Robust principal component analysis (RPCA) is widely studied in computer vision. Recently an adaptive rank estimate based RPCA has achieved top performance in low-level vision tasks without the prior rank, but both the rank estimate and RPCA optimization algorithm involve singular value decomposition, which requires extremely huge computational resource for large-scale matrices. To address these issues, an efficient RPCA (eRPCA) algorithm is proposed based on block Krylov iteration and CUR decomposition in this paper. Specifically, the Krylov iteration method is employed to approximate the eigenvalue decomposition in the rank estimation, which requires $O(ndrq+n(rq)^{2})$ for an $(n\times d)$ input matrix, in which $q$ is a parameter with a small value, $r$ is the target rank. Based on the estimated rank, CUR decomposition is adopted to replace SVD in updating low-rank matrix component, whose complexity reduces from $O(rnd)$ to $O(r^{2}n)$ per iteration. Experimental results verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed eRPCA over the state-of-the-art methods in various low-level vision applications.

This paper studies the extreme learning machine (ELM)-based time-constrained trajectory tracking control of a class of robotic manipulator systems with model/input uncertainties, matched and mismatched disturbances. A uniform robust exact differentiator (URED) is developed to construct a multi-layer virtual control framework of the robotic manipulator system. Under the control framework, adaptive ELM-based control strategies are proposed to suppress the influence of the uncertainties and disturbances layer-by-layer, combining with the minimum learning parameter (MLP) technique which is employed to reduce the calculation complexity of ELM parameters. The significance of this study is that general model/input uncertainties, matched and mismatched disturbances can be effectively compensated within a limited time, so that bounded trajectory tracking of the robotic manipulator can be achieved avoiding the complexity explosion issue. The time-constrained stability of the closed-loop robotic error systems is proved through Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, comparative simulations are employed to display the feasibility and superiority of the designed robust adaptive ELM-based control schemes of a robotic manipulator system. © 2013 IEEE.

EarthGPT: A Universal Multi-modal Large Language Model for Multi-sensor Image Comprehension in Remote Sensing Domain

Multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable success in vision and visual-language tasks within the natural image domain. Owing to the significant diversities between the natural and remote sensing (RS) images, the development of MLLMs in the RS domain is still in the infant stage. To fill the gap, a pioneer MLLM named EarthGPT integrating various multi-sensor RS interpretation tasks uniformly is proposed in this paper for universal RS image comprehension. Firstly, a visual-enhanced perception mechanism is constructed to refine and incorporate coarse-scale semantic perception information and fine-scale detailed perception information. Secondly, a cross-modal mutual comprehension approach is proposed, aiming at enhancing the interplay between visual perception and language comprehension and deepening the comprehension of both visual and language content. Finally, a unified instruction tuning method for multi-sensor multi-task in the RS domain is proposed to unify a wide range of tasks including scene classification, image captioning, region-level captioning, visual question answering (VQA), visual grounding, object detection, etc. More importantly, a dataset named MMRS-1M featuring large-scale multi-sensor multi-modal RS instruction-following is constructed, comprising over 1M image-text pairs based on 34 existing diverse RS datasets and including multi-sensor images such as optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and infrared. The MMRS-1M dataset addresses the drawback of MLLMs on RS expert knowledge and stimulates the development of MLLMs in the RS domain. Extensive experiments are conducted, demonstrating the EarthGPT’s superior performance in various RS visual interpretation tasks compared with the other specialist models and MLLMs, proving the effectiveness of the proposed EarthGPT and offering a versatile paradigm for open-set reasoning tasks. Micro-expression (ME) is a crucial cue to reveal hidden emotions and helps to diagnose mental illnesses such as depression. However, their rapid and subtle characteristics make them difficult to recognize, and relying on a single ME feature is insufficient to capture comprehensive information about hidden emotions. This paper proposes an inverted bottleneck fusion network (IBFNet), which combines ME and facial tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) for multimodal feature fusion to improve the recognition of hidden emotions. Specifically, IBFNet learns different representations of each modal feature, namely common and individual features. The modalities are then mapped to different subspaces for feature refinement. We design the recurrent cross-modal attention (RCA) module to explore commonalities across modalities, retaining modality-specific information through auxiliary branches to enhance diversity. Finally, the inverted bottleneck structure is used to fuse the common and individual feature of ME and StO2. Experimental results demonstrate a recognition accuracy of 90.47%, which surpasses the limitations of single-modality recognition.

At present, there exist some problems in granular clustering methods, such as lack of nonlinear membership description and global optimization of granular data boundaries. To address these issues, in this study, revolving around the parabolic granular data, we propose an overall architecture for parabolic granular modeling and clustering. To begin with, novel coverage and specificity functions are established, and then a parabolic granular data structure is proposed. The fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is used to obtain the numeric prototypes, and then particle swarm optimization (PSO) is introduced to construct the parabolic granular data from the global perspective under the guidance of principle of justifiable granularity (PJG). Combining the advantages of FCM and PSO, we propose the parabolic granular modeling and optimization (PGMO) method. Moreover, we put forward attribute weights and sample weights as well as a distance measure induced by the Gaussian kernel similarity, and then come up with the algorithm of weighted kernel fuzzy clustering for parabolic granularity (WKFC-PG). In addition, the assessment mechanism of parabolic granular clustering is discussed. In summary, we set up an overall architecture including parabolic granular modeling, clustering, and assessment. Finally, comparative experiments on artificial, UCI, and high-dimensional datasets validate that our overall architecture delivers a good improvement over previous strategies. The parameter analysis and time complexity are also given for WKFC-PG. In contrast with related granular clustering algorithms, it is observed that WKFC-PG performs better than other granular clustering algorithms and has superior stability in handling outliers, especially on high-dimensional datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Enhancing Multi-turn Dialogue Modeling with Intent information for E-Commerce Customer Service 1

