Event extraction is a challenging problem in information extraction, designed to extract structured information from unstructured text. The existing event extraction methods are mostly based on the pipeline model and use the traditional language representation model for word embedding. It is impossible to model the polysemy and the features is very simple, besides, the pipeline model is also easy to generate cascading errors. Aiming at the above problems, we propose a joint event extraction model, which combines part-of-speech features, entity features and word representation of BERT model. Because of the BERT can’t capture local features, we use multi-CNN to capture the local features of different scales. and further use BiLSTM to capture context features to assist joint event extraction. Experimental results show that the precision, recall and F 1 of the method on the CEC dataset are 88.83%, 90.91% and 89.86%, respectively, which are 1.61%, 3.6% and 2.6% higher than the PLMEE model.

ProxyBO: Accelerating Neural Architecture Search via Bayesian Optimization with Zero-Cost Proxies

Designing neural architectures requires immense manual efforts. This has promoted the development of neural architecture search (NAS) to automate the design. While previous NAS methods achieve promising results but run slowly, zero-cost proxies run extremely fast but are less promising. Therefore, it’s of great potential to accelerate NAS via those zero-cost proxies. The existing method has two limitations, which are unforeseeable reliability and one-shot usage. To address the limitations, we present ProxyBO, an efficient Bayesian optimization (BO) framework that utilizes the zero-cost proxies to accelerate neural architecture search. We apply the generalization ability measurement to estimate the fitness of proxies on the task during each iteration and design a novel acquisition function to combine BO with zero-cost proxies based on their dynamic influence. Extensive empirical studies show that ProxyBO consistently outperforms competitive baselines on five tasks from three public benchmarks. Concretely, ProxyBO achieves up to 5.41× and 3.86× speedups over the state-ofthe-art approaches REA and BRP-NAS. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Interactive fashion image manipulation, which enables users to edit images with sketches and color strokes, is an interesting research problem with great application value. Existing works often treat it as a general inpainting task and do not fully leverage the semantic structural information in fashion images. Moreover, they directly utilize conventional convolution and normalization layers to restore the incomplete image, which tends to wash away the sketch and color information. In this paper, we propose a novel Fashion Editing Generative Adversarial Network (FE-GAN), which is capable of manipulating fashion images by free-form sketches and sparse color strokes. FE-GAN consists of two modules: 1) a free-form parsing network that learns to control the human parsing generation by manipulating sketch and color; 2) a parsing-aware inpainting network that renders detailed textures with semantic guidance from the human parsing map. A new attention normalization layer is further applied at multiple scales in the decoder of the inpainting network to enhance the quality of the synthesized image. Extensive experiments on high-resolution fashion image datasets demonstrate that the proposed FE-GAN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on fashion image manipulation.

Aboveground Forest Biomass Generally Increases with Elevation Gradients in China’s Qinling–Daba Mountains

The complexity of forest ecosystems leads to differences in the distribution patterns of different vegetation types along elevation gradients. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of AGB variations along elevation gradients for different forest types and tree species components in the Qinling–Daba Mountains. Based on 329 field vegetation survey plots, including four sampling transects and four representative mountains, individual tree AGB was calculated using allometric biomass equations. Further, generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to investigate the relationships between AGB and elevation for four forest types (broadleaf forests, coniferous forests, mixed coniferousbroadleaf forests, and shrublands) and three AGB components (total AGB (tAGB), broadleaf species AGB (bAGB), and coniferous species AGB (cAGB)) across eight vegetation survey regions. The results showed that the AGB of different forest types is significantly related to elevation (p < 0.05), with broadleaf forest AGB showing a unimodal pattern with elevation, coniferous forest and mixed forest AGB increasing with elevation, and shrubland AGB exhibiting a noticeable rise at higher elevations. The AGB components across different vegetation survey regions also showed significant relationships with elevation (p < 0.05), with broadleaf species AGB displaying a monotonically increasing trend in regions with a small elevation range and exhibiting a unimodal or bimodal distribution in regions with a large elevation range, while coniferous species AGB generally increased with elevation. Although elevation significantly influenced forest AGB, the variation in R2 values indicated that elevation is not the sole determinant of AGB variation. This study improves the understanding of spatial patterns of forest biomass along elevation gradients.

Information on the Internet is fragmented and presented in different data sources, which makes automatic knowledge harvesting and understanding formidable for machines, and even for humans. Knowledge graphs have become prevalent in both of industry and academic circles these years, to be one of the most efficient and effective knowledge integration approaches. Techniques for knowledge graph construction can mine information from either structured, semi-structured, or even unstructured data sources, and finally integrate the information into knowledge, represented in a graph. Furthermore, knowledge graph is able to organize information in an easy-to-maintain, easy-to-understand and easy-to-use manner. In this paper, we give a summarization of techniques for constructing knowledge graphs. We review the existing knowledge graph systems developed by both academia and industry. We discuss in detail about the process of building knowledge graphs, and survey state-of-the-art techniques for automatic knowledge graph checking and expansion via logical inferring and reasoning. We also review the issues of graph data management by introducing the knowledge data models and graph databases, especially from a NoSQL point of view. Finally, we overview current knowledge graph systems and discuss the future research directions.

