Biomedical Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a crucial task in extracting information from biomedical texts. However, the diversity of professional terminology, semantic complexity, and the widespread presence of synonyms pose significant challenges. Traditional methods that rely on sequence labeling training datasets often struggle to handle these complexities. To address this, we introduce a novel framework for BioNER, termed DMNER, which leverages external knowledge and operates in two steps: entity boundary detection and entity category identification through matching. The core of DMNER is its second step, which determines the entity category by retrieving similar entities and their categories from a knowledge dictionary using semantic similarity matching. Our experiments on 10 biomedical datasets demonstrate that DMNER outperforms baselines across these tasks, proving its effectiveness and adaptability. DMNER is versatile and can be applied to various NER tasks, including supervised NER, distantly supervised NER, and NER on multiple datasets with disjoint label sets. DNA methylation can reflect age-related issues in individuals, and age prediction tools developed based on DNA methylation are called Epigenetic clocks. Epigenetic clocks also serve as potent tools for enhancing researchers’ understanding of the aging process and aim to contribute to the advancement of aging research. The current prevailing approach involves creating clocks using Elastic Net regression modeling, wherein high-age-correlation CpG sites were selected as features in advance. However, pre-selecting CpG sites in advance may inadvertently overlook interactions between distant CpG sites. Deep learning has significant advantages in dealing with vast feature sets due to the tremendous opportunities that the development of deep learning presents for research. Deep learning architectures have demonstrated greater efficiency in acquiring and representing large numbers of intricate features compared to traditional machine learning models. In this study, we proposed a deep learning model based on a multiscale convolutional neural network (MSCNN) for pan-tissue age prediction, called MSCAP. First, for the model to efficiently predict datasets from different sequencing platforms, we chose a common intersection of sites from the Illumina 27K and Illumina 450K platforms (25,789 CpG sites), then trained and tested the model on 93 datasets. Different tissues of the human body are used in the datasets for training and testing. And independently tested on 7 independent datasets against an Epigenetic clock developed by Horvath in 2013 with high prediction accuracy. The results showed that MSCAP could effectively extract key features from a vast number of potential features without advanced feature selection. In addition, MSCAP outperformed the Horvath clock on all seven independent test datasets. This research helped boost the development of epigenetic clock methods and reinforced the value of deep learning in computational biology.

A Prompting-based Approach for Adversarial Example Generation and Robustness Enhancement

Recent years have seen the wide application of NLP models in crucial areas such as finance, medical treatment, and news media, raising concerns of the model robustness and vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose a novel prompt-based adversarial attack to compromise NLP models and robustness enhancement technique. We first construct malicious prompts for each instance and generate adversarial examples via mask-and-filling under the effect of a malicious purpose. Our attack technique targets the inherent vulnerabilities of NLP models, allowing us to generate samples even without interacting with the victim NLP model, as long as it is based on pre-trained language models (PLMs). Furthermore, we design a prompt-based adversarial training method to improve the robustness of PLMs. As our training method does not actually generate adversarial samples, it can be applied to large-scale training sets efficiently. The experimental results show that our attack method can achieve a high attack success rate with more diverse, fluent and natural adversarial examples. In addition, our robustness enhancement method can significantly improve the robustness of models to resist adversarial attacks. Our work indicates that prompting paradigm has great potential in probing some fundamental flaws of PLMs and fine-tuning them for downstream tasks. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Hyperspectral Image Fusion via Logarithmic Low-rank Tensor Ring Decomposition

Integrating a low-spatial-resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) with a high-spatial-resolution multispectral image (HR-MSI) is recognized as a valid method for acquiring HR-HSI. Among the current fusion approaches, the tensor ring (TR) decomposition-based method has received growing attention owing to its superior performance on preserving the spatial-spectral correlation. Furthermore, the low-rank property in some TR factors has been exploited via the matrix nuclear norm regularization along mode-2. On the other hand, the tensor nuclear norm (TNN)-based approaches have recently demonstrated to be more efficient on keeping high-dimensional low-rank structures in tensor recovery. Here, we study the low-rankness of TR factors from the TNN perspective and consider the mode-2 logarithmic TNN (LTNN) on each TR factor. A novel fusion model is proposed by incorporating this LTNN regularization and the weighted total variation which is to promote the continuity of HR-HSI in the spatial-spectral domain. Meanwhile, we have devised a highly efficient proximal alternating minimization algorithm to solve the proposed model. The experimental results indicate that our method improves the visual quality and exceeds the existing state-of-the-art fusion approaches with respect to various quantitative metrics. © 2023, CC BY.

In this paper,we investigate the distributed antenna systems(DAS)based on device to device(DASD2D)communications under the imperfect channel state information(CSI).Our aim is to maximize the energy efficiency(EE)of the D2D users equipment(DUE)under the constraints of the maximum transmission power of D2D pairs and the quality of service(QoS)requirements of the cellular user equipment(CUE).The worst-case design is considered so that the QoS of the CUE can be guaranteed for every realization of the CSI error in the ellipsoid *** EE objective function of the optimization problem is non-convex and non-linear,and thus this problem cannot be solved by the traditional optimization *** solve this problem,first we transform it to an EE maximization problem without uncertain parameters by exploiting the Markov and Cauchy-Schwartz *** using the fractional programming theory and difference of convex functions optimization method,the robust EE maximization algorithms based on the hard and soft protection method are developed to maximize the system’s EE performance,***,these two algorithms are designed at the cost of the reduced EE of the ***,in order to further improve the EE performance and make a trade-off between the EE performance and the robustness,the iterative update algorithms for the total power constraint and average interference constraint are developed to maximize the system’s EE performance,*** results demonstrate the effectiveness of the four proposed EE algorithms and illustrate the trade-off between the EE performance and robustness for the iterative update algorithms.

