Multi-objective optimization problems with many objective functions (≫3) are difficult to solve. This is because the time complexity of optimization algorithms often grows fast with the number of objective functions and the results of many objective optimization algorithms (Pareto front approximation) require large memory and their interpretation can be difficult for the decision maker. It is therefore attractive to reduce complexity of these problems. This can be achieved by decomposing them into a set of independent lower dimensional subproblems, or by aggregating some objective functions into a single objective function. This work introduces a new approach for decomposition and aggregation based on techniques from social network analysis. The key idea is to interpret an objective function as a node (agent) in a social network, and arcs between nodes indicate relationships: Negatively weighted arcs stand for conflicting objectives, zero weighted arcs for independent objectives, and positively weighted arcs for objectives that support each other. Using well-known algorithms BGLL for community detection we show that - given certain preconditions - it is possible to decompose a many objective optimization problem to a set of lower dimensional multi-objective optimization problems. This makes it easier to solve the problem and interpret the resulting trade-off (hyper-)surfaces. In the paper, after introducing the idea of Communtiy Detection for Many-Objective Optimization (CoDeMO), we lay out an interactive workflow and test it on simple, scalable many-objective optimization problems - variants of facility location problems - and thereby provide a prove-of-concept study.

This paper studies how to use two reproduction operators with different characteristics for balancing the convergence and the diversity in MOEA/D. We consider two operators. One is a differential evolution and polynomial mutation, and the other is a neighbor learning and inversion mutation. We show that these two operators have different search abilities. Then we propose a scheme to use these two operators in our recently proposed MOEA/D-GR framework. We test the proposed algorithm on some benchmark problems to demonstrate its effectiveness.

In this paper, Reversible logic circuit synthesis is formulated as a quantum cost-minimization problem with equality constraint. A new reference-point based evolutionary multi-objective method R-EMO-RLC is specially designed to attack the equality constraint. First, the reference point is determined dynamically according the distribution of solutions. Then, a new crowding comparative operator is fabricated to adapt the uncertainty of constraint violation and objective value aroused by variable length encoding. Experimental results show that R-EMO-RLC can increase the feasible ratio and obtain savings in quantum cost for some benchmarks from recent publications comparing with previously known circuits. © 2014 IEEE.

Single image blind deblurring has been intensively studied since Fergus et al.'s variational Bayes method in 2006. It is now commonly believed that the blur-kernel estimation accuracy is highly dependent on the pursed salient edge information from the blurred image, which stimulates numerous ℓ 0 -approximating blind deblurring methods via kinds of techniques and tricks. This paper, however, focuses on the four recent daring attempts which are all based on the simple and direct ℓ 0 -norm. A systematic comparative analysis is made towards those methods, clarifying their similarities and differences, and providing a benchmark evaluation on both the deblurring quality and computational efficiency. Results have demonstrated that the ℓ 0 -norm alone is far enough to achieve top blind deblurring performance. Instead, details are to be paid with fairly more attention as working on the problem formulation as well as the algorithmic deduction. Besides, three possible extensions are analyzed on the most leading bi-ℓ 0 -ℓ 2 -norm regularization-based blind deblurring method.

A cooperative immune coevolutionary algorithm for multi-objective optimization

According to the distribution characteristics of the Pareto set (PS) of multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs), a cooperative coevolutionary model with new problem decomposition method was designed. By introducing the proposed coevolutionary model into artificial immune system, a cooperative immune coevolutionary algorithm for multi-objective optimization (CICAMO) was proposed. In CICAMO, the Tchebycheff decomposition method is employed to divide sub-populations at first, and then linear probabilistic models are built for each sub-population to piecewise approximate the distribution of the whole PS. In antibody reproducing step, two types of approaches based on clonal selection and model sampling are employed. Experimental results indicate that CICAMO can achieve a good performance in terms of both solution quality and convergence rate, especially when solving MOPs with non-linear relationship between decision variables.