PRAD: Periapical Radiograph Analysis dataset and Benchmark Model Development

Deep learning (DL), a pivotal technology in artificial intelligence, has recently gained substantial traction in the domain of dental auxiliary diagnosis. However, its application has predominantly been confined to imaging modalities such as panoramic radiographs and Cone Beam Computed Tomography, with limited focus on auxiliary analysis specifically targeting Periapical Radiographs (PR). PR are the most extensively utilized imaging modality in endodontics and periodontics due to their capability to capture detailed local lesions at a low cost. Nevertheless, challenges such as resolution limitations and artifacts complicate the annotation and recognition of PR, leading to a scarcity of publicly available, large-scale, high-quality PR analysis datasets. This scarcity has somewhat impeded the advancement of DL applications in PR analysis. In this paper, we present PRAD-10K, a dataset for PR analysis. PRAD-10K comprises 10,000 clinical periapical radiograph images, with pixel-level annotations provided by professional dentists for nine distinct anatomical structures, lesions, and artificial restorations or medical devices, We also include classification labels for images with typical conditions or lesions. Furthermore, we introduce a DL network named PRNet to establish benchmarks for PR segmentation tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that PRNet surpasses previous state-of-the-art medical image segmentation models on the PRAD-10K dataset. With the development of IOT and 5G technology, people’s demand for information acquisition is more inclined to accuracy, intelligence and timeliness. How to help designer obtain the real-time information of specific product reviews from the massive online consumers and upgrade the new design strategy has become a hot topic for research. In this paper, we define the problem as an aspect extraction task, and propose a novel deep learning model that comprises of three modules: pre-training language model embedding, multi-scale transmission network and contextual summary, which aims to provide an end-to-end solution without any additional supervision. To this end, we adopt BERT to overcome the disadvantage of traditional embedding methods, which cannot combine contextual information. Multi-scale transmission network is proposed to integrate the Bi-GRU and a group of CNN networks to extract sequential and local features of words respectively. Contextual summary is a tailor-made representation distilled from the input sentence, conditioned on each current word, and thus can assist aspect prediction. Experimental results over three benchmark SemEval datasets clearly illustrate that our model can achieve the state-of-the-art performance.

Deep subspace clustering (DSC) with the auto-encoder and self-expression layer is of great concern due to encouraging performance. However, existing methods usually adopt a “single-task” strategy based on a single dataset, without considering other related tasks or data. As such, they cannot discover other useful information to improve the clustering task. Besides, the local structure preservation of the latent codes in mapping is usually ignored. In this paper, we therefore present an effective “multi-task” strategy via the self-supervised data augmentation, and propose a new end-to-end trainable Triplet Deep Subspace Clustering Network (TDSC-net). Specifically, TDSC-net firstly generates triplet data (i.e., anchor, positive and negative data) from input data by a spectral clustering module and a self-supervised data augmentation module. This can enable it to inherit the merits of self-supervised learning and multitask learning implicitly. After that, TDSC-net builds a triplet deep autoencoder network with a self-expression layer, which takes the triplet data as input, where they share the common network layers (i.e., autoencoder and self-expression layers) over the triple tasks for complementary learning and mutual supervision. A triplet loss is also included to retain the local information of deep latent codes, which will also benefit the self-expression. Furthermore, TDSC-net separates the self-expression layer from decoding process to improve the efficiency of reconstruction. Extensive results on several public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our triplet-task DSC strategy.

Recently, mobile crowdsensing has become a promising paradigm to collect rich spatial sensing data, by taking advantage of widely distributed sensing devices like smartphones. Based on sensing data, event detection can be conducted in urban areas, to monitor abnormal incidents like traffic jam. However, how to guarantee the detection accuracy is still an open issue, especially when unreliable users who may report wrong observations are considered. In this work, we focus on the problem of user recruitment in collaborative mobile crowdsensing, aiming to optimize the fine-grained detection accuracy in a large urban area. Unfortunately, the problem is proved to be NP-hard, which means there is no polynomial-time algorithm to achieve the optimal solution unless P NP. To meet the challenge, we first employ a probabilistic model to characterize the unreliability of users, and measure the uncertainty of inferring event occurrences given collected observations by Shannon entropy. Then, by leveraging the properties of adaptive monotonicity and adaptive submodularity, we propose an adaptive greedy algorithm for user recruitment, which is theoretically proved to achieve a constant approximation ratio guarantee. Extensive simulations are conducted, which show our proposed algorithm outperforms baselines under different settings. © 2019, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Understanding the spatial variations of evapotranspiration (ET) and its components on Tibetan Plateau (TP) is pivotal for grasping the regional water cycle and energy balance dynamics. Yet it is unclear how the changes of the intricate synergy among diverse environment factors significantly impacts the patterns of ET and its transformation state. Addressing this gap, this study employed observational data from 14 sites, utilizing the Shuttleworth-Wallace-Hu (SWH) model to investigate the spatial relationships between ET, its components, and influencing factors. Model parameters of SWH were optimized by Monte Carlo method, achieving a commendable simulation performance with a mean R2 value of 0.75. Our analysis reveals that in alpine meadow, the ratio of transpiration (T) to ET (T/ET) is generally higher (0.55) compared to alpine steppe (0.39). The T/ET values for hover around or below 0.5, indicating a balanced contribution of various ET components. Spatially, both PPT and LAI have an impact on ET and T/ET. PPT emerges as the primary driver of interannual spatial variations in ET, while LAI plays a crucial role in regulating T/ET. Our results further demonstrate that a transition from water-dominated to energy-dominated systems in TP grassland ecosystem at an approximately aridity index of 0.73. This is noteworthy considering the general application of an aridity index of 0.65 to delineate arid from humid regions. It implies that TP grasslands, within the 0.65-0.73 range, remain primarily water-driven. This insight holds substantial implications for comprehending water-energy dynamics in similar ecosystems, challenging the conventional binary categorization of arid and humid areas. Such findings are of immense significance in enhancing understanding of the intricate interactions of the water cycle between land and the atmosphere. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
