At Michigan Technological University, a phenomenological approach has been used to teach engineering ethics in a one-credit semester long course taken primarily by 3rdand 4thyear students for the past three years. In this course students examine what it is to be an ethical engineer through a series of readings about ethical engineers, personal interviews with engineers, and their personal reflection about their own character and values. From these experiences, students begin to encounter the "essence" of an ethical engineer. They were asked to experience, as much as possible in a classroom setting, the phenomenon of being an ethical engineer. Preand post-test results of the Defining Issues Test-2 (DIT-2, a validated and nationally used test of ethical reasoning developed by the Office for the Study of Ethical Development at the University of Alabama) indicate that students in this course improved their ethical reasoning by 23% (N2 scale) and by 18.8% (P scale). engineering Ethics is a topic that is covered in the common First-Year engineering courses at Michigan Tech. In the past, this topic has been approached through the analyses of case studies using prescribed strategies to solve an ethical dilemma. A new ethics module has been developed that uses a modification of the phenomenological approach described above. A pilot test will be used to compare our current ethics analysis method and the phenomenological approach. Both approaches will be evaluated using pre- and post-tests of the DIT-2. If the pilot course results are confirmed, a phenomenological approach to teaching engineering ethics may become standard, not only for first-year engineering students taking engineering fundamentals at Michigan Tech, but for students at all levels in all engineering fields. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

Based on the Kipp fragmentation model, an analysis has been developed to describe the relationship of diameter of fragments and impact toughness, impact velocity as well as projectile-target acoustic impedance when tungsten heavy alloy fragile material penetrating the metal plates. The dynamic penetration experiment for tungsten alloy fragile material with different component against the target is carried out. The size and the distribution of the fragments after penetration are obtained. Theoretical predictions show good agreement with the experimental results on the condition of low impact toughness. Analysis model and experimental results offer a theoretical reference for the engineering design of tungsten heavy alloy fragile projectile.

In efforts to promote interest in engineering careers among secondary students, across the country there are several current initiatives intended to introduce engineering concepts at precollege levels. There are basically three approaches in use: teach the concepts in a course dedicated to engineering, blend them into traditional courses such as math and science, or expose students to engineering in a project work environment. For concepts such as engineering design and project management, the project-based approach may be best. High School Enterprise (HSE) offers a project-based learning environment well suited to the introduction of these concepts. HSE is an extra- or in-curricular school activity where students from grades 9-12 engage in authentic, inquiry-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning. Students participate on teams organized as virtual companies that develop products or services. Each year, there is a capstone event where secondary student teams gather on a university campus to present their project work alongside college teams to an audience of university faculty and students and industry representatives. The overarching goal of HSE is to seed and cultivate what will become a world-class and broadly inclusive science and technology workforce. Due to the long-term nature of the projects, there are many opportunities to introduce, and then spend significant time on, the engineering design process. To introduce engineering design concepts into this program, the topic was presented to teachers during a week-long workshop in the summers of 2008 and 2009. In 2008, the presentation was of a general nature and intended as a very basic introduction, while in 2009, a more extensive unit was presented encompassing both design and project management. We research the multimedia information hiding (MIH) which is a technology to overlay digital information on multimedia contents such as picture, sound, document, etc. As application to disaster management of MIH, we have developed a new technology called "PAIH" (Public Address Information Hiding) which is a technology to overlay information such as position or destination on siren sound of urgent vehicles. Siren sound is allowed to degrade of sound quality, but PAIH is required to decode correct information from siren sound with pitch shift (Doppler effect) or under noisy environment.

