This work presents the design of a tri-bandpass filter based on the side-coupled square ring structure. The modeling is conceived from the classic approach of coupled transmission lines. The geometry consists of a square structure of electrical length equal to twice the wavelength of the main operating frequency, and the laterally coupled lines through which the power supply occurs. Expressions for the admittance and transformation matrix were obtained based on the impedances and admittances that model the geometry. Analyzis were performed from EM simulations. A prototype was built to validate the modeling and adjusted for operation at 0.78, 1.5 and 2.30 GHz. All results are discussed and commented, and the comparisons between simulated and measured results are coherent and in agreement, thus proving the effectiveness of the applied method. © 2020 SBMO/SBMag.

Combining Experimental and Observational Data for Identification and Estimation of Long-Term Causal Effects

We consider the task of identifying and estimating the causal effect of a treatment variable on a long-term outcome variable using data from an observational domain and an experimental domain. The observational domain is subject to unobserved confounding. Furthermore, subjects in the experiment are only followed for a short period of time;hence, long-term effects of treatment are unobserved but short-term effects will be observed. Therefore, data from neither domain alone suffices for causal inference about the effect of the treatment on the long-term outcome, and must be pooled in a principled way, instead. Athey et al. (2020) proposed a method for systematically combining such data for identifying the downstream causal effect in view. Their approach is based on the assumptions of internal and external validity of the experimental data, and an extra novel assumption called latent unconfoundedness. In this paper, we first review their proposed approach, and then we propose three alternative approaches for data fusion for the purpose of identifying and estimating average treatment effect as well as the effect of treatment on the treated. Our first approach is based on assuming equi-confounding bias for the short-term and long-term outcomes. Our second approach is based on a relaxed version of the equi-confounding bias assumption, where we assume the existence of an observed confounder such that the short-term and long-term potential outcome variables have the same partial additive association with that confounder. Our third approach is based on the proximal causal inference framework, in which we assume the existence of an extra variable in the system which is a proxy of the latent confounder of the treatment-outcome relation. We propose influence function-based estimation strategies for each of our data fusion frameworks and study the robustness properties of the proposed estimators. © 2022, CC BY.

The localized release of energy at the surface of plasma-exposed materials plays a crucial role in many plasma-driven processes. Unfortunately, the interaction between low-temperature plasmas and surfaces is both poorly understood and difficult to characterize. Here, we use Raman thermometry to measure the temperature of graphene during plasma exposure. We observe a significant increase in the graphene temperature even for modest input plasma powers. These results suggest that two-dimensional materials are effective surface probes for the quantitative characterization of plasma-induced heating effects and for further investigation of the plasma-surface interaction.

Detecting illegal drugs in packages without opening the package is a challenge. X-ray diffraction tomography offers the potential capability of uniquely identifying illegal drugs within a package based on their atomic structure. To understand the potential for XRD-based drug detection, we developed a method for building a library of X-ray diffraction drug signatures. In addition, we used a compact, multi-modality fan beam X-ray imaging system (combining transmission and X-ray diffraction) to distinguish oxycodone from non-prescription medicine when concealed within different types of containment. © 2021 SPIE.

This comprehensive review article delves into the evolving landscape of solid-state batteries (SSBs), presenting a critical evaluation beyond the conventional lithium-ion technology. It meticulously explores the performance analysis, fast-charging capabilities, and in-operando characterization of SSBs. Amid growing demands for safer, higher energy density, and more sustainable energy storage solutions, SSBs emerge as a compelling alternative, promising to revolutionize applications from portable electronics to electric vehicles. This review begins with a detailed examination of the fundamental principles underpinning SSBs, including their unique architecture and the roles of solid electrolytes in enhancing safety and energy density. It then shifts focus to the pivotal aspect of fast charging – a critical parameter for consumer acceptance and market penetration of electric vehicles. In the era of the global village, frequent cross-border trade in goods has made container transportation a significant part in delivery of cargo. However, rollover accidents of container trucks often occur because of tall truck height, improper cargo stowage or crooked roads. Therefore, how to find the optimal center of gravity (CG) of the packed cargo remains an issue that the transportation industry should not neglect. To optimize cargo stability and reduce the incidence of rollovers, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm that scores the cargo stacking process to find the best CG of the cargo based on the CG of the vehicle. According to the deviation angle and the point closest to the best CG, we can Figure out the optimal cargo stacking method.