In this paper, we propose a novel level set method for segmentation of cardiac left and right ventricles based on the distance regularized level set evolution (DRLSE) framework [7] and the distance regularized two-layer level set (DR2LS) model [17]. First, DRLSE is applied to obtain a preliminary segmentation of left and right ventricles, which is then used to initialize the endocardial contour, which is represented by the zero level contour of the level set function in our method. Then, the epicardial contour is represented by a different level contour of the same level set function. These two level sets are optimized by an energy minimization process to best fit the true endocardium and epicardium. In order to ensure smoothly varying distance between the two level contours, we introduce a distance regularization constraint in the energy function. With the region-scalable fitting (RSF) energy [8] as the data term, our method is able to deal with intensity inhomogeneities in the images, which is a main source of difficulty in image segmentation. Our method has been tested on cardiac MR images with promising results.

Many-objective problem has more than 3 objectives. Because of the extraordinary difficulty of acquiring their Pareto optimal solutions directly, traditional methods will be out of operation for such problems. In recent years, many researchers have turned their attention to the study of this area. They are interested in two areas: acquiring some part of Pareto front which is useful to the researchers (Preferred Solutions) and reducing redundant objectives. In this paper, we combine two dimension reduction methods: the method based on Pareto optimal solution analysis and the method based on correlation analysis, to form a novel algorithm for dimension reduction. Firstly, the Pareto optimal solutions are acquired through NSGA-II. Then the objectives who contribute little to the number of non-dominated solutions are removed. At last, the dimension of objectives is reduced further according to their contribution to the principal component in PCA analysis. In this way, we can acquire the right non-redundant objectives with low time complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce redundant objectives and keep the non-redundant objectives with low time.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid algorithm aimed at optimally synthesizing reversible Toffoli circuits in terms of the quantum cost for 4-bit and 5-bit reversible benchmarks. The hybrid algorithm alternates a variablelength evolutionary process with a heuristic factor subtraction algorithm based on Positive Polarity Reed Muller (PPRM) expansion. Further more, the variable length evolutionary algorithm employs a new constraint solving method, which introduces a trade-off factor to control a pair of contradictions: the decreasing of constraint violation and the increasing of quantum cost. The experimental results show that the hybrid algorithm outperforms existing combinations of a definite synthesis approach and a post-optimization method on some commonly used 4-bit and 5-bit benchmarks in point of quantum cost, and obtain some better results than the best known ones. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Mutual occlusions among targets can cause track loss or target position deviation, because the observation likelihood of an occluded target may vanish even when we have the estimated location of the target. This paper presents a novel probability framework for multitarget tracking with mutual occlusions. The primary contribution of this work is the introduction of a vectorial occlusion variable as part of the solution. The occlusion variable describes occlusion states of the targets. This forms the basis of the proposed probability framework, with the following further contributions: 1) Likelihood: A new observation likelihood model is presented, in which the likelihood of an occluded target is computed by referring to both of the occluded and occluding targets. 2) Priori: Markov random field (MRF) is used to model the occlusion priori such that less likely "circular" or "cascading" types of occlusions have lower priori probabilities. Both the occlusion priori and the motion priori take into consideration the state of occlusion. 3) Optimization: A realtime RJMCMC-based algorithm with a new move type called "occlusion state update" ispresented. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can handle occlusions well, even including long-duration full occlusions, which may cause tracking failures in the traditional methods.

Wavelength dependent loss of splice of single-mode fibers

After reviewing three different definitions of mode field diameter of single-mode fibers, coupled efficiency calculation methods associated with lateral offset, longitude separation and wavelength, the effects produced by them, and the influences of splicing defects were discussed in detail. The regularities of the effects were studied according to the first order derivation of couple efficiency formula, and a simplified formula for couple efficiency calculation was presented under the circumstance of slight misalignment, with respect to wavelength, 2, and in a good agreement with the theoretical model. The simplified formula provides a new but simple approach to evaluate wavelength dependent couple efficiency of single-mode fibers. Theoretical analyses and numerical calculations show that, when those defects exist, the wavelength produces additional effects on the couple loss that growth of wavelength causes an increase on the couple efficiency for the lateral offset or longitude separation whereas lessens the couple efficiency due to angular misalignment or mode fields mismatching, and that the wavelength degrades the couple efficiency distinctly when λ≥2.5 μm whereas it distorts the couple slightly in range of λ≤2λ≤2 μm.
