Face recognition is a popular and well-studied area with wide applications in our society. However, racial bias had been proven to be inherent in most State Of The Art (SOTA) face recognition systems. Many investigative studies on face recognition algorithms have reported higher false positive rates of African subjects cohorts than the other cohorts. Lack of large-scale African face image databases in public domain is one of the main restrictions in studying the racial bias problem of face recognition. To this end, we collect a face image database namely CASIA-Face-Africa which contains 38,546 images of 1,183 African subjects. Multi-spectral cameras are utilized to capture the face images under various illumination settings. Demographic attributes and facial expressions of the subjects are also carefully recorded. For landmark detection, each face image in the database is manually labeled with 68 facial keypoints. A group of evaluation protocols are constructed according to different applications, tasks, partitions and scenarios. The performances of SOTA face recognition algorithms without retraining are reported as baselines. The proposed database along with its face landmark annotations, evaluation protocols and preliminary results form a good benchmark to study the essential aspects of face biometrics for African subjects, especially face image preprocessing, face feature analysis and matching, facial expression recognition, sex/age estimation, ethnic classification, face image generation, etc. The database can be downloaded from our website* Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Debugging is a well-known time-consuming task, and knowing how long it would take to resolve bugs is of great importance for allocating the limited resources in a software development team. However, it is challenging to predict bug fixing time since fixing bugs is subject to a plethora of uncertain factors such as types of bugs, program complexity and developers' abilities. Existing work mainly focuses on developers' activities in a bug lifecycle and ignores other important factors. In light of the limitations of existing work, we propose a novel approach to predicting the bug fixing time by incorporating a comprehensive set of relevant features. Specifically, we consider four types of features including developers' activities, developers' sentiments, semantics of bugs, and efforts caused by understanding and analyzing source code, and design particular neural networks to take advantage of these features and make them work efficiently. Experimental results on four real application datasets demonstrate that on the one hand, our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art by over 5% in accuracy and 7.3% in F1-score on average; on the other hand, each type of the features considered in our approach plays an important part in the prediction.

Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Graph Learning for Hybrid Beamforming in mmWave Systems

Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) is a cost-efficient technique to achieve high data rates in millimeterwave (mmWave) communication systems. This paper applies the emerging graph neural networks (GNNs) to HBF by leveraging the topological information in wireless networks for better adaptation to dynamic environments. To address the issue of limited feature extraction capability of the existing single-type GNNs, such as node-GNN or edge-GNN, we model the mmWave communication systems as both homogeneous and heterogeneous graphs, and separate the HBF design into node- and edge-level subtasks. Then, the two graphs are presented by two novel models based on homogeneous graph attention network (GAT) and heterogeneous GAT (HGAT), respectively, and mapped to the desired power allocation, radio frequency precoder and baseband precoder. Both the proposed GAT and HGAT are generalizable in the user variation scenarios, while the HGAT is also generalizable in antenna variation scenarios through the incorporation of a complex embedding layer. Furthermore, we introduce a constraint adaptive layer in the GAT and HGAT to ensure feasible outputs. Extensive numerical results based on the public dataset DeepMIMO are provided to evaluate the GAT and HGAT. The proposed approaches generally outperform existing baselines in terms of adaptability to system settings and generalizability to (unseen) problem parameters/sizes, while the HGAT can even achieve faster and better inference than traditional optimization approaches. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Generating 3D fish motion skeleton via iterative optimization method and FishSkeletonNet

