Compared with traditional natural images, remote sensing images (RSIs) typically have high resolution. The objects in the images are densely distributed, with heterogeneous orientation and large scale variation, even among objects of the same class. In recent years, object detection algorithms have made great strides in general images, but they are still difficult to meet the challenges that exist in RSIs. Therefore, we propose a foreground feature embedding network (FFE-Net) for object detection in RSIs. To better grasp the object features in RSIs, we design a foreground feature embedding module (FFEM) to learn the foreground features of the object. This is achieved by introducing an additional semantic segmentation branch and embedding the features in the classification and regression branches. Simultaneously, we propose a modified Gaussian function with focal loss (MGFFL) as a way to eliminate the extra background noise from soft labels, making the learned foreground features more robust. Our experimental results on two publicly available remote sensing image datasets, DOTA-v1.0 and HRSC2016, validate the effectiveness of FFE-Net. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Hierarchical Spatio-temporal Decoupling for Text-to-Video Generation

Despite diffusion models having shown powerful abilities to generate photorealistic images, generating videos that are realistic and diverse still remains in its infancy. One of the key reasons is that current methods intertwine spatial content and temporal dynamics together, leading to a notably increased complexity of text-to-video generation (T2V). In this work, we propose HiGen, a diffusion modelbased method that improves performance by decoupling the spatial and temporal factors of videos from two perspectives, i.e., structure level and content level. At the structure level, we decompose the T2V task into two steps, including spatial reasoning and temporal reasoning, using a unified denoiser. Specifically, we generate spatially coherent priors using text during spatial reasoning and then generate temporally coherent motions from these priors during temporal reasoning. At the content level, we extract two subtle cues from the content of the input video that can express motion and appearance changes, respectively. These two cues then guide the model's training for generating videos, enabling flexible content variations and enhancing temporal stability. Through the decoupled paradigm, HiGen can effectively reduce the complexity of this task and generate realistic videos with semantics accuracy and motion stability. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of HiGen over the state-of-the-art T2V methods. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

image matching technology is crucial in computer vision applications. However, the traditional SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm often faces challenges under adverse conditions, such as a high number of mismatched points and few accurately matched points. Additionally, in practical scenarios, environmental factors like lighting changes and image blurring further reduce image similarity. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved SIFT-based image matching algorithm to address these challenges. First, SIFT is used to extract image features, and a bidirectional FLANN (Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbors) matching strategy is employed to initially filter out incorrect features. Then, the RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) algorithm is used to screen out unreliable matching point pairs. Finally, the matching accuracy is evaluated based on the remaining pure matching point pairs. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to the traditional SIFT algorithm, this improved algorithm achieves higher matching accuracy and robustness under adverse conditions, exhibiting superior performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Bokeh effect transformation is a novel task in computer vision and computational photography. It aims to convert bokeh effects from one camera lens to another. To this end, we introduce a new concept of blur ratio, which represents the ratio of the blur amount of a target image to that of a source image, and propose a novel framework SBTNet based on this concept. For cat-eye simulation and lens type transformation, a two-channel coordinate map and a two-channel one-hot map are added as extra inputs. The core of the framework is a sequence of parallel FeaNets, along with a feature selection and integration strategy, which aims to transform the blur amount with arbitrary blur ratio. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through extensive experiments, and our solution has achieved the top LPIPS metric in NTIRE 2023 Bokeh Effect Transformation Challenge.

Entity-based ranking is a popular research area in document ranking as knowledge graphs can introduce additional evidence for ranking systems. In most entity-based ranking framework, the original query is transformed into a set of entities and candidate documents are ranked according to their relevance to the entity set. However, mistakes can easily occur during the transformation process, which introduce noise to the ranking system. This paper represents an expansion-based ranking framework, which expand the original query with high-quality candidate entities to mitigate the impact of transformation mistakes and enrich the semantics of the query in the meanwhile. Compared with existing query expansion methods, our expansion method is lightweight as it reduces much computational burden and requests little extra information. However, the core concerns of the users might be covered up after query expansion. To alleviate this dilemma, a core concern capturing method is pro-posed, wherein the attention weight of each inter-entity relation is measured to capture the core entity pairs in the expanded query. Experiments on the S2-CS dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our lightweight query expansion method and the superiority of our core concern capturing method. Compared with a classical retrieval model, our method provides 11% improvements in terms of NDCG@15. © 2022 IEEE.

Quantum gyroscopes based on double-mode surface-acoustic-wave cavities

Recent progress shows that a surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) cavity can not only induce quantum acoustic dynamics, but can also form optomechanical-like systems. Its operating frequencies in the microwave band make it resistant to the thermal noise of surrounding environments, while its radiation-pressure couplings make it susceptible to weak forces. Based on these advantages, we propose a gyroscope comprising coupled microwave-SAW cavities. In this paper we systematically consider the range, signal-to-noise ratio, and sensitivity, which are the three most important indices to gyroscopes, but only partially considered in existing works. Additionally, we establish the fundamental limits of sensitivity when the quantum input is in the vacuum state and the squeezed vacuum state. We find that squeezing improves sensitivity and can surpass the standard quantum limit. However, this improvement can only reach up to 2/2 even as the squeezed parameter approaches infinity, which is rarely noted in recent works. Finally, we also offer analytical constraints for cooperativity and squeezed parameters. These constraints can be utilized to design gyroscopes based on coupled cavities in experiments.

P systems are distributed and parallel computing models inspired from living cells. In this work, a variant of spiking neural P systems, cortical neural P systems, are proposed in the frame work of P systems combining the topology structure of basic P system and information processing style in spiking neurons. The computational power of cortical neural P systems is investigated. Solving nonlinear equation systems (NESs) is a challenging problems in numerical computation. Two goals should be considered for solving NESs. One is to locate as many roots as possible and the other is to improve the solving precision. In this work, in order to achieve these two goals, a two-phase niching differential evolution (TPNDE) is proposed. The innovation of TPNDE is mainly reflected in the following three aspects. First, a probabilistic mutation mechanism is designed to increase the diversity of the population. Second, a novel reinitialization procedure is proposed to detect converged individuals and explore more new regions that may contain global optima. Third, distribution adjustment local search (DALS) is proposed to deal with the isolated solution and enhance the convergence of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of TPNDE, we test our TPNDE and 5 state-of-the-art algorithms on 20 NESs with diverse features. The experimental results show that the proposed TPNDE algorithm is better than the other methods. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In the process of coal blending and washing in coal preparation plants, there are various raw coals with different quality that changes greatly, which results in poor quality and low profit. To solve these problems, a novel optimization method for raw coal blending based on interval programming is proposed. Interval numbers are introduced to represent the fluctuation range of ash and sulfur content at each density level of raw coals. A predictive model of quantity and quality of dense medium cyclone products is constructed, which uses Hermite interpolation to obtain washability curves of each raw coal and adopts fitting methods to obtain the distribution curve. In order to obtain optimal coal blending schemes, considering operation and maintenance costs of raw coal feeding line, a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is built, whose objective is to maximize profit with the main constraints of clean coal quality and inventory of raw coal. Interval possibility is introduced to transform constraints with interval number and a customized branch and bound algorithm is used to solve it. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method in this paper, experiments are conducted using manufacturing data from a domestic coal preparation plant. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is practical and has better economic performance. © 2023 IEEE.
