EDSA-Ensemble: an Event Detection Sentiment Analysis Ensemble Architecture

As global digitization continues to grow, technology becomes more affordable and easier to use, and social media platforms thrive, becoming the new means of spreading information and news. Communities are built around sharing and discussing current events. Within these communities, users are enabled to share their opinions about each event. Using Sentiment Analysis to understand the polarity of each message belonging to an event, as well as the entire event, can help to better understand the general and individual feelings of significant trends and the dynamics on online social networks. In this context, we propose a new ensemble architecture, EDSAEnsemble (Event Detection Sentiment Analysis Ensemble), that uses Event Detection and Sentiment Analysis to improve the detection of the polarity for current events from Social Media. For Event Detection, we use techniques based on Information Diffusion taking into account both the time span and the topics. To detect the polarity of each event, we preprocess the text and employ several Machine and Deep Learning models to create an ensemble model. The preprocessing step includes several word representation models: raw frequency, TFIDF, Word2Vec, and Transformers. The accuracy of Inertial Navigation systems (INS) has significantly improved, making previously negligible sensor errors, such as gravitational disturbances, major sources of errors. This paper analyzes the impact of gravitational anomalies on various stages of position calculation in INS and their influence on accuracy. The study includes the examination of gravitational disturbances using spherical harmonic decomposition and Legendre series, employing models like EIGCN-6C4 and WGS-84. It also explores the impact of these disturbances on initial alignment, the overall INS navigation process, and methods for compensating gravitational disturbances. Finally, simulations are conducted to validate the proposed hypotheses. This comprehensive analysis aims to enhance the understanding of gravitational disturbances and improve the accuracy and reliability of INS through detailed simulations and practical solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

DeepLeaf: an optimized deep learning approach for automated recognition of grapevine leaf diseases

Plant diseases can cause severe losses in agricultural production, impacting food security and safety. Early detection of plant diseases is crucial to minimize crop damage and ensure agricultural sustainability. Manual monitoring is often impractical due to the complexity and time involved, making automated disease recognition essential. This study presents a new Plant Disease Detection Algorithm (PDDA) called DeepLeaf focused on identifying four common grapevine diseases: leaf blight, black rot, stable, and black measles. The PDDA integrates three key modules: an Image Preprocessing Module, a Feature Extraction Module, and an Optimized Convolutional Neural Network (OCNN)-based Classification Module. The OCNN forms the core of the classification system, with its hyperparameters fine-tuned using fuzzy optimization to enhance performance. Preprocessing techniques are applied to analyze diseased leaves, and a logistic regression algorithm is used to downsample the features for better analysis. The CNN is trained on images from the Plant Village dataset, allowing it to detect and classify grapevine leaf diseases accurately. The proposed model's efficiency in the automated diagnosis of grapevine diseases is demonstrated by its remarkable 99.7% accuracy rate. This high accuracy indicates that the PDDA may help with more effective and scalable plant disease monitoring, which will ultimately allow better agricultural practices. © The Author(s) 2025.

Longer training times pose a significant challenge in artificial neural networks (ANNs) as it may leads to increasing the computational costs and decreasing the effectiveness of the model. Therefore, it is imperative to reduce training times in ANNs to enhance the computational efficiency. The initialization of the weights between the layers in ANN plays a vital role in reducing training times. Appropriate weight initialization can help the network converge faster during the training by providing an optimum starting point for the network. Therefore, weight initialization techniques are essential for efficient training of ANNs. This paper revisits and implements different popular weight initialization techniques in ANNs and analyzes their impact on training time. Specifically, this paper implements Gaussian-based, Kaming-based, and Xavier-based weight initiation atop a popular DNN-based network. The experiments are conducted by employing a well-known dataset. The results show that the scenario when no weight initiation is applied consumed the highest training time, whereas different weight initiation techniques contribute in reducing the training times for the network. © 2024 The Authors.

