Social companion robots are intentionally developed and designed to support humans in useful tasks and to use social cues to establish a relationship to the user. However, so far no social companion robots existed outside of research labs to perform long-term studies "in the wild", exploring how this relationship actually evolves over time. In this paper we present the research agenda for such a study using the soon commercially available BUDDY robot from Blue Frog Robotics. We chose a sociological ethnographic approach with eight households, methodologically mainly focusing on qualitative data gathered through a series of household visits. For data analysis we aim at extending the Domestic Robot Ecology (DRE), which was originally developed based on ethnographic studies with vacuum cleaning robots, and for data interpretation we base our work on a newly proposed sociological framework, we call everyday-life centered approach (ELCA). © 2018 Association for computing Machinery.

While open data platforms are increasingly popular among end-users as well as data providers, there is a growing problem with inconsistent update frequencies and lack of quality in datasets. Efforts to monitor data quality are currently limited to checking meta-information and creating revisions to allow manual inspection of former datasets. We employ a visual Analytics framework for generating and visualizing data provenance from data quality to facilitate data analysis and help users to understand the impact of updates on the data. Data quality metrics are utilized to quantify the development of data quality over time for open data projects. We combine quality metrics, data provenance, and data transformation information in an interactive exploration environment to expedite assessment and selection of appropriate open datasets. © 2018 The Author(s)

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging and visualization is often used in medical diagnostics, especially in prenatal screening. Screening the development of the fetus is important to assess possible complications early on. State of the art approaches involve taking standardized measurements to compare them with standardized tables. The measurements are taken in a 2D slice view, where precise measurements can be difficult to acquire due to the fetal pose. Performing the analysis in a 3D view would enable the viewer to better discriminate between artefacts and representative information. Additionally making data comparable between different investigations and patients is a goal in medical imaging techniques and is often achieved by standardization. With this paper, we introduce a novel approach to provide a standardization method for 3D ultrasound fetus screenings. Our approach is called "The Vitruvian Baby" and incorporates a complete pipeline for standardized measuring in fetal 3D ultrasound. The input of the method is a 3D ultrasound screening of a fetus and the output is the fetus in a standardized T-pose. In this pose, taking measurements is easier and comparison of different fetuses is possible. In addition to the transformation of the 3D ultrasound data, we create an abstract representation of the fetus based on accurate measurements. We demonstrate the accuracy of our approach on simulated data where the ground truth is known. © 2019 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2019 The Eurographics Association.

Participatory Design means recognizing that those who will be affected by a future technology should have an active say in its creation. Yet, despite continuous interest in involving people as future users and consumers into designing novel and innovative future technology, participatory approaches in technology design remain relatively underdeveloped in the German HCI community. This article brings together the diversity of voices, domains, perspectives, approaches, and methods that collectively shape Participatory Design in Germany. In the following, we (1) outline our understanding of participatory practice and how it is different from mere user involvement;(2) reflect current issues of participatory and fair technology design within the German Participatory Design community;and (3) discuss tensions relevant to the field, that we expect to arise in the future, and which we derived from our 2021 workshop through a speculative method. We contribute an introduction and an overview of current themes and a speculative outlook on future issues of Participatory Design in Germany. It is meant to inform, provoke, inspire and, ultimately, invite participation within the wider Computer Science community. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

In order to avoid Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, diagnosis is necessary beforehand. Specialists would then begin preventive care as quickly as possible. They require fast and accurate evaluation at the earliest and most challenging stage to detect in the diagnosis of AD. The main objectives of this paper are to review previous studies into a better approach that automatically recognizes the occurrence of disease in unusually used pictures of sagittal magnetic resonance (MRI) images. The approach uses the MRI brain to identify and distinguish characteristics using a range of characteristics recognition techniques. This paper presented a summary of research papers on Alzheimer's Disease published in reputable journals from 2017 to 2020 and focused on exploring different strategies related to the latest tools used in early diagnosis, which may help researchers to understand current algorithms and techniques in this field and eventually develop new and more efficient algorithms. © 2020 IEEE.

