Global Sensitivity Analysis for a perfusion bioreactor system in tissue engineering

This work presents a global sensitivity analysis and simulations of a perfusion bioreactor process using the method of high-dimensional model representation (HDMR). This method was developed to express the input–output relationships of a complex model with a high dimensional input space. The comprehensive mathematical model of convection and diffusion in a perfusion bioreactor, combined with cell growth kinetics, is developed and implemented using Computational Fluid Dynamics (with the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics v5.5). The model describes the spatio-temporal evolution of glucose concentration, oxygen concentration, lactate concentration and cell density within a 3D polymeric scaffold. A quantitative analysis of the complex kinetic mechanisms using recent development of advanced mathematical approaches to global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis through HDMR can be exploited to investigate the important features of the perfusion bioreactor process as well as possible factors underlying qualitative discrepancies.

This work sets the foundations for the design of control algorithms to facilitate manufacturing of a cell growth process using a continuous perfusion bioreactor. The algorithms are designed to work with different types of cell cultures and deal with major disturbances that might appear in the process. Different types of control strategies are designed, implemented and tested. First, a comprehensive mathematical model of convection and diffusion in a perfusion bioreactor, combined with cell growth kinetics, is developed and implemented using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The model describes the spatio-temporal evolution of glucose concentration and cell density within a 3D polymeric scaffold. Since such a model is too complex to be used directly for control studies, a simplified version is used for the design of the controllers. Finally, the performances of the control strategies are validated against the original high-fidelity CFD model, thus closing the loop. The simulations show good performances and satisfactory behavior.

This paper studies the design of adaptive event-triggered protocols for consensus of linear multi-agent systems (MASs) with external disturbances. Different from most of the existing results that deal with undirected graphs, this paper addresses directed graphs, specifically graphs that are assumed to be strongly connected. Inspired by a recent development [1], this paper devises novel adaptive event-triggered protocols for linear MASs with all agents subject to external disturbances. Two specific designs of composite triggering conditions are analysed and discussed. Compared with the disturbance-free case, additional constraints need to be introduced to deal with external disturbances and moreover the time-dependent terms are allowed to take any finite functions, rather than a class of L1 functions.

Brain computer interface (BCI) offers disabled people a nonmuscular communication pathway. Event-related potential (ERP) is an efficient way to achieve the BCI system. One of important issues for ERP classification is the under sample problem, that is the feature dimension is very high while the sample number is very strictly limited. In this paper, we introduce a P300 feature extraction and classification framework using the sparse optimal score method for discriminative analysis by generalized elastic net model. In order to break the curse of dimension, regularized estimation of within-class covariance matrix is achieved and ℓ1 penalty is applied to learn sparse discriminant vectors. The optimization problem is solved by the alternating least square procedure. We test the proposed framework on P300 target detection task and experimental results indicate that it is able to improve the classification accuracy in P300-based BCI system. The efficient features extracted by our proposed framework provide overall better P300 classification accuracy than several baseline methods especially in the single trial and few training samples case.

This paper studies a kind of formation control problem with direction adjustment of discrete-time multi-agent systems. Different with existing works, the involving control strategy has a property that, not only promotes the desired formation, but also has rotational behaviors according to the designed direction of control. Based on several mathematical techniques, some sufficient criteria are obtained in terms of algebraic conditions. The obtained criteria show that the actual formation shape is capable of rotate with respect to the desirable direction if the whole systems execute some scheduled targets. Subsequently, an example is provided to illustrate the applicability of the presented formation control.

This paper proposes a novel dynamic adaptive event-triggered scheme to deal with consensus problems in a class of general linear multi-agent systems. Firstly, a fully distributed event-triggered consensus protocol is proposed by assigning a time-varying coupling weight for each edge. Then by introducing an additional internal dynamic variable, a dynamic adaptive event condition is skillfully constructed and Zeno behavior is also successfully excluded. Based on this, the asymptotic consensus is eventually achieved and the frequency of communication among agents is significantly reduced. Finally, one simulation example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we study a robust disturbance attenuation problem that arises when applying the Artstein–Kwon–Pearson reduction transformation for a class of uncertain Lipschitz nonlinear systems with input delay and external disturbances. A conventional predictor-based feedback controller is adopted with the control gain matrix carefully identified by solving a couple of sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals are constructed to guarantee that the robust disturbance attenuation problem can be solved by the proposed controller.
