To the Editor:Since 1027,when the Tian Sheng Bronze Statue showing acupoints and meridians was first introduced for medical practitioners,it has evolved to the currently used acupoints and meridians atlas in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).[1]To date,the acupoints represent defined areas on the body surface relative to certain *** acupoints in the extremity endings would connect anatomically with diverse associated visceral organs or tissues,forming a Meridian and Collateral *** on the atlas,each main meridian is usually a virtual line connecting a group of adjacent acupoints that correlate with certain visceral *** modern medical science,the anatomical structures of main meridians remain largely unclarified.

The memory degradation based online sequential extreme learning machine

In online learning, the contribution of old samples to a model decreases as time passes, and old samples gradually become invalid. Although the Online Sequential Extreme Learning Machine (OS-ELM) can avoid the repetitive training of old samples, invalid samples are still used, which goes against improving the accuracy of an OS-ELM model. The Online Sequence Extreme Learning Machine with Forgetting Mechanism (FOS-ELM) timely discards invalid samples, but it does not consider the differences among valid samples and then has the limitation on boosting the accuracy and generalization. To solve this issue, the Memory Degradation Based OS-ELM (MDOS-ELM) is proposed in this paper. The MDOS-ELM adjusts the weights of the old and new samples in real time by a self-adaptive memory factor, and simultaneously discards invalid samples. The self-adaptive memory factor is determined by two elements. One is the similarity between the new and old samples, and the other is the prediction errors of the current training samples on the previous model. The performance of the proposed MDOS-ELM is validated on both regression and classification datasets which include an artificial dataset and twenty-two real-world dataset. The results demonstrate that the MDOS-ELM model outperforms the OS-ELM and the FOS-ELM models on the accuracy and generalization.

Light field cameras are considered to have many potential applications since angular and spatial information is captured simultaneously. However, the limited spatial resolution has brought lots of difficulties in developing related applications and becomes the main bottleneck of light field cameras. In this paper, a learning-based method using residual convolutional networks is proposed to reconstruct light fields with higher spatial resolution. The view images in one light field are first grouped into different image stacks with consistent sub-pixel offsets and fed into different network branches to implicitly learn inherent corresponding relations. The residual information in different spatial directions is then calculated from each branch and further integrated to supplement high-frequency details for the view image. Finally, a flexible solution is proposed to super-resolve entire light field images with various angular resolutions. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods by a large margin in both visual and numerical evaluations. Furthermore, the proposed method shows good performances in preserving the inherent epipolar property in light field images.

Implementing Feedforward Neural Network Using DNA Strand Displacement Reactions

The ability of neural networks to process information intelligently has allowed them to be successfully applied in the fields of information processing, controls, engineering, medicine, and economics. The brain-like working mode of a neural network gives it incomparable advantages in solving complex nonlinear problems compared with other methods. In this paper, we propose a feedforward DNA neural network framework based on an enzyme-free, entropy-driven DNA reaction network that uses a modular design. A multiplication gate, an addition gate, a subtraction gate, and a threshold gate module based on the DNA strand displacement principle are cascaded into a single DNA neuron, and the neuron cascade is used to form a feedforward transfer neural network. We use this feedforward neural network to realize XOR logic operation and full adder logic operation, which proves that the molecular neural network system based on DNA strand displacement can carry out complex nonlinear operation and reflects the powerful potential of building these molecular neural networks.

In the computational biology, DNA strand displacement technique is used to construct the logic gate model and molecular circuits. But with the increase of number of the reaction strands, the basic logic gates cannot meet the accuracy in the reaction process. This paper improved the logical unit OR gate, AND gate to solve this problem on the basic of the seesaw model and the mechanism of DNA strand displacement reaction. Since the basic circuit of the decoder is an array of AND gates, the improvement module is applied to the decoder. The molecular circuit of decoder is constructed to realize the dynamic link between the input signal and the output signal. It is concluded that the sensitivity and accuracy of the improved decoder in the molecular circuit is improved by the Visual DSD software. The improvement module laid the foundation for the development of molecular circuits. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2017.

