Differential evolution (DE) is a simple but powerful evolutionary algorithm, which has been widely and successfully used in many areas. In this paper, an impulsive control method is introduced to the DE framework, and the impulsive DE (IpDE) is proposed for improving the performance of DE. The impulsive control operation instantly moves the individuals which do not update for continuous pre-defined generations to a desired state based on the individuals with better fitness values in the current population. This way, IpDE controls individuals' positions in the space domain according to the stagnation status of the population. In order to validate the effectiveness of IpDE, the presented framework is applied to the original DE algorithms, as well as several state-of-the-art DE variants. Experimental results exhibit that IpDE is a simple but effective framework to improve the performance of the studied DE algorithms.

This brief deals with the problem of master-slave synchronization for chaotic Lur'e systems with aperiodic sampled data. Specifically, a novel aperiodic adaptive event-triggered communication mechanism is introduced to reduce the transmission load, which covers the previous ones as special cases. By partially resorting to the time-dependent Lyapunov function, a new synchronization criterion is derived, which depends on both the upper and lower bounds of variable sampling interval. Finally, Chua's circuit system is chosen as an illustrative example to show the virtue and effectiveness of the achieved synchronization strategies.

Robust order scheduling in the fashion industry: A multi-objective optimization approach

—In the fashion industry, order scheduling focuses on the assignment of production orders to appropriate production lines. In reality, before a new order can be put into production, a series of activities known as pre-production events need to be completed. In addition, in real production process, owing to various uncertainties, the daily production quantity of each order is not always as expected. In this research, by considering the pre-production events and the uncertainties in the daily production quantity, robust order scheduling problems in the fashion industry are investigated with the aid of a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) called nondominated sorting adaptive differential evolution (NSJADE). The experimental results illustrate that it is of paramount importance to consider pre-production events in order scheduling problems in the fashion industry. We also unveil that the existence of the uncertainties in the daily production quantity heavily affects the order scheduling. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Masked GAN for unsupervised depth and pose prediction with scale consistency

Previous work has shown that adversarial learning can be used for unsupervised monocular depth and visual odometry (VO) estimation, in which the adversarial loss and the geometric image reconstruction loss are utilized as the mainly supervisory signals to train the whole unsupervised framework. However, the performance of the adversarial framework and image reconstruction is usually limited by occlusions and the visual field changes between frames. This paper proposes a masked generative adversarial network (GAN) for unsupervised monocular depth and ego-motion estimation. The MaskNet and Boolean mask scheme are designed in this framework to eliminate the effects of occlusions and impacts of visual field changes on the reconstruction loss and adversarial loss, respectively. Furthermore, we also consider the scale consistency of our pose network by utilizing a new scale-consistency loss, and therefore, our pose network is capable of providing the full camera trajectory over a long monocular sequence. Extensive experiments on the KITTI dataset show that each component proposed in this paper contributes to the performance, and both our depth and trajectory predictions achieve competitive performance on the KITTI and Make3D datasets. Process Design and Analysis of a Novel Heat Recovery Energy System for an Aromatics Complex

The aromatics complex is an energy-intensive process. Heat exchanger network (HEN) is one of the most effective ways for energy saving. It has been applied in existing aromatics complex. However, a large amount of low grade heat is still wasted. Therefore, there is a motivation to use organic Rankine cycle (ORC) to recover low grade heat so that the energy efficiency of the whole plant can be further improved. This study aims to propose a new low grade heat recovery energy system for the aromatics complex by integrating the ORC with HEN. An extended mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is first developed for the proposed system. The energy, exergy, and economic (3E) analysis are performed to evaluate the whole system performance and verify the technical and economic feasibility. The results show that the optimised proposed energy system performs with 9.05 % of ORC energy efficiency, 380.95 MW of recovered heat from the process streams, 82.13 % of the overall exergy efficiency, and -155.30 k$/year of the total annual cost. These results reveal the significant potential in energy savings and provide guidance to the aromatics complex needing to be retrofitted or to a new plant. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Techno-Economic Assessment of Modified Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Process for Direct Co2 Conversion into Jet Fuel

