We present a new distance for the contour-based shapes recognition which we called shape edit distance (SED). Unlike the traditional distance, SED takes into account the spatial deformation of shapes. To compute the shape edit distance, we convert shapes to string sequences so that string matching techniques can be used. We pose the problem of string matching as a maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) alignment of the string sequences for shapes and compute the shape edit distance by finding the sequence of string edit operations which minimizes the cost of the path traversing the edit lattice. Experiments demonstrate the utility of the shape edit distance on a number of image retrieval and clustering problems

Default description logics are extensions of description logics by Reiter's default logic in order to represent and reason about non-monotonic knowledge. A default says that if its prerequisite is provable, and the negation of its justification is not provable, then its consequence is provable. As a method of using defaults in a reverse way, reversing inference rules are introduced to default description logics. For a default, its reversing inference rule says if the negation of the consequence of the default is provable, then the negation of the prerequisite or the negation of the justification of the default is provable. Then a default description theory is extended to an extended default description theory with reversing inference rules and the definition of extensions of the extended default description theory is given. A default description theory can infer statements by using its defaults. However, an extended default description theory can infer statements not only by using its defaults, but by using its reversing inference rules. The relations between default description theories and their extended default description theories are discussed. For a default description theory without extensions, its extended default description theory may have extensions.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image despeckling is an important problem in the SAR applications. A novel despeckling approach using a local contextual hidden Markov model (LCHMM) in the contourlet domain is presented in this paper. The proposed method can not only use the multiresolution and multidirection characteristics of the contourlet transform, but also exploit the local statistics and capture the intrascale dependencies of the contourlet coefficients by using LCHMM. The experiments in despeckling SAR images show that the proposed method in contrary to other methods can obtain a better trade-off between smoothing the homogeneous areas and keeping the edges and can get better visual effect