The fish motion skeleton serves as the foundation for 3D fish motion modeling, enabling the manipulation of fish posture deformations and movements, while also providing a robust framework for analyzing fish behavior to assess their health status and overall performance. However, the joints within the fish motion skeleton, responsible for driving the fish’s movements, are not always stable, which undergo changes as the fish grows. The unstable topology of the skeleton poses a challenge when attempting to simulate a lifelike fish skeleton. In this paper, we present a novel method for generating a 3D fish skeleton based on fish posture data. Our approach establishes an initial motion skeleton including the spine and fins. We then determine its parameters, encompassing joint positions and the number of joints, through iterative optimization, employing collected data from fish with various shapes and five common postures as constraints. Furthermore, the skeletons generated through this optimization process are utilized as sample data for training the FishSkeletonNet network, a framework introduced in this paper for predicting fish motion skeletons of input 3D fish bodies. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we introduce a new dataset of grass carp postures, on which we carry out experiments and conduct both quantitative and qualitative evaluations. The experiments illustrate that our method generates fish motion skeletons that closely emulate the actual motion skeleton structure of fish, demonstrating a higher level of biological plausibility compared to existing methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Dynamic networks vary over time, making it vital to capture networks temporal patterns for predicting missing links with high accuracy. A biased non-negative latent factorization of tensors (BNLFT) model is very effective in extracting such patterns from dynamic data. However, a BNLFT model only integrates single bias, which cannot adequately represents the volatility of the dynamic data. To address this issue, this paper presents a Diverse Biases Non-negative Latent Factorization of Tensors (DBNT) model for accurate prediction of missing links in dynamic networks. Meanwhile, for further prediction accuracy improvement, the preprocessing bias is integrated into the DBNT model. Empirical studies on two dynamic networks datasets from real applications show that compared with state of the art predictors, a DBNT model achieves higher prediction accuracy. © 2020 IEEE.

The fifth generation(5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability,and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation(6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-airground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6GHz, millimeter wave(mmWave), terahertz(THz),and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence(AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. The scarcity of high-quality electrocardiogram (ECG) data, driven by privacy concerns and limited medical resources, creates a pressing need for effective ECG signal generation. Existing approaches for generating ECG signals typically rely on small training datasets, lack comprehensive evaluation frameworks, and overlook potential applications beyond data augmentation. To address these challenges, we propose DiffuSETS, a framework capable of generating ECG signals with high semantic alignment and fidelity. DiffuSETS accepts various modalities of clinical text reports and patient-specific information as inputs, enabling the creation of clinically meaningful ECG signals. Additionally, we introduce a comprehensive benchmarking methodology to assess the effectiveness of ECG generative models. Our model achieves excellent results in tests, proving its superiority in the task of ECG generation. Furthermore, we showcase its potential to mitigate data scarcity while exploring applications in cardiology education and medical knowledge discovery.

Failure to recognize samples from the classes unseen during training is a major limitation of artificial intelligence in the real-world implementation for recognition and classification of retinal anomalies. We established an uncertainty-inspired open-set (UIOS) model, which was trained with fundus images of 9 retinal conditions. Besides assessing the probability of each category, UIOS also calculated an uncertainty score to express its confidence. Our UIOS model with thresholding strategy achieved an F1 score of 99.55%, 97.01% and 91.91% for the internal testing set, external target categories (TC)-JSIEC dataset and TC-unseen testing set, respectively, compared to the F1 score of 92.20%, 80.69% and 64.74% by the standard AI model. Furthermore, UIOS correctly predicted high uncertainty scores, which would prompt the need for a manual check in the datasets of non-target categories retinal diseases, low-quality fundus images, and non-fundus images. Hadoop application will produce lots of intermediate results in the map/reduce process that requires disk I/O and network transmission. By compressing the large-scale data of intermediate result, it will greatly improve disk access efficiently and reduce program run time. Hardware-accelerated solutions have become more desirable. This paper design a multi-FPGA compression accelerator on the Hadoop platform, and the system performance analysis compared with a software-only solution that mainly uses CPU to processing. The testing programs are zpipe, TestDFSIO and Terasort. In contrast with the software-only solution. The max speedup of zpipe is 6.55X (single FPGA) and 10.24X (dual FPGA), the max speedup of TestDFSIO is 6.28X (single FPGA) and 6.28X (dual FPGA), and the max speedup of Terasort application is up to 3.25X(single FPGA) and 3.35X(dual FPGA). © 2019 IEEE.