Direct use of CO2 through modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) process presents a viable approach for the production of carbon-neutral jet fuel. However, achieving high performance for the CO2-FTS process remains a significant challenge. Current technology can only achieve low CO2 conversion and low jet fuel yield using tailored catalysts, which hinders the commercial deployment of direct CO2-FTS process. This paper presents a techno-economic assessment (TEA) of jet fuel production via CO2-FTS process at commercial-scale. Two ex-situ water removal configurations: (a) multi-stage CO2-FTS process and (b) CO2-FTS with tail gas recycle process were conducted to assess their potential for performance improvement. Process performance was evaluated using a model developed in Aspen Plus® linking with Aspen Custom Modeller®, while economic evaluation was carried out in Aspen Process Economic Analyzer®. The CO2-FTS model was based on first principles and modified Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution. Results indicated that both ex-situ water removal configurations can significantly improve the process performance. CO2-FTS process with 90% tail gas recycle has the best performance for both technical and economic analysis. The process achieved 85.8% CO2 conversion and 35.6% jet fuel yield with the lowest energy demand of 5.30 MWh per tonne of produced jet fuel. Moreover, it boasts the lowest minimum selling price (MSP) of jet fuel at $2.6/kg despite incurring the second-highest capital expenditure cost of M$ 451.3. A comparison of the two ex-situ water removal configurations at 61.9% and 76.5% CO2 conversion, suggests that both processes exhibit comparable technical performances, yet the recycling of tail gas holds the potential to reduce economic costs. Consequently, this study will inspire researchers on process improvement and cost reduction of the commercial-scale CO2-FST jet fuel production. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Modeling of batch process based on higher order partial least squares

The products of batch processes are closely related to the daily life of modern people, and it is crucial for batch process monitoring to establish a model based on the normal process data sets. In this paper, according to the characteristics of batch process, a new generalized multilinear regression model, termed the higher order partial least squares (HOPLS), is introduced with the aim to better model the three-way batch data. It differs substantially from the traditional modeling approach, and instead of unfolding the three-way array to a two-way array, it explains the data by a sum of orthogonal Tucker tensors. Higher order orthogonal iteration (HOSVD), tensor transformation and higher order orthogonal iteration (HOOI) are used to find the latent vectors, which contain the maximum information of independent variables and dependent variables simultaneously. And the loading vectors are calculated at the same time. For the new observation values, the dependent variables will be predicted through the output of the model. Finally, the feasibility and efficiency of the method are verified through the PenSim2.0 simulation platform. © All Rights Reserved

In this paper, we investigate the state estimation problem over multiple Markovian packet drop channels. In this problem setup, a remote estimator receives measurement data transmitted from multiple sensors over individual channels. By the method of Markovian jump linear systems, an optimal stationary estimator that minimizes the error variance in the steady state is obtained, based on the mean-square (MS) stabilizing solution to the coupled algebraic Riccati equations. An explicit necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of the MS stabilizing solution, which coincides with that of the standard Kalman filter. More importantly, we provide a sufficient condition under which the MS detectability with multiple Markovian packet drop channels can be decoupled, and propose a locally optimal stationary estimator but computationally more tractable. Analytic sufficient and necessary MS detectability conditions are presented for the decoupled subsystems subsequently. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the results on the MS stabilizing solution, the MS detectability, and the performance of the optimal and locally optimal stationary estimators. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper is concerned with the sampled-data stabilization problem for a class of linear systems. Different from the input-delay approach that has been widely used in analyzing the stabilization problem of sampled-data systems, an extended form of the celebrated Halanay inequality is developed for sampled-data systems so as to study the stabilization problem of linear systems under aperiodic sampled-data control. Based on the extended Halanay inequality, the stabilization problem is solved for linear sampled-data systems, where it is required that the gain should be strictly less than the decay rate and then the upper bound of the sampling intervals can be estimated. In order to enlarge the upper bound of the sampling intervals, a further extension of the developed Halanay inequality is made. Then some new conditions are derived to ensure the exponential stability of linear sampleddata systems, where the upper bound of the sampling intervals is allowed to violate the condition of the Halanay inequality. Subsequently, the obtained results are applied to deal with the consensus problem of linear multi-agent systems.