OPRLM: A Web Tool and a Database for Positioning and Simulations of Proteins in Realistic Lipid Membranes

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in explicit lipid bilayers enable modeling of protein-lipid interactions essential for membrane protein functions and regulation. The newly developed computational web tool, OPRLM (Orientations of Proteins in Realistic Lipid Membranes), automates the assembly of membrane protein structures with explicit lipids corresponding to 18 biological membrane types with symmetric or asymmetric lipid distributions, as well as 5 types of two-component lipid bilayers with varying cholesterol content. Built upon the CHARMM-GUI toolset and the PPM method, OPRLM simplifies the setup of complex simulation system involving integral and/or peripheral membrane proteins with explicit lipid mixtures and generates all necessary files for subsequent all-atom MD simulations. OPRLM has successfully generated protein-membrane systems for 286 tested protein structures in various biomembranes, including 138 structures containing ligands. The OPRLM database, an advanced successor of the OPM database, includes explicit protein-lipid systems for tested proteins in their native biomembranes. It provides coordinates of integral and peripheral membrane proteins from the Protein Data Bank embedded in planar or curved implicit lipid bilayers. Additionally, it includes the classification of proteins into types, superfamilies, and families, along with the information on intracellular localizations and membrane topology and visualization options. Ripe “Citrus maxima,” also known as pomelo, is mostly the same based on their appearance and skin color. For this instance, the classification of pomelo sweetness is quite tricky. According to a study, ripe fruit produces ethylene (C2H4) gas associated with fruit ripening level. The odor comes from molecules in the air that stimulate receptors in the nose. The senses of smell and taste are directly related because they use the same type of receptors. Since the senses of smell and taste are related to each other, the researcher used the pomelo's smell or gas for the classification of sweetness. In this case, the researchers create an automated system that will classify the pomelo sweetness in a non-invasive procedure through E-nose. The study's objective is to help pomelo industries in classifying the sweetness of their product before selling it to the consumers. Also, it aims to develop a device to help satisfy the purchase of consumers of sweet pomelo. Since ethylene sensor is quite expensive, MQ3, MQ6, and MQ8 gas sensors are used to detect the gas emission produced by pomelo. The three MQ sensors are connected to the Arduino Uno microcontroller to analog reading in parts per million (ppm). For data gathering, data mining is used for data clustering and classification. The accuracy of the system is verified in an invasive procedure, specifically testing its “total sugar content.” The pomelos were first subjected to data gathering in the manufactured device. These pomelos were then extracted for their pure natural juice and sent to a laboratory testing to get its total sugar content percentage. Laboratory results of pomelo juices in total sugar percentage have been analyzed to verify the effectiveness of the non-invasive procedure in classifying the sweetness of citrus maxima. The laboratory and non-invasive results verified that the total sugar content could be identified correctly by the e-nose. Thus, MQ3, MQ6, and MQ8 gas sensors are capable of detecting pomelo

Liquid crystals have proven to provide a versatile experimental and theoretical platform for studying topological objects such as vortices, skyrmions, and hopfions. In parallel, in hard condensed matter physics, the concept of topological phases and topological order has been introduced in the context of spin liquids to investigate emergent phenomena like quantum Hall effects and high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we bridge these two seemingly disparate perspectives on topology in physics. Combining experiments and simulations, we show how topological defects in liquid crystals can be used as versatile building blocks to create complex, highly degenerate topological phases, which we refer to as ‘Combinatorial Vortex Lattices’ (CVLs). CVLs exhibit extensive residual entropy and support locally stable quasi-particle excitations in the form of charge-conserving topological monopoles, which can act as mobile information carriers and be linked via Dirac strings. CLVs can be rewritten and reconfigured on demand, endowed with various symmetries, and modified through laser-induced topological surgery — an essential capability for information storage and retrieval. We demonstrate experimentally the realization, stability, and precise optical manipulation of CVLs, thus opening new avenues for understanding and technologically exploiting higher-hierarchy topology in liquid crystals and other ordered media. The use of the MathML language made possible to improve the accessibility of mathematics for blind or low-vision persons in digital media. Synthetic speech technologies have advanced significantly using MathML, however, the speech synthesizers' standard reading style is still not suitable for mathematics. Making mathematical reading of the speech synthesizers more natural and expressive is still a challenge. The creation of models to produce the appropriate prosody in the synthesized speech of math content is therefore necessary, as shown in previous research. This article presents a proposal for a model to improve prosody in the synthesized speech of mathematical expressions based on MathML. A corpus of mathematical expressions spoken by Mathematics teachers was created to support the model's development. The Fujisaki intonation model was adopted for intonation control, accent and phrase commands have been extracted from the corpus, and some adjustments have been made to manipulate prosodic parameters in the speech of mathematical expression in correlation with the MathML tree; additionally, a pattern of pauses control is being created.
