Classifying Galaxy Morphologies with Few-shot Learning

The taxonomy of galaxy morphology is critical in astrophysics as the morphological properties are powerful tracers of galaxy *** the upcoming Large-scale Imaging Surveys,billions of galaxy images challenge astronomers to accomplish the classification task by applying traditional methods or human ***,machine learning,in particular supervised deep learning,has been widely employed to classify galaxy morphologies recently due to its exceptional automation,efficiency,and ***,supervised deep learning requires extensive training sets,which causes considerable workloads;also,the results are strongly dependent on the characteristics of training sets,which leads to biased outcomes *** this study,we attempt Few-shot Learning to bypass the two *** research adopts the data set from the Galaxy Zoo Challenge Project on Kaggle,and we divide it into five categories according to the corresponding truth *** classifying the above data set utilizing few-shot learning based on Siamese Networks and supervised deep learning based on AlexNet,VGG_16,and ResNet_50 trained with different volumes of training sets separately,we find that few-shot learning achieves the highest accuracy in most cases,and the most significant improvement is 21%compared to AlexNet when the training sets contain 1000 *** addition,to guarantee the accuracy is no less than 90%,few-shot learning needs~6300 images for training,while ResNet_50 requires~13,000 *** the advantages stated above,foreseeably,few-shot learning is suitable for the taxonomy of galaxy morphology and even for identifying rare astrophysical objects,despite limited training sets consisting of observational data only.

Background: There is a shortage of rehabilitation doctors and treatment equipment for patients with lumbar spondylosis. Therefore, a waist massage instrument (WMI) is designed to help patients alle-viate lumbar pain. Objective: The objective of this study is to design a new WMI with the advantages of simple structure, lightweight, and function of effective force control, and to verify its function of palmar push, palmar press, and palmar vibration based on the on-off control, PID control, and fuzzy-PID control. Methods: Firstly, the movement characteristics of the Chinese massage manipulation are analyzed to clarify the design principle of the massage instrument. Then, a new WMI composed of massage head, vibration exciter, and actuator is designed to simulate the three massage manipulations. Next, the electric control system and control methods of on-off, PID, and fuzzy-PID controllers are introduced to realize the force control of WMI. Finally, the force control experiments of WMI are carried out to verify the function of the palmar press, palmar push, and palmar vibration based on the on-off control, PID control, and fuzzy-PID control, respectively. Results: The experimental results indicate that the proposed WMI can implement the massage manipulations of palmar push, palmar press, and palmar vibration well, and has good force control ability after using fuzzy-PID control. Conclusion: The newly designed WMI is effective in providing palmar push, palmar press, and palmar vibration massage manipulations for patients with lumbar spondylosis, and the fuzzy-PID controller im-proves the force control ability of the instrument. The WMI has the potential to be used as an effective treatment for lumbar pain. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

GBSVM: Granular-ball Support Vector Machine

GBSVM (Granular-ball Support Vector Machine) is a significant attempt to construct a classifier using the coarse-to-fine granularity of a granular-ball as input, rather than a single data point. It is the first classifier whose input contains no points. However, the existing model has some errors, and its dual model has not been derived. As a result, the current algorithm cannot be implemented or applied. To address these problems, this paper has fixed the errors of the original model of the existing GBSVM, and derived its dual model. Furthermore, a particle swarm optimization algorithm is designed to solve the dual model. The sequential minimal optimization algorithm is also carefully designed to solve the dual model. The solution is faster and more stable than the particle swarm optimization based version. The experimental results on the UCI benchmark datasets demonstrate that GBSVM has good robustness and efficiency. A robust three-way classifier with shadowed granular-balls based on justifiable granularity

The granular-ball (GB)-based classifier introduced by Xia, exhibits adaptability in creating coarse-grained information granules for input, thereby enhancing its generality and flexibility. Nevertheless, the current GB-based classifiers rigidly assign a specific class label to each data instance and lacks of the necessary strategies to address uncertain instances. These far-fetched certain classification approachs toward uncertain instances may suffer considerable risks. To solve this problem, we construct a robust three-way classifier with shadowed GBs for uncertain data. Firstly, combine with information entropy, we propose an enhanced GB generation method with the principle of justifiable granularity. Subsequently, based on minimum uncertainty, a shadowed mapping is utilized to partition a GB into Core region, Important region and Unessential region. Based on the constructed shadowed GBs, we establish a three-way classifier to categorize data instances into certain classes and uncertain case. Finally, extensive comparative experiments are conducted with 2 three-way classifiers, 3 state-of-the-art GB-based classifiers, and 3 classical machine learning classifiers on 12 public benchmark datasets. The results show that our model demonstrates robustness in managing uncertain data and effectively mitigates classification risks. The connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are a key component of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) where vehicles communicate with each other to exchange sensing data from on-board sensors (e.g., high-definition cameras and lidar). For the sake of the category and location privacy leakage of sensing images shared by CAVs and computational inefficiency of privacy-preserving object detection framework in edge computing environment, we propose a lightweight and privacy-preserving detection framework (PPDF) to support secure extraction, classification and detection of image features, and achieve the goal of data transmission and computing security under the collaborative detection process of edge nodes. Particularly, we design a secure clustering prediction protocol of object anchors, a secure object classification and regression protocol, secure object upsampling and secure feature fusion protocols. Finally, PPDF based on edge-cooperation was constructed and two non-collusive edge servers were used to perform PPDF. Theoretical analysis of correctness, security and complexity indicate that PPDF can not only realize correctness of object detection, but also let category and location privacy of images are protected effectively and have excellent accuracy. Actual performance evaluation shows that PPDF can achieve the same detection accuracy as original YOLOv3-SPP model. At the same time, compared with homomorphic encryption and multi-round iterative calculation schemes, PPDF has obvious advantages in terms of computational cost and communication overhead. © 2022 IEEE.