Accelerating evolutionary neural architecture search via multi-fidelity evaluation

Evolutionary neural architecture search (ENAS) has recently received increasing attention by effectively finding high-quality neural architectures, which however consumes high computational cost by training the architecture encoded by each individual for complete epochs in individual evaluation. Numerous ENAS approaches have been developed to reduce the evaluation cost, but it is often difficult for most of these approaches to achieve high evaluation accuracy. To address this issue, in this paper we propose an accelerated ENAS via multifidelity evaluation termed MFENAS, where the individual evaluation cost is significantly reduced by training the architecture encoded by each individual for only a small number of epochs. The balance between evaluation cost and evaluation accuracy is well maintained by suggesting a multi-fidelity evaluation, which identifies the potentially good individuals that cannot survive from previous generations by integrating multiple evaluations under different numbers of training epochs. For high diversity of neural architectures, a population initialization strategy is devised to produce different neural architectures varying from ResNetlike architectures to Inception-like ones. Experimental results on CIFAR-10 show that the architecture obtained by the proposed MFENAS achieves a 2.39% test error rate at the cost of only 0.6 GPU days on one NVIDIA 2080TI GPU, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed MFENAS over state-of-the-art NAS approaches in terms of both computational cost and architecture quality. The architecture obtained by the proposed MFENAS is then transferred to CIFAR-100 and ImageNet, which also exhibits competitive performance to the architectures obtained by existing NAS approaches. Reconstruction of cross-cut shredded text documents (RCCSTD) has important applications for information security and judicial evidence collection. The traditional method of manual construction is a very time-consuming task, so the use of computer-assisted efficient reconstruction is a crucial research topic. Fragment consensus information extraction and fragment pair compatibility measurement are two fundamental processes in RCCSTD. Due to the limitations of the existing classical methods of these two steps, only documents with specific structures or characteristics can be spliced, and pairing error is larger when the cutting is more fine-grained. In order to reconstruct the fragments more effectively, this paper improves the extraction method for consensus information and constructs a new global pairwise compatibility measurement model based on the extreme learning machine algorithm. The purpose of the algorithm’s design is to exploit all available information and computationally suggest matches to increase the algorithm’s ability to discriminate between data in various complex situations, then find the best neighbor of each fragment for splicing according to pairwise compatibility. The overall performance of our approach in several practical experiments is illustrated. The results indicate that the matching accuracy of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the previously published classical algorithms and still ensures a higher matching accuracy in the noisy datasets, which can provide a feasible method for RCCSTD intelligent systems in real scenarios. © 2022, CC BY.

Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection aims to identify the test examples that do not belong to the distribution of training data. The distance-based methods, which identify OOD examples based on their distances from the centroids of in-distribution (ID) examples, have demonstrated promising OOD detection performance. However, the objectives utilized in prior approaches are typically designed for classification and thus might not yield sufficient discriminative power to distinguish between ID and OOD examples. Therefore, this paper proposes a prototype-based contrastive learning framework for OOD detection, which is termed provable Discriminative Hyperspherical Embedding (DHE). The proposed framework provides a theoretical analysis of inter-class dispersion, which is proved to be fundamental in reducing the false positive rate (FPR) on OOD examples. Based on this, we devise an angular spread loss to achieve the maximal dispersion of the prototypes of different classes prior to training. Subsequently, a prototype-enhanced contrastive loss is introduced to align embeddings of ID examples closely with their corresponding prototypes. In our proposed DHE, the maximal prototype dispersion is theoretically proved, thereby avoiding the pitfalls of local optima commonly encountered by most existing methods. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed DHE, which showcases a remarkable reduction in FPR95 (i.e., 5.37% on CIFAR-100) and more than doubling the computational efficiency when compared with the state-of-the-art methods. The fifth generation(5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability,and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation(6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-airground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6GHz, millimeter wave(mmWave), terahertz(THz),and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence(AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Human conversations of recommendation naturally involve the shift of interests which can align the recommendation actions and conversation process to make accurate recommendations with rich explanations. However, existing conversational recommendation systems (CRS) ignore the advantage of user interest shift in connecting recommendation and conversation, which leads to an ineffective loose coupling structure of CRS. To address this issue, by modeling the recommendation actions as recommendation paths in a knowledge graph (KG), we propose DICR (Dual Imitation for Conversational Recommendation), which designs a dual imitation to explicitly align the recommendation paths and user interest shift paths in a recommendation module and a conversation module, respectively. By exchanging alignment signals, DICR achieves bidirectional promotion between recommendation and conversation modules and generates high-quality responses with accurate recommendations and coherent explanations. Experiments demonstrate that DICR outperforms the state-of-the-art models on recommendation and conversation performance with automatic, human, and novel explainability metrics. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.
