Photonic crystal (PC) based biosensors have been attracted more attention due to their advantages, such as sensitivity, real time monitoring and low-cost realization. Especially, label-free PC bioassay is more attractive than labeling detection, because time-consuming and expensive labeling step for the targets can be eliminated. Point-of-care testing is possible without fluorescent equipments and quantitative and kinetic measurement of molecule interaction is allowable. We propose a specific and label-free immunoglobulin G antibody detection method using a nanoporous hydrogel PC by observing the color change. This proposed sensor has great potential for next generation of bioassay platform for diagnosis of pathogens. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to improved portability and patient acceptability, a recently-developed hand-held ultrasound machine has been tested in various emerging clinical applications, e.g., ambulatory healthcare. For miniaturization, in a hand-held ultrasound machine, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) have been widely used. However, since the clinical utility of a hand-held ultrasound machine is continuously evolving, it would be appropriate to have improved functional flexibility, especially in mid and back-end processing. In this paper, we present a software-based hand-held ultrasound system where a single digital signal processor (DSP) is utilized to support color Doppler imaging in real time. ©2009 IEEE.

In this paper, the adaptive clutter rejection (ACR) method, in which an optimum clutter filter is dynamically selected at each location based on clutter power and instantaneous velocities, is applied to effectively remove flash artifacts during the assessment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). To evaluate the ACR method, the in vivo data were acquired from an ultrasound machine by moving a 9-MHz linear array probe distally along the politeal vein of a volunteer. The ACR method was compared with the conventional static clutter rejection (CON) and down-mixing (DM) methods in terms of flow-signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) for 80 frames. The ACR method provides 8.5 dB and 11.4 dB improvements in SCR compared to the DM and CON methods, respectively. ©2009 IEEE.

Building on decades of work in characterizing the dozens of RNA modifications in the microbial epitranscriptome, recent advances in analytical technology and genetics have revealed systems-level functions for many tRNA modifications. The tRNA (uracil-5-)-methyltransferase TrmA and its product, 5-methyl uridine (m⁵U) at position 54 in the T-loop, however, has not been linked to a specific phenotype. Here, we defined the functional and biological roles of TrmA in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA14), a major multidrug-resistant pathogen. Surprisingly, though TrmA was found to site-specifically catalyze m⁵U54 on all PA14 tRNAs, loss of TrmA had no effect on the levels of any of 36 tRNA modifications except m⁵U and had minimal effects on multiple phenotypic parameters, including growth rate, morphology, motility, and biofilm formation. However, loss of TrmA conferred a striking polymyxin antibiotic resistance. mRNA and tRNA profiling and proteomics analyses revealed that TrmA regulates the expression of codon-biased gene families at the level of translation, including components of a type III secretion system (T3SS). Loss of TrmA upregulated T3SS, leading to increased macrophage IL-1β in bacterial challenge tests. Altogether, these results revealed novel biological functions of TrmA and its roles in modulating gene expression at multiple levels in P. aeruginosa. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Rosa multiflora fructus and its active compound ellagic acid improve depressive-like behaviors in mice via monoamine oxidase inhibition

Depression is a significant global health challenge, imposing severe social and economic burdens. Rosa multiflora fructus possesses a range of biological properties;however, its role in reducing stress hormone-induced depression remains unclear. This study examined the antidepressant effects of Rosa multiflora fructus extract (RMFE) on corticosterone (CORT)-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice and explored the underlying molecular mechanisms. ICR mice were administered CORT (40 mg/kg/day, i.p.) for 8 weeks to induce depressive-like behaviors. They were then treated with RMFE (100 or 300 mg/kg/day, p.o.) or selegiline (10 mg/kg/day, p.o.) as a positive control. RMFE treatment significantly alleviated depressive-like behaviors, as evaluated by the tail suspension and forced swimming tests. Furthermore, RMFE reduced hippocampal astrocyte hypertrophy and lowered the protein and mRNA expression of monoamine oxidase A and B (MAOA and MAOB). Phytochemical analysis using UPLC-MS/MS identified five flavonoids in RMFE, including ellagic acid (EA), hyperoside, isoquercetin, quercetin, and quercetin-3-glucuronide. In silico molecular docking revealed that these phenolic compounds interact with MAOA and MAOB, with EA exhibiting the strongest binding affinity. Consistently, EA administration effectively alleviated depressive-like behaviors and increased monoamine neurotransmitter levels in CORT-treated mice. These results suggest that RMFE exerts antidepressant effects by inhibiting MAO, restoring monoamine levels, and modulating hippocampal astrocytic hypertrophy, with EA identified as the primary bioactive compound driving its efficacy. © 2025

We have fabricated vertical type organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) using organic semiconductor materials such as F16CuPc, NTCDA, PTCDIC-8 and C60. The layers of OTFT were fabricated by vacuum evaporation technique a nd spin casting method o nto the Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass. I-V characteristics and on-off ratios of the fabricated OTFTs were investigated. In addition, we have fabricated light emitting transistor using MEH-PPV and then investigated EL electroluminescent properties.

Fabrication of periodically aligned vertical singlecrystalline anatase TiO2 nanotubes with perfect hexagonal open-ends using chemical capping materials

A vertically aligned anatase TiO2 （A-TiO2） nanotube array has been fabricated by coating a ZnO nanorod （NR） template with a TiO2 precursor solution. After coating, the ZnO NR cores were selectively etched in an acidic environment to form TiO2 nanotubes （NTs）. More specifically, after growing the ZnO NRs via a hydrothermal method, one drop of the TiO2 precursor solution was cast to coat the ZnO NRs, the tops of which were previously covered with chemical capping materials by electrostatic interaction, and then the sample was sintered. Finally, the sample was immersed in an acidic solution resulting in selective etching of the ZnO NR cores. Thus, only TiO2 NTs remained on the substrate. The capping material is effectively used to create a perfect, hexagonal open-ended TiO2 NT array, which interestingly extends onset absorption towards the visible region.

Various electronic devices consisting of biomolecules have been developed in the fields of clinic, pharmaceutical, and environment. There are several efforts to make a new-type electronic device for altering a conventional silicon-based device that has several physical and technical limitations. A bioelectronic device based on mimicking of natural electron transfer phenomenon has been investigated to suggest a new-type electronic device. Here, we introduced device concept, fabrication method, and working principles of the biomemory device consisting of recombinant azurin. ©2010 IEEE.
