Compared with the classical irreversible failure propagation, the spontaneous recovery model can better depict the failure propagation on network systems such as financial and transportation networks. In this paper, we study how the non-Markovian recovery process influences cascading failure dynamics in the spontaneous recovery systems. To this end, we compare two kinds of failure-recovery models: the non-Markovian recovery (NMR) model and the corresponding Markovian recovery (MR) model. We first develop a Pairwise approximation theory for the MR and NMR models, which can predict the time evolution, steady state, and hysteresis behaviour of failure-recovery systems more accurately than the classical mean-field (MF) method. We find that although the non-Markovian recovery mechanism does not essentially affect the steady state and hysteresis behaviour of failure-recovery systems, the two models exhibit distinct evolution processes. When investigating the effect of initial conditions on the phase transition and hysteresis behavior, we find in the hysteresis region, the NMR model exhibits a non-monotonic growth characteristic: with the increase of initial failed nodes, the steady state staying in relative low-failure phase first turns into relative high-failure phase, and then into relative low-failure phase again. We then use the MF theory to explain the phenomenon qualitatively and point out when considering non-Markovian dynamics, we should study the steady state not only from the perspective of the variation of parameters, but also from the initial conditions. A fine-grained perspective on the robustness of global cargo ship transportation networks

The robustness of cargo ship transportation networks is essential to the stability of the world trade system. The current research mainly focuses on the coarse-grained, holistic cargo ship transportation network while ignoring the structural diversity of different sub-networks. In this paper, we evaluate the robustness of the global cargo ship transportation network based on the most recent Automatic Identification System（AIS） data available. First, we subdivide three typical cargo ship transportation networks（i.e., oil tanker, container ship and bulk carrier） from the original cargo ship transportation network. Then, we design statistical indices based on complex network theory and employ four attack strategies, including random attack and three intentional attacks（i.e., degree-based attack, betweenness-based attack and flux-based attack） to evaluate the robustness of the three typical cargo ship transportation networks. Finally, we compare the integrity of the remaining ports of the network when a small proportion of ports lose their function. The results show that 1） compared with the holistic cargo ship transportation network, the fine-grain-based cargo ship transportation networks can fully reflect the pattern and process of global cargo transportation; 2） different cargo ship networks behave heterogeneously in terms of their robustness, with the container network being the weakest and the bulk carrier network being the strongest; and 3） small-scale intentional attacks may have significant influence on the integrity of the container network but a minor impact on the bulk carrier and oil tanker transportation networks. Cooperator-driven and defector-driven punishments: How do they influence cooperation?

Economic studies have shown that there are two types of regulation schemes which can be considered as a vital part of today’s global economy: self-regulation enforced by self-regulation organizations to govern industry practices, and government regulation which is considered as another scheme to sustain corporate adherence. An outstanding problem of particular interest is to understand quantitatively the role of these regulation schemes in evolutionary dynamics. Typically, punishment usually occurs for enforcement of regulations. Taking into account both types of punishments to curve the regulations, we develop a game model where six evolutionary situations with corresponding combinations of strategies are considered. Furthermore, a semi-analytical method is developed to allow us to give an accurate estimations of the boundaries between the phases of full defection and nondefection. We find that, associated with the evolutionary dynamics, for infinite well-mixed population, the mix of both punishments performs better than one punishment alone in promoting public cooperation, but for networked population the cooperator-driven punishment turns out to be a better choice. We also uncover monotonous facilitating effects of synergy effect, punishment fine and feedback sensitivity on the public cooperation for infinite well-mixed population. Conversely, for networked population an optimal intermediate range of feedback sensitivity is needed to best promote punishers’ populations. Overall, networked structure is overall more favorable for punishers and further for public cooperation, because of both network reciprocity and mutualism between punishers and cooperators who do not punish defectors. We provide physical understandings of the observed phenomena, through a detailed statistical analysis of frequencies of different strategies and spatial pattern formations in different evolution situations. Having worked as the primary contact points among customers and companies in the last decades, contact centers become a great investment for many organizations. This paper aims to study a queuing system with abandonments for managing the modern contact centers, where the impatient customers would probably abandon their calls if their patience expires before they reach a service agent. We develop an Arena simulation model to determine the system performance of interest. To figure out some useful managerial insights, we conduct a sensitivity analysis of the proposed system through a series of numerical experiments. The contribution of this study is to help managers achieve a better understanding of the optimal design and operation at the real-world contact centers.

