The compressive behavior of woven carbon/epoxy laminate composites is investigated under in-plane and out-of-plane loading. The Material Testing System (MTS) and the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) are employed to test the quasi-static and high strain rate dynamic mechanical properties of the material, respectively. Dynamic compression properties are compared with those of static loading. It is observed that the failure strength varies with different fiber woven directions. The results indicate that the stress-strain curves, maximum compressive stress and strain all evolve as strain rate varies. The specimens are mainly damaged in shear failure mode under out-of plane loading and the shear failure mode is independent of loading states and strain rates (500-1000/s). Comparatively, the different failure mechanisms of the material between quasi-static and dynamic in-plane loading at strain rates ranging from 50 to 400/s are obtained and studied. Delamination is only found at high strain rates under in-plane dynamical loading while shear deformation and delamination are both found under in-plane quasi-static loading. Shear bands and deformation zones are also observed under in-plane quasi-static loading. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The variation of temperature distribution in the cup-shaped frozen soil wall is real-timely monitored during the whole process of the horizontal freezing reinforcement project in Yixian Bridge Station, the first phase in Line 2 of Nanjing Subway. The development characteristic of the temperature field at different depth is analyzed, and the formation time and developing speed of the frozen soil wall is further calculated. The monitoring results show that, the average growth rate of the temperature field at the interface between the frozen soil and the underground continuous wall is significantly faster than the one in the cylinder reinforced area. There is significant differences in the average growth rate of temperature field in the frozen soil wall at different area of the reinforcing plates.

Graduation practice, which is carried on after the students have completed all the major courses, is an important part of practical teaching. It is the basis of graduation design and thesis. We took students to a mine in Zhang Village, located in the middle energy area of Hebei Province, and realized some problems existing in the practice of mining engineering. The monitoring is carried out for deformation of the soil-mixing-wall structures used in Baijihu subway station. The horizontal displacement of deep soil is obtained, as well as the ground subsidence around the edges of the foundation pit. Their variation rules under the influence of some factors, such as soil excavation and support settings etc, is analyzed. The results show that during the process of SMW construction, it is necessary to monitor the horizontal displacement of deep soil and the ground subsidence around the edges of the foundation pit, especially during the early stage of excavation.

A Global Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm for Structural Damage Detection

Structural damage detection (SDD) is an important but still challenging task in the structural health monitoring (SHM) field. Many methodologies have been developed and broad application prospect are expected. However, there are still some difficulties when they are applied to the real structures. In this study, a novel global artificial fish swarm algorithm (GAFSA) is proposed for exploring a new solution to the SDD problem in the SHM field. Firstly, the basic theory of the GAFSA is introduced. The fish swarm behaviours inside water are simulated by the following four steps: random, preying, swarming and following behaviours, respectively. The artificial fish parameters are defined, the implementing procedure of GAFSA is expressed, and the computing performance of GAFSA is evaluated and compared with the basic artificial fish swarm algorithm by three test functions. Secondly, the SDD problem is modelled as a constrained optimization problem in mathematics, an objective function on optimization problem is defined, and the model updating-based SDD is hopefully solved by the proposed GAFSA, which is based on swarm intelligence and uses a population (or swarm) of fish to identify promising regions looking for a global solution. Some numerical simulations on single and multiple damage cases of both an ASCE 4-storey benchmark frame structure and a 2-storey rigid frame have been conducted for assessing the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed GAFSA. Finally, a laboratory experimental study on damage detection of a 3storey building model with four damage patterns was performed. The illustrated results show that the proposed GAFSA can not only locate the structural damage but also quantify the severity of damage with a good noise immunity.

The conventional approach to analysis the buckling of rectangular laminates containing an embedded delamination subjected to the in-plane loading is to simplify the laminate as a beam-plate from which the predicted buckling load decreases as the length of the laminate increases. Two-dimensional analyses are employed in this paper by extending the one-dimensional model to take into consideration of the influence of the delamination width on the buckling performance of the laminates. The laminate is simply supported containing a through width delamination. A new parameterβ defined as the ratio of delamination length to delamination width is introduced with an emphasis on the influence of the delamination size. It is found that （i） when the ratio β is greater than one snap-through buckling prevails, the buckling load is determined by the delamination size and depth only; （ii） as the ratio β continues to increase, the buckling load will approach to a constant value. Solutions are verified with the well established results and are found in good agreement with the latter.

Postbuckling Analysis of the Length of Transition Zone in a Buckle Propagating Pipeline

When a buckle is initiated in a pipe subjected to external pressure, it will propagate along the longitudinal direction of the pipe if the external pressure is greater than its buckle propagation pressure. For a steady state condition, the propagation is simply considered as the translation of the buckle along the pipeline. This paper presents a unique approach to determine the length of the transition zone in a buckle propagating pipe by analyzing the mechanism of postbuckling of the pipe subjected to the external pressure. Buckling is considered to occur locally in the shell, spreading over a certain length along the longitudinal axis of the shell. The governing equations are derived from the postbuckling theory. Approximate solutions are obtained from the Ritz method, using a plausible function of the flexural displacement created based on Timoshenko's ring solution of the transverse collapse mode. The postbuckling equilibrium path shows that the pipeline experiences unstable collapse until the two opposite points on the inner surface contact each other. The length of the transition zone is found to be proportional to the ratio of (radius)(3/2)/(thickness)(1/2) and is hardly affected by the material properties. The analysis is performed by comparing the obtained results with well-established predictions.

To prevent high concentration dust on whole-rock comprehensive mechanization driving face efficiently, air curtain dust drawing and purification system were developed. This system is consisted of two sections, air curtain dust drawing device and dust purification system device. It determines optimized parameters of air curtain drawing dust device by combining site actual conditions and has realized short distance 3d dust absorbing and random movement. After using the efficient dust control system for whole-rock comprehensive mechanization driving face on south main return way,the average dust-laying rate of total coal dust and respirable dust in manually operation department, respectively reach 91.6% and 90.5%.It shows that this system is a efficient means for dust control of whole-rock comprehensive mechanization driving face. For a long time, the rock roadway driving in Chinese mine mainly adopts digging and blasting,but this way is far from satisfaction to our country's efficient mine production because of its slow footage and inefficiency. Therefore, the part of mines in China has developed rock comprehensive mechanization tunneling technique to improve driving speed and efficiency for driving rock roadway. But with the improvement of mechanization degree,the amount of producing dust of whole-rock comprehensive mechanization driving face has a sharp increase,especially SiO2, which seriously harm staff's physical and mental health,moreover,dust has explosiveness that can produce great dangerous [1-3].To solve the above problems, we developed the efficient dust control system for whole-rock comprehensive mechanization driving face formed by controllable circulating wind system and air curtain dust drawing purification system, it can cut down dust concentration in driving face efficiently. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