Learning concept prerequisite relations helps better master and build a logically coherent knowledge structure. Many studies use graph neural networks to create heterogeneous knowledge networks that enhance concept representations. However, different types of relations in these networks can influence each other. Existing research often focuses solely on concept relations, neglecting other types of knowledge connections. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel concept prerequisite relation learning model, named the Global Knowledge Relation Optimization Model(GKROM). Specifically, we capture the impact of different knowledge relation types on document and concept semantic representations separately, integrating the document and concept semantic representations. Then, we introduce multi-objective learning to optimize the knowledge relation network from a global perspective. Through the above optimization, GKROM learns richer semantic representations for concepts and documents, improving the accuracy of concept prerequisite relation learning. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our GKROM, achieving state-of-the-art performance in concept prerequisite relation learning. Disentangling Heterogeneous Knowledge Concept Embedding for Cognitive Diagnosis on Untested Knowledge

Cognitive diagnosis is a fundamental and critical task in learning assessment, which aims to infer students’ proficiency on knowledge concepts from their response logs. Current works assume each knowledge concept will certainly be tested and covered by multiple exercises. However, whether online or offline courses, it’s hardly feasible to completely cover all knowledge concepts in several exercises. Restricted tests lead to undiscovered knowledge deficits, especially untested knowledge concepts(UKCs). In this paper, we propose a novel framework for Cognitive Diagnosis called Disentangling Heterogeneous Knowledge Cognitive Diagnosis(DisKCD) on untested knowledge. Specifically, we leverage course grades, exercise questions, and learning resources to learn the potential representations of students, exercises, and knowledge concepts. In particular, knowledge concepts are disentangled into tested and untested based on the limiting actual exercises. We construct a heterogeneous relation graph network via students, exercises, tested knowledge concepts(TKCs), and UKCs. Then, through a hierarchical heterogeneous message-passing mechanism, the fine-grained relations are incorporated into the embeddings of the entities. Finally, the embeddings will be applied to multiple existing cognitive diagnosis models to infer students’ proficiency on UKCs. Experimental results on real-world datasets show that the proposed model can effectively improve the performance of the task of diagnosing students’ proficiency on UKCs. Exploring the Robustness: Hierarchical Federated Learning Framework for Object Detection of UAV Cluster

The deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) cluster is an available solution for object detection missions. In the harsh environment, UAV cluster could suffer from some significant threats (e.g., forest fire hazards, electromagnetic interference, and ground-to-air attacks), which could lead to the destruction of UAVs and loss of data. To this end, we propose a Hierarchical Federated Learning Framework for Object Detection (HFL-OD) to enhance the robustness of UAV cluster conducting object detection missions. In HFL-OD, UAVs are grouped through a Three-Dimensional (3D) graph coloring method, and an intragroup backup mechanism is provided to prevent the data loss caused by the destruction of UAVs. Besides, a dynamic server selection mechanism deals with the potential destruction of servers (cluster server and group servers) by adaptively reassigning the server roles. To further improve the robustness and mission efficiency of UAV cluster, a twotier federated learning framework is introduced to make a proper trade-off between object detection accuracy and communication/computational overhead. This framework is built on the concept of hierarchical federated learning by implementing both intragroup parameter aggregation and global parameter aggregation. Extensive simulations and comparisons demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed HFL-OD, i.e., the robustness of UAV cluster conducting object detection missions can be significantly improved, and the communication/computational overhead is effectively reduced. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

As the applications and services within vehicular networking systems become increasingly diverse, vehicles with limited computing resources face challenges in handling these computationally intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. In this paper, we propose an improved Task Offloading Scheduling Strategy based on a Double Deep Q-Network (TOSDDQN) for a dynamic multi-vehicle, multi-edge unit task offloading environment in vehicular networking. This strategy designs communication models and computational models aimed at minimizing the total system overhead in processing tasks. To further protect the privacy of vehicle users, a Distributed Training Algorithm based on Federated Learning (DTAFL) is proposed. Comparative experimental results indicate that, compared to three other task offloading schemes, our approach reduces the average system overhead in processing tasks by 11%–36%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
