Helicity-Controlled Spin Hall Angle in 2D Altermagnets with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

We investigated the efficiency of charge-to-spin conversion in two-dimensional Rashba altermagnets,a class of materials that combines the characteristics of both ferromagnets and *** quantum linear response theory,we quantified the longitudinal and spin Hall conductivities in this system and demonstrated a substantial enhancement in the spin Hall angle below the band crossing point through the dual effects of relativistic spin–orbit interaction and nonrelativistic altermagnetic exchange ***,the results showed that the skew scattering and intrinsic mechanisms arising from Fermi sea states are almost negligible in this system,in contrast to conventional ferromagnetic Rashba *** findings not only elucidate the spin dynamics in Rashba altermagnets but also pave the way for developing novel strategies for manipulating charge-to-spin conversion via sophisticated control of noncollinear and collinear out-of-plane spin textures.

With the widespread use of GPS-enabled devices and services, trajectory data fuels services in a variety of fields, such as transportation and smart cities. However, trajectory data often contains errors stemming from inaccurate GPS measurements, low sampling rates, and transmission interruptions, yielding low-quality trajectory data with negative effects on downstream services. Therefore, a crucial yet tedious endeavor is to assess the quality of trajectory data, serving as a guide for subsequent data cleaning and analyses. Despite some studies addressing general-purpose data quality assessment, no studies exist that are tailored specifically for trajectory data. To more effectively diagnose the quality of trajectory data, we propose T-Assess, an automated trajectory data quality assessment system. T-Assess is built on three fundamental principles: i) extensive coverage, ii) versatility, and iii) efficiency. To achieve comprehensive coverage, we propose assessment criteria spanning validity, completeness, consistency, and fairness. To provide high versatility, T-Assess supports both offline and online evaluations for full-batch trajectory datasets as well as real-time trajectory streams. In addition, we incorporate an evaluation optimization strategy to achieve assessment efficiency. Extensive experiments on fourreal-life benchmark datasets offer insight into the effectiveness of T Assess at quantifying trajectory data quality beyond the capabilities of state-of-the-art data quality systems. © 2025, VLDB Endowment, All rights reserved.

Selecting a good execution plan can significantly improve the query efficiency of Spark SQL. Several machine learning-based techniques have been proposed to select good execution plans for DBMS, but none of them perform well on Spark SQL due to the following issues.(1) Limited compatibility with Spark SQL: these approaches rely on physical operator enumeration, while Spark SQL doesn’t support it;(2) Unreliable cost estimation: they often select execution plans with poor performance due to inaccurate cost estimation;(3) Time-consuming plan enumeration: they take much time to generate a large number of candidate execution plans in Spark *** overcome these issues, in this paper, we propose LEAP, the first learned query optimizer tailored for Spark SQL, which can be integrated seamlessly into Spark SQL and solves the compatibility issue. Also, to avoid the unreliable cost value estimation, LEAP selects execution plans with an estimation-free method, which directly performs comparisons between the plans. Furthermore, LEAP employs an efficient progressive plan enumeration algorithm with pruning techniques to find better plans with fewer enumerations. Extensive experiments on three public benchmarks show the effectiveness of LEAP. It reduces the end-to-end execution time of the native optimizer by up to 54% and other learned methods by up to 94%. © 2025, VLDB Endowment, All rights reserved.

Large language models (LLMs) need knowledge updates to meet the ever-growing world facts and correct the hallucinated responses, facilitating the methods of lifelong model editing. Where the updated knowledge resides in memories is a fundamental question for model editing. In this paper, we find that editing either long-term memory (direct model parameters) or working memory (nonparametric knowledge of neural network activations/representations by retrieval) will result in an impossible triangle-reliability, generalization, and locality can not be realized together in the lifelong editing settings. For long-term memory, directly editing the parameters will cause conflicts with irrelevant pretrained knowledge or previous edits (poor reliability and locality). For working memory, retrieval-based activations can hardly make the model understand the edits and generalize (poor generalization). Therefore, we propose WISE to bridge the gap between memories. In WISE, we design a dual parametric memory scheme, which consists of the main memory for the pretrained knowledge and a side memory for the edited knowledge. We only edit the knowledge in the side memory and train a router to decide which memory to go through when given a query. For continual editing, we devise a knowledge-sharding mechanism where different sets of edits reside in distinct subspaces of parameters and are subsequently merged into a shared memory without conflicts. Extensive experiments show that WISE can outperform previous model editing methods and overcome the impossible triangle under lifelong model editing of question answering, hallucination, and out-of-distribution settings across trending LLM architectures, e.g., GPT, LLaMA, and Mistral. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Deep learning models, particularly pre-trained language models (PLMs), have become increasingly important for a variety of applications that require text/language processing. However, these models are resource-intensive and often require costly hardware such as dedicated GPU servers. In response to this issue, we present SMILE, a novel prototype system for efficient deployment and management of such models in the cloud. Our goal is to build a cloud platform from which tenants can easily derive their own custom models, and rent PLM processors to run inference services on these models at reduced costs. To facilitate this, we present a co-design of cost-effective storage and computation scheme for managing massive customized PLMs with constrained hardware resources via effective resource sharing and multiplexing. Our system consists of four core components: vPLM creator, vPLM storage appliance, vPLM trainer, and vPLM processor, which allow tenants to easily create, store, train, and use their customized PLM in the cloud without the need for dedicated hardware or maintenance. In particular, vPLM processors are virtualized from a physical machine, and are designed to have a multi-tenant nature, enabling efficient utilization of resources by precomputing the intermediate representation of PLMs and using adapters to provide customization instead of training the entire model. This allows tenants to host their PLMs in the cloud at minor costs. In our demonstration, we show that over 10,000 models can be hosted on one single machine without compromising the inference speed and accuracy. Overall, our system provides a convenient and cost-effective solution for tenants to host and manage PLMs in the cloud for their customized tasks. © 2023 ACM.

