Tough elastomers and gels have garnered broad research interest due to their wide-ranging potential ***,during the loading and unloading cycles,a clear stress softening behavior can be observed in many material systems,which is also named as the Mullins *** this work,we aim to provide a complete review of the Mullins effect in soft yet tough materials,specifically focusing on nanocomposite gels,double-network hydrogels,and multi-network *** first revisit the experimental observations for these soft *** then discuss the recent developments of constitutive models,emphasizing novel developments in the damage mechanisms or network *** phenomenological models will also be briefly *** attention is then placed on the anisotropic and multiaxial modeling *** is demonstrated that most of the existing models fail to accurately predict the multiaxial data,posing a significant challenge for developing future anisotropic models tailored for tough gels and elastomers.

Study on the influence of retroreflective materials on the“secondary reflection”on the room above the horizontal sunshade

Existing studies on horizontal sunshade systems mainly focus on the influence of the sunshade on the room under or inside the sunshade ***,the top surface of horizontal sunshade,especially those with mirror surface or made of metal,reflects solar radiation into the indoor and surroundings,resulting in“secondary reflection”.This paper mainly focuses on the influence of secondary reflection on the room above the sunshade,using DesignBuilder software to conduct numerical simulation analysis and building architectural model for field *** from simulation and field measurement both prove that mirror materials increase secondary reflection reflected into the ***,results from experiments show that retroreflective materials decrease secondary reflection reflected into the *** low latitude,the application of retroreflective materials on the top surface of horizontal sunshade effectively reduces the adverse influence of secondary reflection on the room above the sunshade.

An explicit form of the elastic strain-energy function for direction-dependent large elastic strain behaviors of soft fiber-reinforced composites is first presented based upon a decoupled approach for simulating complex nonlinear coupling *** this form,the exact closed-form solutions are then obtained for the uniaxial tension responses in the fiber and cross-fiber *** such exact solutions,the issue of simultaneously simulating strongly coupling nonlinear responses in the fiber and cross-fiber directions may be reduced to the issue of separately treating each decoupled uniaxial stress-strain response,thus bypassing usual complexities and uncertainties involved in identifying a large number of strongly coupled adjustable *** numerical examples given are in good agreement with the experimental data for large strain responses.

Interaction and characteristics of furfural residues and polyvinyl chloride in fast co-pyrolysis

This study investigated the interaction between the furfural residue and polyvinyl chloride co-pyrolysis using an infrared heating *** analytical techniques including production distribution analysis,thermal behavior,pyrolysis kinetic,simulated distillation and gas chromatography-mass spectrography(GCMS),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized to elucidate the pyrolysis characterization and reaction mechanism during the ***,the yield of co-pyrolysis oil increased from 35.12%at 5℃·s^(–1)to 37.70%at 10℃·s^(-1),but then decreased to 32.07%at 20℃·s^(-1).Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters suggested non-spontaneous and endothermic *** analysis revealed that aromatic hydrocarbons,especially mono-and bi-cyclic ones,are the predominant compounds in the oil due to the presence of H radicals in polyvinyl chloride,suggesting an enhancement in oil ***,the fixed chlorine content increased to 65.11%after co-pyrolysis due to the interaction between inorganic salts in furfural residues and chlorine from polyvinyl chloride.

The mechanical properties of pipe joints are of vital importance to the performance of pipe structures. In order to further understand the whole failure process of adhesive pipe joints to maintain their good condition subjected to tensile loads, the analytical solutions are deduced in this paper, along with the parameter analysis by numerical simulations. A concise rigid-softening cohesive model was adopted to characterize the deformation of the interface. The whole failure process divided into different sections was discussed in detail and closed-form solutions of slip and shear stress were obtained. The finite element method (FEM) model for the bonded pipe joints under certain situations was established using commercial software ABAQUS, and the analytical and FEM results were accordant. The mechanism of shear stress transfer, the growth regulation of interface cracks and the mechanical performance of the joints under tensile loads were quantitatively obtained. These outcomes may help for the design, application and reinforcement of bonded pipe joints and can be compatible to other orthotropic materials. © 2023 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Fluid evolution and fragmentation characteristics under high pressure water jet impact on thermal rock

