Haptic-Aided Navigation Vehicle: Enhancing Obstacle Detection in Blind Spots and Transparent Object Scenarios

As autonomous mobile robots are increasingly deployed in complex environments, traditional vision sensors and LiDAR encounter considerable limitations, particularly in detecting obstacles in blind spots or transparent objects. To address the issue of blind spots, we design a specialized haptic sensing structure and develop the haptic-aided navigation vehicle (HANV). This system integrates haptic sensors and LiDAR to deliver comprehensive perception, significantly enhancing close-range obstacle detection in areas that are typically beyond the range of conventional sensors. To tackle the challenge of transparent obstacles, which are often undetected by both vision and LiDAR sensors, we employ a fusion of haptic sensors and LiDAR. The haptic system provides physical contact feedback, ensuring reliable detection of transparent obstacles such as glass, while LiDAR offers long-range sensing capabilities. This combination enables HANV to navigate effectively in environments with transparent obstacles, overcoming the limitations of traditional sensing systems. Experiment results indicate that the proposed haptic and LiDAR integration substantially improves obstacle detection in both blind spots and environments with transparent obstacles. HANV achieves high success rates, minimal collisions, and efficient obstacle avoidance, particularly excelling in complex, confined spaces where conventional systems prove inadequate. Introduction: Various studies were conducted focused on the coal-to-gas (CTG) impacts on urban PM2.5 during its implementation. However, the continuity of CTG effectiveness on PM2.5 control in the post CTG remained unclear, especially in rural area, retarding the further emission-control policy optimization. To address this gap, we examined the wintertime rural PM2.5 variations within the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei during the non-epidemic-lockdown period of winter 2020–2022. Of which, 2020 holds the most stringent CTG enforcement, 2021 marks the conclusion of CTG, and 2022 represents the post CTG. Methods: In this study, the PM2.5 levels in rural areas of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region were monitored during the winters of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Meanwhile, multiple chemical analysis methods were employed to determine its chemical components. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling and Potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis were employed to analyze the contributions of different sources to PM2.5. Results and Discussion: PM2.5 exhibited an average decrease of 30.4%, and PMF modeling indicated the contributions of coal combustion (CC) to PM2.5 fell from 22.4% in 2020 to 17.8% in 2021, and further to 10.8% by 2022, highlighting the enduring CTG effectiveness. The continuously decreasing CC-specific As, Pb, and SO42– was another evidence for scattered coal prohibition. Reluctantly, the biomass burning (BB) contributions held higher increase of 17.2% in 2021–2022 than 8.86% in 2020–2021, and it has leapt to be the largest PM2.5 contributor (25.4%) in winter 2022. The natural gas shortage and subsidy reduction in winter 2022, as well as the man, and forced demolition of coal-stoves in winter 2022 should be the main inducements. Contrary to the recent upward trend of secondary aerosols, SO42–, NO3–, and NH4+ showed a downward trend, with annual average dropped of 52.6%, 23.4%, and 53.8%, respectively. With the continuous growth of the automobile trade, the inefficiency of traditional cargo transshipment in Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO/RO) terminals has become increasingly pronounced. As a result, the adoption of autonomous transportation robot (ATR) for the automatic handling of finished vehicles has seen significant growth. However, ATRs designed for this purpose face several limitations, including suboptimal mobility performance and the necessity for additional infrastructure to support their operation. This paper introduces a novel ATR that offers enhanced flexibility and operational capability. To further optimize the positioning of LiDAR, we develop a multi-stage LiDAR fusion algorithm for the precise localization of finished vehicles, incorporating an event-triggered decision-making approach to improve positioning accuracy. Based on the accurate positioning data, we propose a docking strategy consisting of two key phases: the approach phase and the docking phase. During the docking phase, an enhanced Model Predictive control (MPC) algorithm, integrated with a Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network, is designed to enable real-time adjustment of the robot's docking attitude. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through real-world robot experimentals demonstrating its practical viability. © 2025

Nonlinear Dynamic Modeling and Analysis of Rigid-Flexible Coupling Spacecrafts with Time-Varying Temperature Distribution

When establishing the dynamic model of a rigid-coupled spacecraft, the traditional linear method requires the flexible structure to satisfy the small deformation assumption. However, the wide range of motion of the large spacecraft may lead to nonlinear deformation of the flexible structure. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic model of the rigid-flexible coupling spacecraft is established during in-orbit operation. Firstly, the kinetic energy of the rigid-flexible spacecraft is derived by incorporating the nonlinear deformations with second-order coupling terms. Secondly, the time-varying temperature distribution along the thickness direction of the flexible structure is derived by using a one-dimensional thermal conduction equation. Then, the nonlinear time-varying coupled dynamics equations of the rigid-flexible coupling spacecraft are obtained by the Hamilton’s variational principle. The discrete equations are derived by using the assumed modal method (AMM). Finally, the results obtained through numerical calculations indicate that the nonlinear model accurately predicts the dynamical stiffening phenomenon as the attitude rotational velocity of the rigid hub increases. At the same time, the effects of the temperature, the orbital radius and structure size on the response amplitude of the spacecraft are obtained. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Unraveling tensor structures in correct-by-design controller synthesis

