In this paper, we propose a unified TDMA-based scheduling protocol for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications. In the proposed TDMA-based scheduling protocol, the roadside infrastructure collects the information from the vehicles within its communication coverage through a control channel at the beginning of each transmission frame and then decides how to allocate the time slots to the vehicles for their data transmission requests based on a new designed weight-factor-based scheduler. The provided weight factor jointly takes into consideration the channel quality of communication links, the speed based fairness among vehicles, and different access categories. Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed scheduling protocol in terms of the network throughput performance, the fairness among the vehicles, and different accessing priorities of different access categories.

Video detection is one of the primary collection means of traffic states in Parallel traffic Management systems (PtMS). In order to accurately and automatically obtain road areas in highway surveillance videos, this paper presents an automatic detection algorithm based on the frequency-domain information of video images. This algorithm uses the frequency-domain feature that is produced by the vehicles passing through road areas in videos, to realize automatic segmentation and recognition of the road areas. The experiment comparing with the traditional vehicle-tracking-based method, which uses the information in the time-space domain, illustrates the advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Discovering temporal patterns and changes in tobacco use has important practical implications in tobacco control. This paper presents one of the first comprehensive international studies of seasonal smoking patterns based on online searches performed. Using periodogram and cross-correlation, we find that smoking-related search behavior shows strong seasonality effect across countries. Extracting emotions from online reviews is crucial to many security-related applications as well as applications in other domains. Traditional approaches to emotion extraction have mainly focused on mining the polarities of opinions or using annotated data to extract emotion types. Emotion theories, which identify the underlying cognitive structure and emotional dimensions that are key to generate emotions, have almost been totally ignored in previous work. To facilitate the automatic extraction of emotions from textual data, in this paper, we propose an emotion model based approach to emotion extraction from online reviews. Informed by the widely used OCC emotion model, we employ a statistical method to extract emotion words with their dimension values from texts, and implement OCC model to obtain emotions based on the emotion-dimension dictionary. We conduct an empirical study using security-related news reviews. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

In sponsored search auctions, advertisers have to distribute the budget to a series of temporal slots in order to maximize the expected revenue. There exists a budget demand for each temporal slot, which can not be known exactly by the advertiser due to some uncertainties in the search marketing environments. The estimation of the value range of budget demand in a temporal slot seriously affects the advertising performance. In this paper we study the effect of the value range on the revenue and conduct some experiments to validate our model and identified properties with the real-world data collected from practical advertising campaigns. Experimental results show that, under a certain condition, (a) the higher estimation of the upper bound and the lower bound might increase the expected revenue, and (b) the expected revenue is positively proportional to the mean value of the value range and is negatively proportional to the size.

Till now, most lawn is still irrigated manually or timely. That means lack of proper irrigation strategy and information management ability. However, irrational irrigation method will not only lead to unhealthy growth of lawn, but also waste of water. A new idea for lawn intelligent remote irrigation was put forward. The smart sprinkler strategy was created by researching the characters of lawn, such as water demand, heat resistance and diseases law. And the embeded control system can apply the strategy to irrigate intelligently. Tying the urban lawn features, the system was designed to be driven by solar, which makes it an energy self-sufficiency system. What's more, the sprinkler system gains the CAN bus-based network management function, which simplify the user's contol and management. Finally, the experimental results show that the system has the advantages of good effect, low cost, high reliability, easy maintenance, etc. And it will meet the demand of energy saving and environmental protection.

Among the most important and distinctive actionable knowledge are actionable behavioral rules that can directly and explicitly suggest specific actions to take to influence the behavior in the users' best interest. However, in mining such rules, it often occurs that different rules may suggest the same actions with different expected utilities, which we call conflicting rules. To resolve the conflicts, a previous pruning method was proposed. However, inconsistency of the measure for rule pruning may hinder its performance. To overcome this problem, we develop a new pruning method to achieve rule pruning in actionable rule discovery. We conduct several experiments to test our proposed approach and evaluate the sensitivity of the weight parameter. Empirical results based on a benchmark terrorism dataset indicate that our approach outperforms those from previous research.

In this paper, we for the first time consider the space-time network coding (STNC) to propose a novel cooperative data dissemination strategy in the time-division multiple access (TDMA) manner for the vehicle network, to overcome the short-comings of the traditional network coding (NC) techniques with carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol, i.e., high signal detection complexity and channel collision problem. An optimal relay selection strategy in the procedure of cooperative data dissemination is proposed to maximize the average system capacity for the data dissemination. In a addition, a suboptimal relay selection strategy is put forward to reduce the computation complexity and thus makes the developed data dissemination strategy more practical. Compared with the non-cooperative data dissemination, the proposed cooperative data dissemination via STNC has better performance in terms of the average system capacity, the average user equipment (UE) capacity, and the average data dissemination delay.

The design and control methods of robotic system for vascular interventional surgery is studied in this paper. By considering the characteristics of vascular interventional surgery and operation habits of surgeon, a master-slave remote control catheter system is presented. The system consists of three parts: the operation handle, the catheter manipulator and the host computer. The operation handle is designed to simulate the surgeon's surgical procedure, and the catheter manipulator tracks the handle's movements in both translation and rotation directions. Real time communication between the operation handle and the catheter manipulator has been built based on the host computer. Effectiveness and speed tracking performance between the catheter manipulator and the handle was validated by simulation experiments on a human vascular model.