The survival rate of lung cancer relies significantly on how far the disease has spread when it is detected, how it reacts to the treatment, the patient’s overall health, and other factors. Therefore, the earlier the lung cancer diagnosis, the higher the survival rate. For radiologists, recognizing malignant lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) scans is a challenging and time-consuming process. As a result, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been suggested to alleviate these burdens. Deep-learning approaches have demonstrated remarkable results in recent years, surpassing traditional methods in different fields. Researchers are currently experimenting with several deep-learning strategies to increase the effectiveness of CAD systems in lung cancer detection with CT. This work proposes a deep-learning framework for detecting and diagnosing lung cancer. The proposed framework used recent deep-learning techniques in all its layers. The autoencoder technique structure is tuned and used in the preprocessing stage to denoise and reconstruct the medical lung cancer dataset. Besides, it depends on the transfer learning pre-trained models to make multi-classification among different lung cancer cases such as benign, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The proposed model provides high performance while recognizing and differentiating between two types of datasets, including biopsy and CT scans. The Cancer Imaging Archive and Kaggle datasets are utilized to train and test the proposed model. The empirical results show that the proposed framework performs well according to various performance metrics. According to accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC metrics, it achieves 99.60, 99.61, 99.62, 99.70, and 99.75%, respectively. Also, it depicts 0.0028, 0.0026, and 0.0507 in mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root mean square error metrics. Pneumonia is one of the top causes of death in Romania and early detection of this disease improves the recovery chances and shortens the length of hospitalization. In this work, we develop a solution for automatic pneumonia detection based on convolutional neural networks. Four network models are investigated. They are trained on 4.163 images from a public dataset and tested on 530 images. The best results are obtained by one of the proposed models conducting to a sensitivity of 98.72%, an accuracy of 89.81%, and ROC 93.46%. Thus, this research proposes a lightweight screening tool that can help triaging the patients with pneumonia. © 2023 IEEE.

Machine Learning-Based Calibration Approaches for Single-Beam and Multiple-Beam Distance Sensors

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visual impairment poses significant challenges for approximately 17.5% of school-aged children, mainly due to refractive errors. These challenges extend to everyday navigation, environmental interaction, and overall life quality. Motivated by the desire to empower visually impaired individuals, who face navigational limitations, difficulties in object recognition, and inadequate assistance from traditional technologies, we propose SightAid. This innovative wearable vision system utilizes a deep learning-based framework, addressing the gaps left by current assistive solutions. Traditional methods, such as canes and GPS devices, often fail to meet the nuanced and dynamic needs of the visually impaired, especially in accurately identifying objects, understanding complex environments, and providing essential real-time feedback for independent navigation. SightAid comprises a seven-phase framework involving data collection, preprocessing, and training of a sophisticated deep neural network with multiple convolutional and fully connected layers. This system is integrated into smart glasses with augmented reality displays, enabling real-time object detection and recognition. Interaction with users is facilitated through audio or haptic feedback, informing them about the location and type of objects detected. A continuous learning mechanism, incorporating user feedback and new data, ensures the system's ongoing refinement and adaptability. For performance assessment, we utilized the MNIST dataset, and an Indoor Objects Detection dataset tailored for the visually impaired, featuring images of everyday objects crucial for safe indoor navigation. SightAid demonstrates remarkable performance with accuracy up to 0.9874, recall values between 0.98 and 0.99, F1-scores ranging from 0.98 to 0.99, and AUC-ROC values reaching as high as 0.9999. This paper considers the possibility of using an integrated distributed on-board intelligent decision support system development by a CAD-centric integrated pipeline approach. The problems and solutions of developing and integrating such pipeline into aviation complexes are explained. Developed demonstration for making onboard intelligent decision expert system step-by-step. Key features and use cases are listed for CAD pipeline. The need to split a single monolithic system across multiple CADs to meet various requirements is considered. CAD pipeline consists of: CAD "Expert", CAD "Message", CAD "Astra-DB"and CAD "Scenario".
