Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conclusion finally.

Eliminating Contextual Prior Bias for Semantic image Editing via Dual-Cycle Diffusion

The recent success of text-to-image generation diffusion models has also revolutionized semantic image editing, enabling the manipulation of images based on query/target texts. Despite these advancements, a significant challenge lies in the potential introduction of contextual prior bias in pre-trained models during image editing, e.g., making unexpected modifications to inappropriate regions. To address this issue, we present a novel approach called Dual-Cycle Diffusion, which generates an unbiased mask to guide image editing. The proposed model incorporates a Bias Elimination Cycle that consists of both a forward path and an inverted path, each featuring a Structural Consistency Cycle to ensure the preservation of image content during the editing process. The forward path utilizes the pre-trained model to produce the edited image, while the inverted path converts the result back to the source image. The unbiased mask is generated by comparing differences between the processed source image and the edited image to ensure that both conform to the same distribution. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, as it significantly improves the D-CLIP score from 0.272 to 0.283. A hybrid method is used to evaluate atherosclerosis through a mathematical morphology approach and GVF-Snake method. Common carotid artery (CCA) segmentation requires outlining the intima and adventitia contours on the transverse view of B-mode ultrasound (US) images. The lumen and adventitia contours are segmented using a morphology and GVF-Snake methods, respectively. Upon analyzing ten separate patient data sets demonstrate that a comparison between the proposed method and the traditional approach (manual contouring) on 110 transverse images of the CCA showed a mean absolute distance (MAD) of 0.67±0.17mm for lumen and 0.64 ± 0.19mm for adventitia. Their Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) values are 92.7%±2.3% and 90.3%±3.5% for lumen and adventitia segmentation, respectively. These values are in good agreement with clinical standards.

In this paper, we study the asymptotical properties of least squares regularized regression with indefinite kernels in reproducing kernel Kreın spaces (RKKS). The classical approximation analysis cannot be directly applied to study its asymptotical behavior under the framework of learning theory as this problem is in essence non-convex and outputs stationary points. By introducing a bounded hyper-sphere constraint to such non-convex regularized risk minimization problem, we theoretically demonstrate that this problem has a globally optimal solution with a closed form on the sphere, which makes our approximation analysis feasible in RKKS. Accordingly, we modify traditional error decomposition techniques, prove convergence results for the introduced hypothesis error based on matrix perturbation theory, and derive learning rates of such regularized regression problem in RKKS. Under some conditions, the derived learning rates in RKKS are the same as that in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS), which is actually the first work on approximation analysis of regularized learning algorithms in RKKS. In the medical diagnostic computed tomography (CT) systems, the x-ray tube usually emits photons with a polychromatic spectrum, resulting in beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. Although the bone correction method is extensively used to compensate for the beam hardening artifacts, its performance crucially depends on the empirical choice of a scaling factor. To overcome this shortcoming, here we propose two adaptive correction methods, which utilize the Helgasson-Ludwig (H-L) consistency condition to determine the optimal scaling factor and the corresponding coefficient vector. Our numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques.

Fast signal recovery from saturated measurements by linear loss and nonconvex penalties

Sign information is the key to overcoming the inevitable saturation error in compressive sensing systems, which causes information loss and results in bias. For sparse signal recovery from saturation, we propose to use a linear loss to improve the effectiveness from existing methods that utilize hard constraints/hinge loss for sign consistency. Due to the use of linear loss, an analytical solution in the update progress is obtained, and some nonconvex penalties are applicable, e.g., the minimax concave penalty, the 0 norm, and the sorted 1 norm. Theoretical analysis reveals that the estimation error can still be bounded. Generally, with linear loss and nonconvex penalties, the recovery performance is significantly improved, and the computational time is largely saved, which is verified by the numerical experiments. In order to solve the problem of image degradation caused by dust environments, an image degradation model considering multiple scattering factors caused by dust was first established using the first-order multiple scattering method. Then, a dark channel prior principle was applied to present an image restoration algorithm based on the image degradation model. Finally, GA optimization algorithm was applied to optimize the atmospheric light and the exposure parameters. This optimization algorithm was established according to the criterion of the image evaluation based on kirsch operator with automatic threshold. By using the method an optimistic result of image restoration was obtained. The experimental results have shown that the method not only enhanced luminance and contrast, but also discovered more detail edges information. The method provided a foundation for target recognition in the dust environments.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are essential for gene expression, and the complex RNA-protein interaction mechanisms require analysis of global RNA information. Therefore, accurate prediction of RBP binding sites on full-length RNA transcripts is crucial for understanding these mechanisms and their roles in diseases. While machine learning methods can predict RBP binding to RNA fragments, extending this to full-length transcripts presents challenges due to sequence length and data imbalance. In this paper, we introduce RBP-Former, a binding site joint prediction model designed specifically for full-length RNA transcripts that can be used for multiple RBPs. This model processes information at both coarse and fine-grained levels to fully exploit sequence data and its interactions with multiple RBPs. We develop multi-level imbalance learning strategies, achieving favorable results on imbalanced data. Our method outperforms existing methods in predicting binding sites on full-length RNA transcripts for multiple RBPs, demonstrating its effectiveness in handling imbalanced label and sample distributions.

An Active Landing Recovery Method for Quadrotor UAV: Localization, Tracking and Buffering Landing

This paper proposes a principle of fully autonomous ground mobile landing recovery of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for the problems of relatively fixed landing point, passive recovery, poor flexibility, and environmental adaptability, which mainly includes localization, landing point tracking, and buffering landing for quadrotor UAV. Firstly, aiming at the problem that it is difficult to accurately obtain the position of a UAV in dynamic mobile landing recovery, a target location method based on Asynchronous Multisensor Information Fusion(AMIF) and servo turntable focus tracking is proposed. Secondly, to achieve fast and high-precision tracking of UAVs, a tracking control strategy of an independently driven landing recovery system and a Stewart six-degree of freedom platform is proposed. Then, to solve the problems of large impact force and center of gravity instability in the landing process of UAV, a stationarity control algorithm based on model prediction and a compliance control algorithm based on adaptive variable impedance are designed to achieve active compliance control while adjusting the position and attitude of the receiving surface in real-time. Finally, a quadrotor unmanned landing and recovery experimental platform is built to verify the feasibility of the ground mobile landing and recovery strategy proposed in this paper and the effectiveness of the control algorithm.
