Crowd counting has important applications in public safety and pandemic control.A robust and practical crowd counting system has to be capable of continuously learning with the newly incoming domain data in real-world scenarios instead of fitting one domain ***-the-shelf methods have some drawbacks when handling multiple domains:(1)the models will achieve limited performance(even drop dramatically)among old domains after training images from new domains due to the discrepancies in intrinsic data distributions from various domains,which is called catastrophic forgetting;(2)the well-trained model in a specific domain achieves imperfect performance among other unseen domains because of domain shift;(3)it leads to linearly increasing storage overhead,either mixing all the data for training or simply training dozens of separate models for different domains when new ones are *** overcome these issues,we investigate a new crowd counting task in incremental domain training setting called lifelong crowd *** goal is to alleviate catastrophic forgetting and improve the generalization ability using a single model updated by the incremental ***,we propose a self-distillation learning framework as a benchmark(forget less,count better,or FLCB)for lifelong crowd counting,which helps the model leverage previous meaningful knowledge in a sustainable manner for better crowd counting to mitigate the forgetting when new data arrive.A new quantitative metric,normalized Backward Transfer(nBwT),is developed to evaluate the forgetting degree of the model in the lifelong learning *** experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed benchmark in achieving a low catastrophic forgetting degree and strong generalization ability.

Sleep benefits the restoration of energy metabolism and thereby suppo rts neuronal plasticity and cognitive ***6 is a NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase that has been recognized as an essential regulator of energy metabolism because it modulates various transcriptional regulators and metabolic *** aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Sirt6 on cerebral function after chronic sleep deprivation(CSD).We assigned C57BL/6J mice to control or two CSD groups and subjected them to AAV2/9-CMV-EGFP or AAV2/9-CMV-Sirt6-EGFP infection in the prelimbic cortex(PrL).We then assessed cerebral functional connectivity(FC) using resting-state functional MRI,neuron/astrocyte metabolism using a metabolic kinetics analysis;dendritic spine densities using sparse-labeling;and miniature excitato ry postsynaptic currents(mEPSCs) and action potential(AP) firing rates using whole-cell patchclamp *** addition,we evaluated cognition via a comprehensive set of behavioral *** with controls,Sirt6 was significantly decreased(P<0.05) in the PrL after CSD,accompanied by cognitive deficits and decreased FC between the PrL and accumbens nucleus,piriform cortex,motor co rtex,somatosensory co rtex,olfactory tubercle,insular cortex,and ***6 ove rexpression reve rsed CSD-induced cognitive impairment and reduced *** analysis of metabolic kinetics using [1-13C] glucose and [2-13C] acetate showed that CSD reduced neuronal Glu4and GABA2synthesis,which could be fully restored via forced Sirt6 ***,Sirt6 ove rexpression reversed CSD-induced decreases in AP firing rates as well as the frequency and amplitude of mEPSCs in PrL pyramidal *** data indicate that Sirt6 can improve cognitive impairment after CSD by regulating the PrL-associated FC network,neuronal glucose metabolism,and glutamatergic ***,Sirt6 activation may have potential as a novel strategy for treating sleep disorder-related diseases.

Sawtooth Waves (STW) that occur during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep are closely associated with memory consolidation and the regulation of brain functions. However, due to challenges in data acquisition and the high cost of manual annotation, there is currently an absence of a publicly massive STW annotated dataset. This study focuses on constructing a high-quality STW dataset, comprising 4912 samples from 200 participants, and developing classification algorithms for STW detection. We utilized three prevalent algorithms-Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-to assess the dataset's quality. The dataset achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 95.62% with the CNN, confirming the gold standard of STW dataset. Finally, we studied age and gender difference in physiological characteristics of STW, including average frequency of STW, peak-to-peak amplitude(PTP), root mean square(RMS) and spectrum power. This study created a public STW dataset and a STW detection model, laying the groundwork for analyzing the mechanisms of STW events.