Nowadays, it is a heated topic for many industries to build intelligent conversational bots for customer service. A critical solution to these dialogue systems is to understand the diverse and changing intents of customers accurately. However, few studies have focused on the intent information due to the lack of large-scale dialogue corpus with intent labelled. In this paper, we propose to leverage intent information to enhance multi-turn dialogue modeling. First, we construct a large-scale Chinese multi-turn E-commerce conversation corpus with intent labelled, namely E-IntentConv, which covers 289 fine-grained intents in after-sales domain. Specifically, we utilize the attention mechanism to extract Intent Description Words (IDW) for representing each intent explicitly. Then, based on E-IntentConv, we propose to integrate intent information for both retrieval-based model and generation-based model to verify its effectiveness for multi-turn dialogue modeling. Experimental results show that extra intent information is useful for improving both response selection and generation tasks. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

News image captioning aims to generate captions or descriptions for news images automatically, serving as draft captions for creating news image captions manually. News image captions are different from generic captions as news image captions contain more detailed information such as entity names and events. Therefore, both images on news and the accompanying text are the source of generating caption of news image. Pointer-generator network is a neural method defined for text summarization. This article proposes the Multimodal pointer-generation network by incorporating visual information into the original network for news image captioning. The multimodal attention mechanism is proposed by splitting attention into visual attention paid to the image and textual attention paid to the text. The multimodal pointer mechanism is proposed by using both textual attention and visual attention to compute pointer distributions, where visual attention is first transformed into textual attention via the word-image relationships. The multimodal coverage mechanism is defined to reduce repetitions of attentions or repetitions of pointer distributions. Experiments on the DailyMail test dataset and the out-of-domain BBC test dataset show that the proposed model outperforms the original pointer-generator network, the generic image captioning method, the extractive news image captioning method, and the LDA-based method according BLEU, METEOR, and ROUGL-L evaluations. Experiments also show that the proposed multimodal coverage mechanisms can improve the model, and that transforming visual attention to pointer distributions can improve the model. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Medical image diagnosis in real clinical scenario faces the challenging open set recognition problem with domain shift. Based on the observation that it is often merely the local lesion areas in the whole image decide or cause the true seen or potential unseen disease labels, we propose a unified deep learning framework to address it by establishing a lesion-aware mask generator to guide the model towards focusing on the lesion areas for both seen and unseen diseases, followed by a multi-task feature learning module to extract the lesion image features; and an open set recognizer with improved capability to reject unseen classes. Last but not least, we propose tailored training strategies with mixed up data and mask augmentation for improved OSR and multi-clue cross-domain feature alignment for domain generalization. Through comparative experiments and ablation studies on the representative skin lesion benchmarks, we successfully validate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Topic shift detection aims to identify whether there is a change in the current topic of conversation or if a change is needed. The study found previous work did not evaluate the performance of large language models like ChatGPT on the task of topic shift. Therefore, this paper's main task and innovation lie in analyzing ChatGPT's performance on topic shift detection. To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we conducted topic shift detection tasks on ChatGPT from three aspects: single utterances, adjacent utterances, and contextual levels. Additionally, to gauge the performance of large language models, we conducted experiments on multiple small-scale models and compared the results of the two models. Experimental results on the publicly available English TIAGE dataset showed that small-scale models exhibited lower recall in all three aspects, while ChatGPT performed better in the recall. This suggests that compared to small-scale models, large models are more capable of accurately detecting topic shifts. However, large models also exhibited lower precision, indicating that while ChatGPT can recognize content differences in utterances, its judgment on whether these different contents belong to the same topic is poor.

Learning efficient text-to-image synthesis via interstage cross-sample similarity distillation

For a given text, previous text-to-image synthesis methods commonly utilize a multistage generation model to produce images with high resolution in a coarse-to-fine manner. However, these methods ignore the interaction among stages, and they do not constrain the consistent cross-sample relations of images generated in different stages. These deficiencies result in inefficient generation and discrimination. In this study, we propose an interstage cross-sample similarity distillation model based on a generative adversarial network(GAN) for learning efficient text-to-image synthesis. To strengthen the interaction among stages,we achieve interstage knowledge distillation from the refined stage to the coarse stages with novel interstage cross-sample similarity distillation blocks. To enhance the constraint on the cross-sample relations of the images generated at different stages, we conduct cross-sample similarity distillation among the stages. Extensive experiments on the Oxford-102 and Caltech-UCSD Birds-200-2011(CUB) datasets show that our model generates visually pleasing images and achieves quantitatively comparable performance with state-of-the-art methods.