In this paper,we study a class of nonlinear fractional integro-differential equations,the fractional derivative is described in the Caputo *** the properties of the Caputo derivative,we convert the fractional integro-differential equations into equivalent integral-differential equations of Volterra type with singular kernel,then we propose and analyze a spectral Jacobi-collocation approximation for nonlinear integro-differential equations of Volterra *** provide a rigorous error analysis for the spectral methods,which shows that both the errors of approximate solutions and the errors of approximate fractional derivatives of the solutions decay exponentially in L^(∞)-norm and weighted L^(2)-norm.

The segmentation of motion capture data is to separate the different types of human motion data contains long movement sequence into motion clips with independent semantics in order to facilitate the storage in the database as well as medical analysis. This paper proposed a method for human motion capture data segmentation based on Laplacian Eigenmaps (LE) algorithm. Firstly, the LE algorithm is used to reduce the dimension of original data by realizing the mapping from the high dimensional data to the low dimensional space. And then a specified window was drawn in the low dimensional space which was used to calculate the space distance from frames in the specified window to each frame in the former fragment. Finally we detected the similarity to get the final segmentation points, thus obtained motion clips with independent semantics. The validity of the segmentation method is verified by experiment. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

The atlas of human acupoints and meridians has been utilized in clinical practice for almost a millennium although the anatomical structures and functions remain to be clarified. It has recently been reported that a long-distance interstitial fluid (ISF) circulatory pathway may originate from the acupoints in the extremities. As observed in living human subjects, cadavers and animals using magnetic resonance imaging and fluorescent tracers, the ISF flow pathways include at least 4 types of anatomical structures: the cutaneous-, perivenous-, periarterial-, and neural-pathways. Unlike the blood or lymphatic vessels, these ISF flow pathways are composed of highly ordered and topologically connected interstitial fibrous connective tissues that may work as guiderails for the ISF to flow actively over long distance under certain driving forces. Our experimental results demonstrated that most acupoints in the extremity endings connect with one or more ISF flow pathways and comprise a complex network of acupoint-ISF-pathways. We also found that this acupoint-ISF-pathway network can connect to visceral organs or tissues such as the pericardium and epicardium, even though the topographical geometry in human extremities does not totally match the meridian lines on the atlas that is currently used in traditional Chinese medicine. Based on our experimental data, the following working hypotheses are proposed: 1, there are one or more ISF flow pathways, including at least one cutaneous pathway, originated from an acupoint on the body surface. 2, the acupoints on the body surface specifically connect with certain visceral organs or tissues via ISF flow. And 3, the acupoint-originated ISF pathways constitute a complex connective network and can modulate the ISF and bio-signals in the microenvironments around cells in certain visceral organs or tissues from body surfaces. In the field of biologic computing and neural networks, DNA strand displacement technology performs well in computing, programming and information processing. In this paper, based on two-domain DNA strand displacement, the neural DNA perceptron is proposed to implement Boolean operations. Some operation instances are simulated by Visual DSD (DNA strand displacement) software in which details of simulation process were presented. Our results showed that the precision of the neural DNA perceptron is higher than that of a bio-sensor designed by Shi et al. Furthermore, extrapolating from the neural DNA perceptron, we presented a multi-bit numerical comparator to achieve multi-bit numerical comparisons, which received stable and intuitive simulation results. The neural DNA perceptron and the multi-bit numerical comparator are easy to operate and achieve satisfactory effects.

Nine Million Books and Eleven Million Citations: A Study of Book-Based Scholarly Communication Using OpenCitations

Books have been widely used to share information and contribute to human knowledge. However, the quantitative use of books as a method of scholarly communication is relatively unexamined compared to journal articles and conference papers. This study uses the COCI dataset (a comprehensive open citation dataset provided by OpenCitations) to explore books’ roles in scholarly communication. The COCI data we analyzed includes 445,826,118 citations from 46,534,705 bibliographic entities. By analyzing such a large amount of data, we provide a thorough, multifaceted understanding of books. Among the investigated factors are 1) temporal changes to book citations;2) book citation distributions;3) years to citation peak;4) citation half-life;and 5) characteristics of the most-cited books. Results show that books have received less than 4% of total citations, and have been cited mainly by journal articles. Moreover, 97.96% of books have been cited fewer than 10 times. Books take longer than other bibliographic materials to reach peak citation levels, yet are cited for the same duration as journal articles. Most-cited books tend to cover general (yet essential) topics, theories, and technological concepts in mathematics and statistics. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