Modern advanced large language model (LLM) applications often prepend long contexts before user queries to improve model output quality. These contexts frequently repeat, either partially or fully, across multiple queries. Existing systems typically store and reuse the keys and values of these contexts (referred to as prefix KVs) to reduce redundant computation and time to first token (TTFT). When prefix KVs need to be stored on disks due to insufficient CPU memory, reusing them does not always reduce TTFT, as disk I/O latency is high. In this paper, we propose IMPRESS, an importance-informed multi-tier prefix KV storage system to reduce I/O delay for LLM inference by only loading important prefix KVs. IMPRESS first leverages the insight that there is significant similarity in important token index sets across attention heads and introduces an I/O-efficient important KV identification algorithm. It then optimizes prefix KV storage and caching through importance-informed KV management, reducing TTFT during model inference. Our experimental results show that IMPRESS can reduce TTFT by up to 2.8× compared to state-of-the-art systems, while maintaining comparable inference accuracy. © 2025 FAST. All Rights Reserved.

Math word problem (MWP) represents a critical research area within reading comprehension, where accurate comprehension of math problem text is crucial for generating math expressions. However, current approaches still grapple with unresolved challenges in grasping the sensitivity of math problem text and delineating distinct roles across various clause types, and enhancing numerical representation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a Numerical Magnitude Aware Multi-Channel Hierarchical Encoding Network (NMA-MHEA) for math expression generation. Firstly, NMA-MHEA implements a multi-channel hierarchical context encoding module to learn context representations at three different channels: intra-clause channel, inter-clause channel, and context-question interaction channel. NMA-MHEA constructs hierarchical constituent-dependency graphs for different levels of sentences and employs a Hierarchical Graph Attention Neural Network (HGAT) to learn syntactic and semantic information within these graphs at the intra-clause and inter-clause channels. NMA-MHEA then refines context clauses using question information at the context-question interaction channel. Secondly, NMA-MHEA designs a number encoding module to enhance the relative magnitude information among numerical values and type information of numerical values. Experimental results on two public benchmark datasets demonstrate that NMA-MHEA outperforms other state-of-the-art models. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Distributed training of graph neural networks (GNNs) has become a crucial technique for processing large graphs. Prevalent GNN frameworks are model-centric, necessitating the transfer of massive graph vertex features to GNN models, which leads to a significant communication bottleneck. Recognizing that the model size is often significantly smaller than the feature size, we propose LeapGNN, a feature-centric framework that reverses this paradigm by bringing GNN models to vertex features. To make it truly effective, we first propose a micrograph-based training strategy that leverages a refined structure to enhance locality, combined with the model migration technique, to minimize remote feature retrieval. Then, we devise a feature pre-gathering approach that merges multiple fetch operations into a single one to eliminate redundant feature transmissions. Finally, we employ a micrograph-based merging method that adjusts the number of micrographs for each worker to minimize kernel switches and synchronization overhead. Our experimental results demonstrate that LeapGNN achieves a performance speedup of up to 4.2× compared to the state-of-the-art method, namely P3 © 2025 FAST. All Rights Reserved.

The remarkable capabilities of modern large language models are rooted in their vast repositories of knowledge encoded within their parameters, enabling them to perceive the world and engage in reasoning. The inner workings of how these models store knowledge have long been a subject of intense interest and investigation among researchers. To date, most studies have concentrated on isolated components within these models, such as the Multilayer Perceptrons and attention head. In this paper, we delve into the computation graph of the language model to uncover the knowledge circuits that are instrumental in articulating specific knowledge. The experiments, conducted with GPT2 and TinyLLAMA, have allowed us to observe how certain information heads, relation heads, and Multilayer Perceptrons collaboratively encode knowledge within the model. Moreover, we evaluate the impact of current knowledge editing techniques on these knowledge circuits, providing deeper insights into the functioning and constraints of these editing methodologies. Finally, we utilize knowledge circuits to analyze and interpret language model behaviors such as hallucinations and in-context learning. We believe the knowledge circuits hold potential for advancing our understanding of Transformers and guiding the improved design of knowledge editing. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation.