The simulation model of a risk-based three-tier inspection system is presented in the paper for the security management of screening passengers. In this study, passengers are classified to three risk classes(Trusted class, Regular class, and Risky class) based on their assessed risk level. A hybrid simulation model is developed to simulate the passengers' behavior from the moment they enter the inspection system until they leave the system. We study the performance evaluation of the proposed inspection system through an Arena simulation platform. The sensitivity analysis from a series of our numerical experiments shows the managerial effect of the model parameters on two performance measures in terms of passengers' average waiting time and the overall safety level.

Effects of Reduced Frequency on Network Configuration and Synchronization Transition

Synchronization of networked phase oscillators depends essentially on the correlation between the topological structure of the graph and the dynamical property of the elements. We propose the concept of ＇reduced frequency＇, a measure which can quantify natural frequencies of each pair of oscillators. Then we introduce an evolving network whose linking rules are controlled by its own dynamical property. The simulation results indicate that when the linking probability positively correlates with the reduced frequency, the network undergoes a first-order phase transition. Meanwhile, we discuss the circumstance under which an explosive synchronization can be ignited. The numerical results show that the peculiar butterfly shape correlation between frequencies and degrees of the nodes contributes to an explosive synchronization transition.

HelPal: A Search System for Mobile Crowd Service

Proliferation of ubiquitous mobile devices makes location based services prevalent. Mobile users are able to volunteer as providers of specific services and in the meanwhile to search these services. For example, drivers may be interested in tracking available nearby users who are willing to help with motor repair or are willing to provide travel directions or first aid. With the diffusion of mobile users, it is necessary to provide scalable means of enabling such users to connect with other nearby users so that they can help each other with specific services. Motivated by these observations, we design and implement a general location based system HelPal for mobile users to provide and enjoy instant service, which is called mobile crowd service. In this demo, we introduce a mobile crowd service system featured with several novel techniques. We sketch the system architecture and illustrate scenarios via several cases. Demonstration shows the user-friendly search interface for users to conveniently find skilled and qualified nearby service providers. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Transferrable feature and projection learning with class hierarchy for zero-shot learning

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to transfer knowledge from seen classes to unseen ones so that the latter can be recognised without any training samples. This is made possible by learning a projection function between a feature space and a semantic space (e.g. attribute space). Considering the seen and unseen classes as two domains, a big domain gap often exists which challenges ZSL. Inspired by the fact that an unseen class is not exactly 'unseen' if it belongs to the same superclass as a seen class, we propose a novel inductive ZSL model that leverages superclasses as the bridge between seen and unseen classes to narrow the domain gap. Specifically, we first build a class hierarchy of multiple superclass layers and a single class layer, where the superclasses are automatically generated by data-driven clustering over the semantic representations of all seen and unseen class names. We then exploit the superclasses from the class hierarchy to tackle the domain gap challenge in two aspects: Deep feature learning and projection function learning. First, to narrow the domain gap in the feature space, we integrate a recurrent neural network (RNN) defined with the superclasses into a convolutional neural network (CNN), in order to enforce the superclass hierarchy. Second, to further learn a transferrable projection function for ZSL, a novel projection function learning method is proposed by exploiting the superclasses to align the two domains. Importantly, our transferrable feature and projection learning methods can be easily extended to a closely related task - few-shot learning (FSL). Extensive experiments show that the proposed model significantly outperforms the state-ofthe- art alternatives in both ZSL and FSL tasks. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

An FeOx‐based Pt single‐atom catalyst(SAC),Pt1/FeOx,has stimulated significant recent interest owing to its extraordinary activity toward CO *** concept of SAC has also been successfully extended to other FeOx supported transition metal systems both experimentally and ***,the FeOx substrate itself(denoted by Fe1/FeOx following the same nomenclature of Pt1/FeOx)as a typical transition metal oxide possesses a very low catalytic activity toward CO oxidation,although it can be viewed as Fe1/FeOx ***,to understand the catalytic mechanism of FeOx‐based SACs for CO oxidation,we have performed density functional theory calculations on Pt1/FeOx and Fe1/FeOx for CO oxidation to address the differences between these two SACs in terms of the catalytic mechanism of CO oxidation and the chemical behavior of the *** calculation results indicated that the catalytic cycle of Fe1/FeOx is much more difficult to accomplish than that of SAC Pt1/FeOx because of a high activation barrier(1.09eV)for regeneration of the oxygen vacancy formed when the second CO2molecule desorbs from the ***,density of states and Bader charge analysis revealed differences in the catalytic performance for CO oxidation by the SACs Fe1/FeOx and Pt1/*** work provides insights into the fundamental interactions between the single‐atom Pt1and FeOx substrate,and the exceptional catalytic performance of this system for CO oxidation.
