With tremendous research progress in biomedical sensors and sensor networks, there is an increasingly need for employing new data processing technologies that are capable of online analysis of the streaming medical sensor data, which is a typical health monitoring scenario. This paper describes using the data stream management system (DSMS) in developing ubiquitous health monitoring application. We propose the system architecture suitable for simultaneously processing streaming data from heterogeneous sources and performing different monitoring tasks planned by clinicians. A pilot heart rate variability (HRV) monitor with a graphical user interface is developed based on Borealis and several tasks are implemented, including monitoring Rmssd, MeanHR (mean heart rate), and pNN50. Results of the test runs in the lab environment show the usefulness and potential of DSMS in performing intelligent realtime medical data processing. © 2011 IEEE.

The automatic Web services composition has been a research focus since an ever-increasing numbers of Web services are created and published. In this paper, we present a dynamic description logics (DDLs) based method for automatic Web services composition. DDLs are an extension of description logic with a dynamic dimension. It adds actions expressions into description logic and makes up a set of reasoning mechanism for action expressions. The DDLs reasoner has been built for DDLs formulas. As an Web service can be regarded as an action in Web, its accomplishment changes the state of Web, from original state to aim state, an Web service can be described as an action in DDLs, which this action can be described in terms of formulas in DDLs. Due to these relations between Web service and DDLs actions, our method describes both the goal service and atomic services in terms of DDLs formulas. We proved that if a goal formula can not be satisfied then the services composition can be found. The procedure of checking the satisfiability of the formula is also the procedure of discovering the services composition. Thus the problem of automatic services composition is reduced to the problem of checking the satisfiability of formulas in DDLs. An example of automatic services composition in travel area shows the effectiveness of our method. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper proposes a novel face recognition algorithm inspired by the selective attention of Human Visual System (HVS). We record four observers' eye movements when they are viewing 100 FRGC [1] frontal view face images and find that the observers are highly consistent in the regions fixated. Inspired by the fact that fovea of HVS has a much higher spatial acuity than the periphery, a face recognition algorithm based on spatial variant sampling is proposed to simulate such foveated imaging phenomenon, where more information is reserved for the fixated regions. Moreover, information extracted from glance which adopts the low spatial frequency components of the image is integrated into the face recognition system to elicit a percept that occurs before any fixations. The experimental results on FERET database [2] demonstrate that the proposed method not only reduces the computational cost, but also achieves comparable performance, which shows that the characteristics of the HVS provide valuable insights into face recognition. © 2011 IEEE.

Rough set theory proposed by Pawlak, is a complementary generalization of classical set theory. The relations between rough sets and algebraic systems endowed with two binary operations such as rings, groups and semigroups have been already considered. Wu, Xie and Cao defined a pair of rough approximation operators based on a sub-space. In this paper we do the further study about the upper (lower)approximations. We propose concepts of W-upper(lower) rough subspaces in an approximation space and give some properties of the upper(lower) and rough subspaces. Some characterizations of the upper(lower) rough subspace are expressed with addition and intersection operations of subspaces. At the same time, some counterexamples are offered to illustrate the relevant results. © 2011 IEEE.

Dependency structure, as a first step towards semantics, is believed to be helpful to improve translation quality. However, previous works on dependency structure based models typically resort to insertion operations to complete translations, which make it difficult to specify ordering information in translation rules. In our model of this paper, we handle this problem by directly specifying the ordering information in head-dependents rules which represent the source side as head-dependents relations and the target side as strings. The head-dependents rules require only substitution operation, thus our model requires no heuristics or separate ordering models of the previous works to control the word order of translations. Large-scale experiments show that our model performs well on long distance reordering, and outperforms the state-of-the-art constituency-to-string model (+1.47 BLEU on average) and hierarchical phrase-based model (+0.46 BLEU on average) on two Chinese-English NIST test sets without resort to phrases or parse forest. For the first time, a source dependency structure based model catches up with and surpasses the state-of-the-art translation models. © 2011 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we formalize the task of finding a knowledge base entry that a given named entity mention refers to, namely entity linking, by identifying the most "important" node among the graph nodes representing the candidate entries. With the aim of ranking these entities by their "importance", we introduce three degree-based measures of graph connectivity. Experimental results on the TAC-KBP benchmark data sets show that our graph-based method performs comparably with the state-of-the-art methods. We also show that using the name phrase feature outperforms the commonly used bag-of-word feature for entity linking. © 2011 AFNLP

Recent research usually models POS tagging as a sequential labeling problem, in which only local context features can be used. Due to the lack of morphological inflections, many tagging ambiguities in Chinese are difficult to handle unless consulting larger contexts. In this paper, we try to improve Chinese POS tagging by using long-distance dependencies produced by a statistical dependency parser. Experimental results show that, despite error propagation, the syntactic features can significantly improve the tagging accuracy from 93.88% to 94.41% (p -5). Detailed analysis shows that these features are helpful for ambiguous pairs like {NN,VV} and {DEC,DEG}. © 2011 AFNLP

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) is one of the fundamental natural language processing tasks. However, lack of training corpora is a bottleneck to construct a high accurate all-words WSD system. Annotating a large-scale corpus by experts costs enormous time and financial resources. Human Computation is a novel idea for integrating human resources behind the Web, which has been wasted, to solve practical problems that are difficult for computers. Based on human computation, we design a confirmation code system, which can not only distinguish between human beings and computers (the function of normal confirmation code system), but also annotate WSD corpora. The preliminary experimental result shows that the proposed method can annotate large-scale and high-quality WSD corpora within a short time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use confirmation code in natural language processing for corpora acquisition. © 2011 AFNLP

We propose a novel locality sensitive vocabulary coding scheme to extract compact descriptors for low bit rate visual search. We employ Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to learn the topic vocabularies of lower dimension to generate compact descriptors. To deal with diverse datasets, LDA model is introduced to subdivide a dataset into groups of images with a topic model, where the code word distributions in each group produce coherent statistics from generative learning. Moreover, our empirical study has shown that the original Bag-of-Word (BoW) is sparse, and the occurrences of non-zero words is coherent within a topic. Our proposed topic-wise vocabulary learning yields a more compact yet discriminative codebook to search images. Given a query image, multiple topics are determined, which is fed into the topic vocabularies to generate more compact topical descriptor. Comparison experiments show our topic-wise locality sensitive vocabulary coding produces more compact and discriminative descriptors than the state-of-the-arts. © 2011 IEEE.

Image authentication is usually approached by checking the preservation of some invariant features, which are expected to be both robust and discriminative so that content-preserving operations are accepted while content-altering manipulations are rejected. However, most of existing features have not obtained convincing performance due to insufficiency of experiments and over biasing of robustness. Motivated by the sparse coding strategy discovered in primary visual cortex, we explore the possibility of using sparse coding coefficients for image authentication. Through extensive experiments, we discover that the proposed feature bears great discrimination as well as robustness, which indicates the effectiveness of sparse coding as a new invariant feature for image authentication. © 2011 IEEE.
