In this paper, we aim to identify the regions involved in epilepsy from intracerebral EEG (iEEG) of patients suffering from focal epilepsy. Identification of regions involved in epilepsy is important for presurgery evaluations. The proposed method is based on common spatial pattern (CSP) using two types of time intervals: 1) periods including inter-ictal epileptiform discharges (IED), and 2) periods excluding IEDs or abnormal physiological signals. The method is applied on the iEEG recordings of one seizure-free patient after resective surgery. The results are compared with seizure onset zones visually inspected by the epileptologist. The congruent IED regions with visually detected seizure onset zones are encouraging results. Moreover, the application of CSP method for the identification of IED regions seems interesting as this method is fast and simple.

Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conclusion finally.

The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques.

A novel image retrieval approach based on color features and anisotropic directional information is proposed for content based image retrieval systems （CBIR）. The color feature is described by the color histogram （CH）, which is translation and rotation invariant. However, the CH does not contain spatial information which is very important for the image retrieval. To overcome this shortcoming, the subband energy of the lifting directionlet transform （L-DT） is proposed to describe the directional information, in which L-DT is characterized by multi-direction and anisotropic basis functions compared with the wavelet transform. A global similarity measure is designed to implement the fusion of both color feature and anisotropic directionality for the retrieval process. The retrieval experiments using a set of COREL images demonstrate that the higher query precision and better visual effect can be achieved.

This paper presents a generic video vehicle detection approach through multiple background-based features and statistical learning. The main idea is to configure several virtual loops (as detection zones) on the image, assuming moving vehicles may cause pixel intensities and local texture to change, and then by identifying such pixel changes to detect vehicles. In this research, multiple pattern classifiers including LDA + Adaboost, SVM, and Random Forests are used to detect vehicles that are passing through virtual loops. We extract fourteen pattern features (related to foreground area, texture change, and luminance and contrast in the local virtual loop zone and the global image) to train pattern classifiers and then detect vehicles. As experimental results illustrate, the proposed approach is quite robust to detect vehicles under complex dynamic environments, and thus is able to improve the accuracy of traffic data collection in all weather for long term.

The Non-Local Means (NLM) filter uses the redundancy of information in the image to remove noise, this scheme gives some of the best results among other powerful methods such as wavelet based approaches or diffusion techniques. Though simple to implement and efficient in practice, the classical NLM suffers from ringing artifacts around edges when using square patches, due to an abrupt lack of redundancy of the image. This paper presents an extended NLM based on Multi-Shape Patches Aggregation (NLM-MSPA) to overcome this problem, and uses it to remove medical ultrasound images corrupted by multiplicative speckle noise. We have incorporated a preprocessing step to make the speckle noise much closer to the real additive white Gaussian noise, hence more amenable to a denoising algorithm such as NLM-MSPA. Results on real images and artificially speckled images show that the proposed scheme outperforms several classical methods chosen for comparison in its ability to reduce speckle and preserve edge details.

An automatic recognition method for steel billet images with different orientations is proposed in this paper. A crucial part of this method is to segment the image firstly, and then use the projection features of the segmented image to distinguish the different orientations of the steel billet in production line. After the string is segmented into individual characters, the segmented characters can be recognized by template matching. Experiments on steel billet image recognition demonstrate that the proposed method can distinguish the steel billet image orientation and recognize the characters automatically, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a method to predict the outcome of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The method uses diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) and spatial information to predict the treatment response of each tumor voxel. These DAIs are Fractional Anisotropy, Mean Diffusivity, Relative Anisotropy, and Volume Ratio, extracted from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data before treatment. The spatial information is considered as the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center, extracted from pre-treatment post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance images (pc-T1-MRI). DAIs and spatial information of each tumor voxel are considered as feature vector. DTI and pc-T1-MRI are gathered before and after the treatment of seven GBM patients. First, DAIs of all brain voxels and the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center are calculated. Second, the method registers pre-treatment DAI maps and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, the tumor is segmented using thresholding technique from pc-T1-MRI. Then, Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI are compared to label the feature vectors. Three classifiers were evaluated, including Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Artificial Neural Network. Classification results show a preference for K-Nearest Neighbor based on well-established performance measures.

Recent research has demonstrated that the ultra-scale computation by self-assembly DNA tiles can be implemented in the laboratory. One of the significant applications is the DNA-based cryptography systems. In this paper, we detail procedures for the DNA-based One-Time-Pads (OTP) cryptography, which is in principle unbreakable. In order to implement the whole encrypting and decrypting processes, we propose four tile systems: encrypting system, ciphertext extracting system, key extracting system and decrypting system. All the tile systems use θ(1) input tiles and compute in θ(n) steps according to the length of the input massage. The method of implementing the DNA OTP encryption extends the self-assemble tile models and achieves the real randomness in the DNA OTP. Copyright © 2010 American Scientific Publishers.
