Ancient architecture in Europe is one of the most historic and characteristic system in the world. It follows the order of combining structure and aesthetics. Researching in the pendentive used in Hagia Sophia, this paper explores that European ancient architecture is harmonious and unified in both structure and aesthetics.

Temperature influence or geothermal effect is pervasive in the carbon dioxide geological sequestration , GIP (gas in place) estimation, and the Coal Mine Methane (CMM) degasification process. The temperature effects on the adsorption process are not explicitly considered in previous gas diffusion tests. This study seeks to treat the adsorption–diffusion process as a unified process and then investigate the temperature influence effect on this process. Isothermal tests under different constant temperatures show that 1) Langmuir constant-a is independent of temperature, and Langmuir constant-b can be treated as a negative linear function of temperature in engineering applications. Two groups of diffusion tests were conducted: diffusion under constant temperature and diffusion with increasing temperature. The diffusion tests show that 2) for the diffusion process with increasing temperature, the equivalent diffusion coefficient (D eq ) increases with increasing temperature, and this relationship can be described by the revised Arrhenius-style equation. 3) For the diffusion process under constant temperature, the diffusion coefficient (D) is dependent on temperature and independent of adsorption equilibrium pressure . The relationship between diffusion coefficient and temperature can also be described using the revised Arrhenius-style equation. 4) Diffusion coefficients range from 8.53 × 10 −8 cm 2 /s to 1.97 × 10 −7 cm 2 /s when temperature rises from 30 °C to 90 °C.

A new covariance matrix is formulated from the impulse response function of the acceleration responses of a structure under general excitation. The components of the covariance matrix are proved to be functions of the modal parameters (modal frequency, mode shape and damping parameter) of a structure. Information from all the vibration modes of the structure limited by the sampling frequency contributes to these components. This contains more structural information than other parameters obtained from existing methods. The error produced in the modal extraction procedure is also avoided. A new damage index vector is proposed based on the components of the covariance matrix. A simply supported thirty-one bar plane truss structure is numerically studied. Damage location and damage quantification are investigated separately using the proposed damage index vector. A pattern assurance criterion is used to analyze the covariance data, and multiple rounds of computation are performed to reduce the candidate set of elements in a strategy to search for the damage location of the structure. An optimization technique is adopted to determine further the damage location and extent with good accuracy. Single damage scenarios with different noise levels are studied with satisfactory results.

We have produced stretchable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using the concept of kirigami, i.e., a combination of folding and cutting. The designated kirigami patterns have been discovered and implemented to achieve great stretchability (over 150%) to LIBs that are produced by standardized battery manufacturing. It is shown that fracture due to cutting and folding is suppressed by plastic rolling, which provides kirigami LIBs excellent electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. The kirigami LIBs have demonstrated the capability to be integrated and power a smart watch, which may disruptively impact the field of wearable electronics by offering extra physical and functionality design spaces.

This paper presents a close-form solution for the anti-penetrating postbuckling problem of fiber reinforced, rectangular laminates. The laminate has a through-width debonded region buried at the center position and is simply supported at its four edges subjected to the in-plane compressive load. Based on the previous analysis of the contact kinematics from micro mechanics of composite material, the nonlinear contact effects at the interfaces of the debonded region are considered and characterized by a contact factor. Governing equations are established and are solved using the perturbation approach. Asymptotic solutions from perturbation analysis are presented. It is found that for fiber reinforced, debonded laminates the postbuckling deformation involves global deflection and local buckling with amplitude of the global one 104 times larger than the local one. The global deflection is induced by the postbuckling load and the local buckling is caused by the anti-penetrating contact effects. Due to the contact effects, the load carry capacity of the delaminated laminate is tremendously enhanced. Further examination indicates that both the buckling load and the contact performances are intrinsic properties of the laminates. Parametric analyses show that (i) the buckling load decreases with the increasing of the delamination length and the delamination depth and is very sensitive to the changing of the aspect ratio, (ii) the contact performances, including the location and size of the contact areas, rely only on the geometries of the debonded region and the material properties but are hardly affected by the aspect ratio. The analysis is in effect by comparing with the well established results.

A series of tests were performed to investigate the creep characteristics of soil in interactive marine and terrestrial deposit of Pearl River Delta. The secondary consolidation test results show that the influence of consolidation pressure on coefficient of secondary consolidation is conditional, which is decided by the consolidation state. The ratio of coefficient of secondary consolidation and coefficient of compressibility (C-a/C-c) is almost a constant, and the value is 0.03. In the shear-box test, the direct sheer creep failure of soil is mainly controlled by shear stress rather than the accumulation of shear strain. The triaxial creep features are closely associated with the drainage conditions, and consolidation can weaken the effect of creep. When the soft soil has triaxial creep damage, the strain rate will increase sharply.