Formal safety guarantees on the synthesis of controllers for stochastic systems can be obtained using correct-by-design approaches. These approaches often use abstractions as finite-state Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). As the state space of these MDPs grows, the curse of dimensionality makes the computational and memory cost of the probabilistic guarantees, quantified with dynamic programming, scale exponentially. In this work, we leverage decoupled dynamics and unravel, via dynamic programming operations, a tree structure in the Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (CPD) of the value functions. For discrete-time stochastic systems with syntactically co-safe linear temporal logic (scLTL) specifications, we provide provable probabilistic safety guarantees and significantly alleviate the computational burden. We provide numerical studies and validations of the theoretical results on several typical case studies and showcase that the uncovered tree structure enables efficient reductions in the computational burden. Adaptive Cooperative Estimation and Guidance Against Unknown Maneuvering Target

A critical challenge in missile guidance is the frequent inaccessibility of essential target information by on-board seekers. This paper studies the three-dimensional cooperative guidance issue of multiple missiles simultaneously attacking an unknown maneuvering target. Different from most existing research, the pitch and yaw lead angles of a maneuvering target are entirely unknown, while the position and velocity information is only accessible to neighboring missiles. An adaptive distributed estimator is designed to estimate the target information over a directed communication network, generating a transmitted target with similar maneuverability to the actual target for each missile. Boundedness of the estimation errors are guaranteed within a prescribed time. Subsequently, a modified guidance law that integrates proportional navigation (PN) and coordination components is developed for simultaneously tracking the trajectories of the transmitted targets. The superiority of the developed adaptive cooperative estimation and guidance approach is confirmed through simulations. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

The sccheduling for pushing plan during the coking process critically affects the efficiency and stability of production. However, the complexity with mutiple-stage during production makes it difficult to design an efficient coke pushing plan. To address this issue, this paper proposes a scheduling method based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Firstly, the fuzzy c-means clustering is utilized to categorize actual operating conditions as either normal or abnormal, thereby facilitating the scheduling of pushing plan under disparate conditions. Subsequently, the scheduling problem for the pushing plan is transformed into a traveling salesman problem, and scheduling models under various conditions are established. Finally, to accelerate the convergence and enhance the algorithm's global search capability, an adaptive inertia adjustment strategy is employed to dynamically regulate the velocity and position of particles. The proposed method has been implemented in the coking process. Through the analysis of application results, the completion coefficient of pushing plan has been increased by 4.25%, demonstrating that the proposed has advantages in scheduling the pushing plan during the actual coking process. © 2025 IEEE.

BeltLineNet: A Shape-Prior-Guided Lightweight Network for Real-Time Deviation Detection in Circular Pipe Conveyors

Belt deviation in circular pipe conveyor systems could lead to material spillage, environmental contamination, reduced efficiency, and accelerated belt wear. Real-time belt deviation detection is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient operation. However, existing methods, primarily developed for flat-belt systems, heavily rely on distinct belt-background semantics, making them unsuitable for circular conveyors where indistinct target features, motion blur, and occlusions pose significant challenges. To address these issues, we reformulate the deviation detection task as an object detection problem, proposing BeltLineNet, a lightweight, real-time deviation detection network specifically designed for circular pipe conveyors. Our method integrates explicit feature learning with a coarse-to-fine global feature fusion mechanism, enhancing belt line representation under complex conditions. Additionally, a shape-prior loss strategy is introduced to improve supervision during training, ensuring more accurate detection of elongated targets. The model is also optimized for real-time deployment through layer-adaptive pruning, achieving a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency. Extensive comparative experiments involving 8 state-of-the-art (SOTA) feature extraction networks and 6 feature enhancement strategies on a self-collected dataset under industrial conditions demonstrate that BeltLineNet surpasses SOTA feature extraction and fusion networks, improving average precision (AP) by 8.23% before pruning and 6.33% after pruning. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

The nitrogen cycle, essential for the transformation and circulation of nitrogen, involves key processes such as nitrogen fixation, nitrification, denitrification, and ammonification. Microorganisms are crucial in these processes, influencing water quality through energy conversion and nitrogen cycling. Eutrophication, driven by human activities, increases exogenous nitrogen input, accelerating nitrogen cycling and loss, boosting greenhouse gas emissions, and impacting aquatic ecosystems. Functional genes in the nitrogen cycle, such as amoA (nitrification), nirS, nirK, nosZ (denitrification), and hzs and hzo (anaerobic ammonium oxidation), are indicators of nitrogen transformation in sediments. Environmental factors like temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), organic matter content, nitrogen levels, pH, and salinity significantly influence these genes’ expression and regulation. For example, temperature changes can affect nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria activities, DO levels impact microbial growth and metabolism, and higher organic matter content stimulates the expression of nitrogen cycle genes. Understanding how these environmental factors affect nitrogen cycling genes is crucial for addressing eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. This review focuses on the adaptability and responses of nitrogen-associated functional microorganisms and genes environmental changes, offering theoretical insights and practical guidance for sustainable ecosystem management. © 2025 The Authors.
