Structural damage detection (SDD) is one crucial step in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). A novel particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based sparse regularization approach is proposed for the SDD problem in this study. Where, the classical first-order sensitivity analysis and the l(1/2)-norm regularization are introduced to define the objective function, so the SDD problem is converted into a kind of optimization problem which may be solved by the PSO accordingly. The approach includes two steps: the model updating based on sensitivity analysis is employed for the SDD in the first step, and some rough damage locations of structures are obtained by the PSO. Then only the possible damage locations are considered and the PSO is further used to quantify damage extents in the second step for higher SDD accuracy. The illustrated numerical simulations show that the proposed approach can not only effectively locate structural damage but also quantify damage extents with good accuracy as well as strong robustness to noises.

This paper presents a perturbation approach to study the multi scale deflections in T300/QY8911 carbon fiber reinforced, delaminated laminates subjected to a transverse load. In previous works, the contact effects at the interfaces of the delaminated laminates were investigated. A contact factor was introduced to characterize the contact performances and was determined using the micro-mechanics of composite material. In this paper, asymptotic approaches are applied to analyze the large deflection of the delaminated laminates with nonlinear anti-penetrating constrains at the interfaces. Governing equations are solved using separation of variable and the asymptotic solutions are obtained from the Galerkin approach. Perturbation analysis is performed to demonstrate that(1) sublaminates above and below the delamination undergo a consistent global deflection;(2) local buckles occur on the interfaces of the delamination;and(3) the anti-penetrating contact performances are characterized by the local buckles. Furthermore, the asymptotic solutions reveal that the contact performances, i.e., the local buckling, are intrinsic properties of the laminates, relying only on the geometries of the delamination and the material properties. Numerical calculations are performed to demonstrate the application of the analytical solutions. The analytical solutions are in effect by comparing with the classic solutions and the well-established experimental results.

Structural damage detection is still a challenging problem owing to the difficulty of extracting damage-sensitive and noise-robust features from structure response. This article presents a novel damage detection approach to automatically extract features from low-level sensor data through deep learning. A deep convolutional neural network is designed to learn features and identify damage locations, leading to an excellent localization accuracy on both noise-free and noisy data set, in contrast to another detector using wavelet packet component energy as the input feature. Visualization of the features learned by hidden layers in the network is implemented to get a physical insight into how the network works. It is found the learned features evolve with the depth from rough filters to the concept of vibration mode, implying the good performance results from its ability to learn essential characteristics behind the data.

A novel PSO-based algorithm for structural damage detection using Bayesian multi-sample objective function

Significant improvements to methodologies on structural damage detection (SDD) have emerged in recent years. However, many methods are related to inversion computation which is prone to be ill-posed or ill-conditioning, leading to low-computing efficiency or inaccurate results. To explore a more accurate solution with satisfactory efficiency, a PSO-INM algorithm, combining particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and an improved Nelder-Mead method (INM), is proposed to solve multi-sample objective function defined based on Bayesian inference in this study. The PSO-based algorithm, as a heuristic algorithm, is reliable to explore solution to SDD problem converted into a constrained optimization problem in mathematics. And the multi-sample objective function provides a stable pattern under different level of noise. Advantages of multi-sample objective function and its superior over traditional objective function are studied. Numerical simulation results of a two-storey frame structure show that the proposed method is sensitive to multi-damage cases. For further confirming accuracy of the proposed method, the ASCE 4-storey benchmark frame structure subjected to single and multiple damage cases is employed. Different kinds of modal identification methods are utilized to extract structural modal data from noise-contaminating acceleration responses. The illustrated results show that the proposed method is efficient to exact locations and extents of induced damages in structures.

The R-function theory and quasi-Green function method(QGFM) is applied to solve the bending problem of clamped orthotropic thin plates with complicated boundary shape. Firstly the model governing differential equation of the problem is reduced to the boundary value problem of the biharmonic operator, and then it is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind by Green's formula. R-function theory and quasi-Green function are established by using the fundamental solution and the boundary equation of the problem. This function satisfies the homogeneous boundary condition of the problem. The singularity of the kernel of the integral equation is overcome by choosing a suitable form of the normalized boundary equation. The comparison with ANSYS finite element solution shows a good agreement. The proposed method is a novel and effective mathematical one.

From the different inner needs and personality characteristics of overseas students, the discussion of advanced mathematics teaching mode and teaching method is made. Break the traditional teaching framework of advanced mathematics, the problem of students be weary of learning advanced mathematics is solved. Research results have the general reference value to basic course teaching of overseas students of other major of science and technology.

An improved method based on singular value decomposition analysis was proposed for defect detection of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites using pulsed thermograph in this paper. A practical experimental set-up was developed. The thermal images collected were processed with improved singular value decomposition analysis. By combining thermographic signal reconstruction and mathematical morphology, the non-uniform background was further removed effectively. The heat transfers in CFRP sample with delaminated defects subject to pulsed thermal signal was simulated numerically with FE method. The absolute thermal contrast evaluation was analyzed and a new thermal sensitive indicator was proposed to provide more accurate estimation of the embedded damages in carbon fiber-reinforced composites. The effectiveness of the proposed thermal sensitive was examined experimentally and a comparison between the present and other sensitivities was finally performed. The result showed that, the defects in the CFRP specimen could be identified more clearly with the proposed sensitive.

Based on the Drucker-Prager yield criterion, the theoretical solution of stratigraphic deformation in tunnel excavation process is deduced by the cavity expansion theory. In view of soil loosening around the tunnel caused by the tunnel excavation process, the internal friction angle of the surrounding soil is not a constant but a function of normal stress. The piecewise linearization of the nonlinear yield function is used to analyze the elastoplastic solution of the cylindrical hole shrinkage. A comparison is conducted with a plastic zone in which the internal friction angle of the soil remains unchanged. It can be concluded that the radial stress, the tangential stress, the radial strain, and the tangential strain around the inner wall calculated from the former are smaller.

Cloud Computing-Based Time Series Analysis for Structural Damage Detection

The structural damage detection (SDD) and on-line integrity assessment is one of the fundamental objectives in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). Unfortunately, some of the existed SDD methodologies are time-consuming, and more efficient methods are needed as some large complex structures are assessed in practice. In this study, the cloud computing (CC) technology is introduced into the SDD domain for saving the computation cost and for improving the computation efficiency. The CC definition and application are introduced. Then MapReduce is described as its core technology and Hadoop platform adopted as its open source as well. The traditional time series analysis is separated into map and reduce function modules. In combination with the Hadoop, a new CC-based time series analysis method is proposed for SDD by combining CC technology with time series analysis and further by defining damage-sensitive feature (DSF). The performance and efficiency of the proposed CC-based SDD method is assessed by some numerical simulations for single and multiple damages of a two-story rigid frame, further by a series experimental data downloaded from the web site of the Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL), United States, for damage detection of a three-story building model under the linear and nonlinear damage conditions of structures. The illustrated results show that the new CC-based SDD method can effectively locate the structural damage and quantify the damage severity to some extent. It can save the computation cost and enhance the computing efficiency of SDD implementation. The more the damage cases are, the more significant the speedup ratio is. It is more beneficial to the analysis and processing of the mega data measured on site in the SHM field. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.
