It was found that the non-perturbative corrections calculated using Pythia with the Perugia 2011 tune did not include the effect of the underlying event. The affected correction factors were recomputed using the Pythia 6.427 generator. These corrections are applied as baseline to the NLO pQCD calculations and thus the central values of the theoretical predictions have changed by a few percent with the new corrections. This has a minor impact on the agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions. Figures 2 and 6 to 13, and all the tables have been updated with the new values. A few sentences in the discussion in sections 5.2 and 9 were altered or removed.

Contour is an important cue for object recognition. In this paper, built upon the concept of torque in image space, we propose a new contour-related feature to detect and describe local contour information in images. There are two components for our proposed feature: One is a contour patch detector for detecting image patches with interesting information of object contour, which we call the Maximal/Minimal Torque Patch (MTP) detector. The other is a contour patch descriptor for characterizing a contour patch by sampling the torque values, which we call the Multi-scale Torque (MST) descriptor. Experiments for object recognition on the Caltech-101 dataset showed that the proposed contour feature outperforms other contour-related features and is on a par with many other types of features. When combing our descriptor with the complementary SIFT descriptor, impressive recognition results are observed.

A finite sequence drawn from a finite alphabet is disassembled into m-step ordered pairs with pair elements separated by m steps. Allowing multiple values for m=1, 2, , k leads to a multiplicity of ordered pairs that function as building blocks in the construction of multi-layered feature vectors to represent the sequence. Index positions of the leading elements in each ordered pair serve as scalar components of the feature vector for capturing spatial/temporal structures at the local level. Such representation provides a fertile mathematical space in data mining for discovering potentially interesting patterns in sequential data. Experiments on the classification problem involving two classes, Eukaryota and Euglenozoa returned encouraging results, with 96% overall accuracy in identifying the class for each bio-sequence in the two groups.

Social navigation provides drivers with an advice that aims to shift traffic flows in a network from a user equilibrium to a system optimum. The advice is based on minimizing a combination of the individual travel time and the marginal total travel time in the network. The level of altruism defines the extent to which a driver is willing to sacrifice his own travel time in favor of other drivers. Fuel consumption and CO2 emission are taking into account by converting them into time equivalent. Experimental results for a small network loosely representing the Bay area show that social navigation can reduce time delays by 10%. The reduction is positively correlated with network load, market penetration and level of altruism.

We consider the effective potential V in the standard model with a single Higgs doublet in the limit that the only mass scale μ present is radiatively generated. Using a technique that has been shown to determine V completely in terms of the renormalization group (RG) functions when using the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization scheme, we first sum leading-log (LL) contributions to V using the one loop RG functions, associated with five couplings (the top quark Yukawa coupling x, the quartic coupling of the Higgs field y, the SU(3) gauge coupling z, and the SU(2)×U(1) couplings r and s). We then employ the two loop RG functions with the three couplings x, y, z to sum the next-to-leading-log (NLL) contributions to V and then the three to five loop RG functions with one coupling y to sum all the N2LL…N4LL contributions to V. In order to compute these sums, it is necessary to convert those RG functions that have been originally computed explicitly in the minimal subtraction scheme to their form in the Coleman-Weinberg scheme. The Higgs mass can then be determined from the effective potential: the LL result is mH=219 GeV/c2 and decreases to mH=188 GeV/c2 at N2LL order and mH=163 GeV/c2 at N4LL order. No reasonable estimate of mH can be made at orders VNLL or VN3LL since the method employed gives either negative or imaginary values for the quartic scalar coupling. The fact that we get reasonable values for mH from the LL, N2LL, and N4LL approximations is taken to be an indication that this mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking is in fact viable, though one in which there is slow convergence towards the actual value of mH. The mass 163 GeV/c2 is argued to be an upper bound on mH.