Project overview. Teamwork can be defined as dynamic team interaction between two or more interdependent members to achieve a shared goal. Many studies have examined how coordination dynamics are associated with team effectiveness in the context of all-human teams (Gorman, Amazeen, & Cooke, 2010), and later, in human-autonomy teams (HAT)s (Demir, Likens, Cooke, Amazeen, & McNeese, 2018). HATs must have autonomous agents that act as effective teammates and help enable HATs to function as collaborative systems. Synergistic relationships among a system’s human and technological components provide the basis for emergent systems-level outcomes. Layered dynamics, a recent empirical modelling technique aimed at achieving this objective (Gorman et al., 2019), considers reorganization of the sociotechnical system across individual components and the overall system. The current study examined layered dynamics of HATs during automation and autonomy failures and addresses how members of HATs interact with each other and technological aspects of the system. Design and Method. We utilized a simulated Remotely Piloted Aircrtaft System (RPAS) Synthetic Task Environment with three heteregeneous and interdepedent roles: (1) a navigator, who created a dynamic flight plan and provided waypoint related information;(2) a pilot, who used this information to monitor and adjust settings. The pilot also communicated with the photographer to negotiate settings and enable proper conditions to obtain a good photograph;and (3) a photographer, who monitored and adjusted the camera to take good target photos, and provided feedback to the team. This study utilized a Wizard of Oz paradigm, in which the navigator and photographer were instructed that the pilot was a synthetic agent. However, the pilot was a highly-trained experimenter, in a separate room, who simulated an autonomous agent using limited vocabulary. Verbal communication is important for coordination and performance in many team settings. However, the inclusion of autonomous artificial agents presents challenges to teamwork. This study sought to examine the effects of three different training approaches on team communication behaviors in human-autonomy teams (HATs) under normal and degraded conditions. Teams were split into three conditions prior to execution of missions in a remotely piloted aircraft system task environment: coordination training, calibration training, and control training. Analysis of text communications indicated that teams that received coordination training push information more frequently compared to teams that received control or calibration training, though this effect appeared to diminish over time. Teams in all three conditions pulled information equally, with a reduction in frequency over time. It was also found that teams that received coordination training were more likely to overcome failures attributed to the autonomous agent's cognitive capacities. This research suggests that coordination training in HATs may be effective at influencing team verbal behaviors, however the extent of this effect requires further examination.

Attitudes toward the use of voice-assisted technologies among people with Parkinson disease: Findings from a web-based survey

Background: Speech problems are common in people living with Parkinson disease (PD), limiting communication and ultimately affecting their quality of life. Voice-assisted technology in health and care settings has shown some potential in small-scale studies to address such problems, with a retrospective analysis of user reviews reporting anecdotal communication effects and promising usability features when using this technology for people with a range of disabilities. However, there is a need for research to establish users' perspectives on the potential contribution of voice-assisted technology for people with PD. Objective: This study aims to explore the attitudes toward the use of voice-assisted technology for people with PD. Methods: A survey was approved for dissemination by a national charity, Parkinson's UK, to be completed on the web by people living with the condition. The survey elicited respondent demographics, PD features, voice difficulties, digital skill capability, smart technology use, voice-assisted technology ownership and use, confidentiality, and privacy concerns. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and summative content analysis of free-text responses. Results: Of 290 participants, 79.0% (n=229) indicated that they or others had noticed changes in their speech or voice because of the symptoms of their condition. Digital skills and awareness were reported on 11 digital skills such as the ability to find a website you have visited before. Most participants (n=209, 72.1%) reported being able to perform at least 10 of these 11 tasks. Similarly, of 70.7% (n=205) participants who owned a voice-assisted device, most of them (166/205, 80.9%) used it regularly, with 31.3% (52/166) reporting that they used the technology specifically to address the needs associated with their PD. Nonlinear spectral mapping-based models based on supervised learning have successfully applied for speech enhancement. However, as supervised learning approaches, a large amount of labelled data (noisy-clean speech pairs) should be provided to train those models. In addition, their performances for unseen noisy conditions are not guaranteed, which is a common weak point of supervised learning approaches. In this study, we proposed an unsupervised learning approach for speech enhancement, i.e., denoising autoencoder with linear regression decoder (DAELD) model for speech enhancement. The DAELD is trained with noisy speech as both input and target output in a self-supervised learning manner. In addition, with properly setting a shrinkage threshold for internal hidden representations, noise could be removed during the reconstruction from the hidden representations via the linear regression decoder. Speech enhancement experiments were carried out to test the proposed model. Results confirmed that the proposed DAELD could achieve comparable and sometimes even better enhancement performance as compared to the conventional supervised speech enhancement approaches, in both seen and unseen noise environments. Moreover, we observe that higher performances tend to achieve by DAELD when the training data cover more diverse noise types and signal-tonoise-ratio (SNR) levels.

Knowledge workers, such as scientists, journalists, or consultants, adaptively seek, gather, and consume information. These processes are often inefficient as existing user interfaces provide limited possibilities to combine information from various sources and different formats into a common knowledge representation. In this paper, we present the concept of an information collage (IC) - a web browser extension combining manual spatial organization of gathered information fragments and automatic text analysis for interactive content exploration and expressive visual summaries. We used IC for case studies with knowledge workers from different domains and longer-term field studies over a period of one month. We identified three different ways how users collect and structure information and provide design recommendations how to support these observed usage strategies. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