In the application of high-pressure water jet assisted breaking of deep underground rock engineering,the influence mechanism of rock temperature on the rock fragmentation process under jet action is still ***,the fluid evolution characteristics and rock fracture behavior during jet impingement were *** results indicate that the breaking process of high-temperature rock by jet impact can be divided into four stages:initial fluid-solid contact stage,intense thermal exchange stage,perforation and fracturing stage,and crack propagation and penetration *** the increase of rock temperature,the jet reflection angles and the time required for complete cooling of the impact surface significantly decrease,while the number of cracks and crack propagation rate significantly increase,and the rock breaking critical time is shortened by up to 34.5%.Based on numerical simulation results,it was found that the center temperature of granite at 400℃ rapidly decreased from 390 to 260℃ within 0.7 s under jet *** addition,a critical temperature and critical heat flux prediction model considering the staged breaking of hot rocks was *** findings provide valuable insights to guide the water jet technology assisted deep ground hot rock excavation project.

Experimental and Numerical Studies on Sea Sand Concrete Filled Stainless Steel Tube with Inner FRP Tube Subjected to Axial Compression

Since fibre-reinforced polymer(FRP) and stainless steel(SS) offer advantages of corrosion resistance and hybrid confinement, this study proposed a new type of composite column: sea sand concrete(SSC)-filled SS tubular columns with an inner FRP tube(CFSTFs) to help exploit abundant ocean resources in marine engineering. To study compressive behaviours of these novel members, eight CFSTFs and two SSC-filled SS tubular columns(CFSTs)were tested under axial compression. Their axial load-displacement curves, axial load-strain curves in SS or FRP tubes were obtained, and influences of key test parameters(the existence of glass FRP(GFRP) tubes, steel tube shapes, and GFRP tube thicknesses and diameters) were discussed. Further, specimen failure mechanism was analyzed employing the finite element method using ABAQUS software. Test results confirmed the excellent ductility and load-bearing capacity of CFSTFs. The existence of GFRP tubes inside can postpone SS tube buckling, and the content of inner FRP tubes, particularly increasing diameters, was found to improve compressive behaviours. GFRP contents helped develop the second elastic-plastic stage of the load-displacement curves. Furthermore, the bearing capacity of CFSTFs with a circular cross-section was approximately 26% higher than that with a square cross-section, and this difference narrowed with the increase in GFRP ratios.

Seismic fragility analysis of three-tower cable-stayed bridges with three different structural systems,including rigid system(RS),floating system(FS),and passive energy dissipation system(PEDS),is conducted to study the effects of connection configurations on seismic responses and *** element models of bridges are established using OpenSees.A new ground motion screening method based on the statistical characteristic of the predominant period is proposed to avoid irregular behavior in the selection process of ground motions,and incremental dynamic analysis(IDA)is performed to develop components and systems fragility *** effects of damper failure on calculated results for PEDS are examined in terms of seismic response and fragility *** results show that the bridge tower is the most affected component by different structural *** RS,the fragility of the middle tower is significantly higher than other components,and the bridge failure starts from the middle tower,exhibiting a characteristic of local *** FS and PEDS,the fragility of the edge tower is higher than the middle *** system fragility of RS is higher than FS and *** the failure of dampers into account is necessary to obtain reliable seismic capacity of cable-stayed bridges.

With the increasingly widespread application of rubber in many fields,there is a growing demand for quantitative characterization of temperature-dependent mechanical properties in high-temperature service *** critical tearing energy is an important criterion for determining whether rubber materials will experience tearing instability,while tear strength is a key parameter for rubber materials to resist *** is necessary to quantitatively characterize their evolution with *** theoretical research mainly relies on fitting a large amount of experimental data,which is not convenient for engineering ***,in this work,a temperature-dependent critical tearing energy model is firstly developed based on the force-heat equivalence energy density *** model considers the equivalent relationship between the critical tearing energy required for crack instability propagation and the thermal energy stored in the rubber *** is demonstrated that our model has higher prediction accuracy when compared to other ***,combining with the Griffith fracture theory,temperature-dependent tear strength models applicable to three different crack modes are separately *** models are validated using experimental data for Mode I opening cracks and ModeⅢtearing cracks,and good consistency is ***,a quantitative analysis of the influence of elastic modulus on tear strength at different temperatures is *** work provides a reliable way for predicting temperature-dependent tearing instability behavior and offers beneficial suggestions for improving the tear strength of rubber materials at different temperatures.