As engineering educators have struggled with how to increase retention, interest nontraditional students into the profession, and incorporate an expanding knowledge base into the curriculum, the systematic study of how students learn technical material has become increasingly important. It has become accepted that students have different learning styles and that alternate teaching styles and methods can assist the learning process. Many of the innovations in approach to engineering education and the decrease in emphasis on lecturing as the primary method of material delivery have resulted from knowledge and appreciation of student learning style. Of the many diagnostic tools available to measure learning style, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator1 (MBTI) is probably the most commonly used. In 2002, the authors published a MBTI distribution study for University of Tennessee engineering graduates 2. These students were educated in a traditional curriculum. This study provided us with insights about which personality types were ultimately successful in traditional engineering programs. There is now a sufficient number of our graduates that have been exposed to the significantly reformed Engage integrated first year curriculum3, fully implemented in 1999, that a meaningful comparison study can be performed. In this study, a comparison of graduation success and MBTI distribution is made between the approximately 1500 students who began engineering study just before the implementation of our new first year curriculum, and the first 1500 students who entered the new curriculum. The most significant effect of this curriculum change was a 6% increase in graduation rate for entering students. The on-time completion of first year requirements for engineering students increased 15% when this curriculum was introduced, this early advantage tapering down to 6% as students progressed through the remainder of the curriculum. Since the fall of 2000, Michigan Technological University's undergraduate Enterprise program (***) of cross-disciplinary problem solving and product generation has created active learning environments for undergraduate students across campus. Teams of students from a variety of disciplines are given an opportunity to work in a business-like setting to solve real-world engineering problems supplied by industry. Through participation in the program, Enterprise students are able to develop technical competence as well as an understanding of the practical application of skills and knowledge in areas such as communication, business, leadership, teamwork, global competition, and entrepreneurship. Michigan Tech strongly believes that in order to increase the number of students who select to enroll in technical programs, students must be introduced to engineering and science while they are in elementary and secondary school. The hands-on educational model of the Enterprise program has been very successful in generating an excitement about engineering and science at the undergraduate level, so expanding this model to the K-12 system would seem to be a natural progression. Michigan Tech is in the process of working with high school teachers in local school districts to create an Enterprise-like model that builds upon the success of the undergraduate program, yet is tailored for the secondary learning environment. A joint team of MTU and high school faculty and administrators have been working together to develop a precollege-enterprise experience designed to introduce and involve students in engineering and technology. Project based, contextual learning experiences will be the foundation of the program, and are intended to increase the technological awareness of the future workforce. Our goal is to develop and implement a model at the regional level that can be readily transferred to the state and national levels. This paper will summarize the process used

We discuss a new method of time series data mining using moving approximation (MAP) transform and association measures based on MAP. MAP transform replaces time series values by slope values of lines approximating time series data in sliding window. An effective method of MAP transform calculation for time series with fixed time step is proposed. Based on MAP, a measure of local trend associations between time series is introduced. This measure is invariant under independent linear transformations of time series. Measure of local trend associations defines association function depending on the size of sliding window for each pare of considered time series. Based on association function, different association measures may be considered to measure local trend associations or global trend associations between time series. The methods of application of association measure to construction of association network of time series are discussed and illustrated on examples of synthetic and financial time series databases. Association networks give information about relationships between time dynamics of elements of systems given by time series databases.

It is the position of the authors that 'Analysis' and 'Design' should be taught as complementary skills rather than competing ones. Furthermore, the authors believe that the instructors of most (if not all) engineering courses should teach analysis and design skills and methodologies in a simultaneous and integrated manner. This paper outlines the efforts of the Engage program to integrate design and analysis in the freshman engineering curriculum at the University of Tennessee. Details of the curriculum structure and the process by which the integration of design and analysis is achieved are presented. Discussions of quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques and results as well as intended future initiatives are also presented.

This paper shares the experience of facilitating project design teams and offers practical suggestions and activities for improving workgroup performance. The activities presented here represent a series of mini-lectures and class exercises used to promote team development in a yearlong engineering project design course for first-year students. These short activities are useful in engaging college students and getting them to examine the effectiveness of their own teams. Attention is paid to group process, with different activities throughout the project design cycle, from icebreakers at team inception through reflection on strengths and areas for improvement at project completion. Included in this paper are semi-structured exercises for many various situations, including increasing communication, examining group norms, managing conflict, providing guidelines for creative brainstorming, monitoring team progress, and utilizing strengths of all team members. The information offered here is intended to give fresh ideas to those who work with teams so that they may more easily and confidently incorporate a focus on group process into project design courses. © 2004 IEEE.

Assessment of the automobile assembly paint process for energy, environmental, and economic improvement

A coat of paint adds considerable value to an automobile. In addition to consuming up to 60% of the energy needed by automobile assembly plants, however;the painting process also creates both economic and environmental impacts. This study investigated the degree of cost and environmental impact improvement that can be expected when modifications are considered for existing paint processes through heat integration. In order to accomplish this goal, a mathematical model was created to describe the energy use, costs, and environmental impacts from energy consumption in an automobile assembly painting facility. The model agrees with measured energy consumption data for process heating and electricity demand to within about 15% for one Michigan truck facility from which model input parameters were obtained. Thermal pinch analysis determined an energy conservation target of 58% of paint process energy demand. A heat exchanger network optimization study was conducted in order to determine how closely the network design could achieve this target The resulting heat exchanger network design was profitable based on a discounted cash flow analysis and may achieve reductions in total corporate energy consumption of up to 16% if implemented corporatewide at a major automobile manufacturer.
