Edge detection is one of the most commonly used operations in image processing and pattern recognition, the reason for this is that edges form the outline of an object. An edge is the boundary between an object and the background, and indicates the boundary between overlapping objects. This means that if the edges in an image can be identified accurately, all of the objects can be located and basic properties such as area, perimeter, and shape can be measured. Since computer vision involves the identification and classification of objects in an image, edge detection is an essential tool. Efficient and accurate edge detection will lead to increase the performance of subsequent image processing techniques, including image segmentation, object-based image coding, and image retrieval. A color image edge detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. Average maximum color difference value is used to predict the optimum threshold value for a color image and thinning technique is applied to extract proper edges. The proposed method is applied over large database of color images both synthetic and real life images and performance of the algorithm is evident from the results and is comparable with other edge detection algorithms.

This paper presents a pioneering effort towards machine authentication of security documents like bank cheques, legal deeds, certificates, etc. that fall under the same class as far as security is concerned. The proposed method first computationally extracts the security features from the document images and then the notion of dasiagenuinepsila vs. dasiaduplicatepsila is defined in the feature space. Bank cheques are taken as a reference for conducting the present experiment. Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and neural networks (NN) are involved to verify authenticity of these cheques. Results on a test dataset of 200 samples show that the proposed approach achieves about 98% accuracy for discriminating duplicate cheques from genuine ones. This strongly attests the viability of involving machine in authenticating security documents.

Under three-language formula, the destination address block of postal document of an Indian state is generally written in three languages: English, Hindi and the State official language. Because of inter-mixing of these scripts in postal address writings, it is very difficult to identify the script by which a pin-code is written. Also, because of the writing style of different individuals some of the digits in a pin-code string may touch with its neighboring digits. Accurate segmentation of such touching components into individual digits is a difficult task. To avoid such difficulties, in this paper we proposed a tri-lingual (English, Hindi and Bangla) 6-digit full pin-code string recognition. We obtained 99.01% reliability from our proposed system when error and rejection rates are 0.83% and 15.27%, respectively.

This paper looks at the problem of searching for Indian language (IL) content on the Web. Even though the amount of IL content that is available on the Web is growing rapidly, searching through this content using the most popular websearch engines poses certain problems. Since the popular search engines do not use any stemming / orthographic normalization for Indian languages, recall levels for IL searches can be low. We provide some examples to indicate the extent of this problem, and suggest a simple and efficient solution to the problem. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Automatic separation of text and symbols from graphics in document image is one of the fundamental aims in graphics recognition. In maps, separation of text and symbols from graphics involves many challenges because the text and symbols frequently touch/overlap with graphical components. Sometimes the colors in a single character are gradually distributed which adds extra difficulty in text and symbol separation from color maps. In this paper we proposed a system to retrieve text and symbol from color map. Here, at first, we separate the map into different foreground layers according to color features and then in each layer, connected component features and skeleton information are used to identify text and symbol from graphics on the basis of their geometrical features. Lastly, segmentation results of the individual layers are combined to get final segmentation results. From the experiment we obtained encouraging results. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

An inference engine for classification of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals is developed with the help of a rule based rough set decision system. For this purpose an automated data extraction system from ECG strips is being developed by using a few image processing techniques. A knowledge base is developed after consulting different medical books as well as feedback of reputed cardiologists on interpretation and selection of essential time-plane features of ECG signal. An algorithm for extraction of different time domain features is also developed with the help of differentiation techniques and syntactic approaches. Finally, a rule-based rough set decision system is generated using these time-plane features for the development of an inference engine for disease classification. Two sets of rules are generated for this purpose. The first set is for general separation between normal and diseased subjects. The second set of rules is used for classifications between different diseases. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper, we present a scheme towards recognition of English character in multi-scale and multi-oriented environments. Graphical document such as map consists of text lines which appear in different orientation. Sometimes, characters in a single word may follow a curvi-linear way to annotate the graphical curve lines. For recognition of such multi-scale and multi-oriented characters a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based scheme is presented in this paper. The feature used here is invariant to character orientation. Circular ring and convex hull have been used along with angular information of the contour pixels of the character to make the feature rotation invariant. We tested our proposed scheme on two different datasets. Combining circular and convex hull feature we have obtained 96.73% and 99.56% accuracy in these two datasets. © 2008 IEEE.

Touching characters are major problem of achieving higher recognition rate in optical character recognition (OCR). Present OCR systems do not perform well when adjacent characters touch. If characters are touched in graphical documents (e.g. map) then such touching string recognition is more difficult because in such documents touching characters appear in multi-oriented direction. In this paper, we present a scheme towards the recognition of English two-character multi-oriented touching strings. When two or more characters touch, they generate a big cavity region at the background portion and we used this background information in our scheme. To handle the background information, convex hull is used. In this scheme, at first, a set of initial segmentation points is predicted based on the concave residues of the convex hull of the touching characters. Next, based on the initial points, we select some candidate segmentation lines. Finally the recognition confidence of two sub-images of a touching string, obtained from each candidate segmentation line is computed. The candidate segmentation line from which we get optimum confidence is the actual segmentation line and the corresponding characters in favour of which the two segmentation parts show optimum confidence is the recognition result of the touching string. To compute the recognition confidence, SVM classifier is used. The features used in the SVM are invariant to character orientation. Circular ring and convex hull ring based approach has been used along with angular information of the contour pixels of the character to make the feature rotation invariant. From the experiment we obtained encouraging result.

A hierarchical graph model was presented to explicitly represent the semantic decompositions of faces and the relations of those decomposed components, e.g. face, left-eye, right-eye, nose and mouth. For each component, a deformable template based on active basis was used as the descriptor, which would, in detection, be fitted in a given testing images to generate the proposal map, and the process could be computed in a parallel way. Then, for face detection, it was to test the relations among the detected components under the Bayesian framework. The proposed method is tested on the MIT+CMU face test set with performance improvements obtained compared with traditional methods, especially for handling different variations of occlusions, poses and illuminations of faces.

In the present work, a robust algorithm for automatic identification and segmentation of heart portion from cardiac Magnetic Resonance video Image (MRI) is presented. At first, an outline has been generated to get the region of interest (ROI) by employing the moving object criterion, which eventually reduces the processing time significantly. In the next step, Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm is used to segment the grey scale images into 5 distinct regions. This is done to make them more suitable for further processing and easy to use in the developed software. Finally Level set algorithm added with automatic contour generation module is used for tracking the exact heart boundary to segment it out from the rest of the image. This algorithm gives equally persistent result for both long axis and shot axis cardiac MRI data consisting of a movie (in AVI format) containing 32 separate frames of grayscale images.
