance

We report on experimental investigation of thermal contact resistance, Rc, of the noncuring graphene thermal interface materials with the surfaces characterized by different degree of roughness, Rc. It is found that the thermal contact resistance depends on the graphene loading, N, non-monotonically, achieving its minimum at the loading fraction of N 15 Rc.%. Increasing the surface roughness by Sq~1 μm results in approximately the factor of ×2 increase in the thermal contact resistance for this graphene loading. The obtained dependences of the thermal conductivity, KTIM, thermal contact resistance, Rc, and the total thermal resistance of the thermal interface material layer on and Rc indicate the need for optimization of the loading fraction of graphene for specific materials and roughness of the connecting surfaces. Our results are important for the thermal management of high-power-density electronics. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Ph.D. engineering student and high school chemistry teacher collaborated to teach the concept of Quantum-dots (Q-dots) and their applications through three main stages: introduction to the topic, hands-on activity, and topic expansion. Students were engaged through a 5-minute introduction on nanoscales and nanoparticles. Students then made particles using a dye-gelatin mixture to explore fluorescence effect in macroscopic dots, a similar optical phenomenon in Q-dots at nanoscales. Instructors explained the concept of fluorescence as a quantum kinetic in nanoparticles, which expanded the lesson through the theoretical discussion of Q-dots and the applications of fluorescent Q-dots in contrast-enhanced biomedical imaging systems. © American Society for engineering Education 2020.

In recent years, the GAA NS Si MOSFET has been explored as a leading technology. However, the intrinsic parameters of GAA NS Si MOSFETs are affected to varying degrees by various fluctuation sources, Statistically independent and identically distributed $(iid)$ assumptions on the aforementioned random variables overestimate the variability of high-frequency characteristics, compared with considering all fluctuation factors simultaneously. Notably, the random nanosized metal grains dominates the variations of voltage gain, cut-off frequency, and 3dB frequency because the random work functions strongly alter the channel surface potential.

Chiral nematic or cholesteric liquid crystals (LCs) are fluid mesophases with long-ranged orientational order featuring a quasilayered periodicity imparted by a helical director configuration but lacking long-range positional order. Doping molecular cholesteric LCs with strongly anisotropic uniaxial colloidal particles adds another level of complexity because of the interplay between weak surface-anchoring boundary conditions and bulk-based elastic distortions near the particle-LC interface. Using cylindrical colloidal disks and rods with different geometric shapes and surface conditions, we demonstrate that these colloidal inclusions generically exhibit biaxial orientational probability distributions which may impart anomalously strong local biaxiality onto the hybrid cholesteric LC structure. Unlike nonchiral hybrid molecular-colloidal LCs, where biaxial order emerges only at critical colloid volume fractions exceeding some uniaxial-biaxial transition value, the orientational probability of the colloidal inclusions immersed in chiral nematic hosts is unambiguously biaxial even at infinite dilution. We demonstrate that the colloids induce local biaxial perturbations within the molecular orientational order of the LC host medium which strongly enhances the weak but native biaxial order of chiral nematic LC induced by the chiral symmetry breaking of the director field. With the help of analytical modeling and computer simulations based on the Landau–de Gennes free energy of the host LC around the colloids, we rationalize the observed multilevel biaxial order and conclude that it is not only unavoidable but also strongly enhanced compared to both achiral hybrid LCs and purely molecular cholesteric LCs.
