Low carbon transmission expansion planning considering demand side management

The implementation of transmission expansion planning towards low carbon development can effectively alleviate the "carbon lock" effect in the power industry and facilitate the transition to low carbon power system. The demand side management (DSM) is able to reduce the needs of power supply and transmission capacity and further bring down the generation coal consumption and transmission losses. It is therefore an important means of carbon emission reduction in power system. The paper analyzes the impact of DSM and low carbon development on transmission planning at first. By analyzing the performance of typical DSM measures in the constraints, a low carbon transmission expansion planning model is established considering DSM. Nonlinear constraints in the planning model are transformed into linear ones using inequality separation method, turning the planning model into a mixed integer linear programming model. The case study shows the effectiveness of the proposed model with IEEE RTS79 system. The results suggest that considering DSM in the transmission expansion planning can effectively reduce the transmission expansion investment and the total carbon emissions, which can improve overall benefits of the power system. © 2016 Automation of Electric power systems Press.

A substation planning method that accounts for the widespread introduction of distributed generators(DGs)in a low-carbon economy is *** the proliferation of DGs,the capacity that DGs contribute to the distribution network has become increasingly *** capacity of a DG is expressed as a capacity credit(CC)that can be evaluated according to the principle that the reliability index is unchanged before and after the introduction of the DG.A method that employs a weighted Voronoi diagram is proposed for substation planning considering CC.A low-carbon evaluation objective function is added to the substation planning model to evaluate the contribution of DGs to a low-carbon economy.A case study is analyzed to demonstrate the practicality of the proposed method.

The series connection of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) allows the operation at voltage levels higher than the rated voltage of one IGBT. However, the technology has not been widely applied due to transient voltage unbalance. Asynchronous gate drive signals, which cause series-connected IGBTs not to turn-on and turn-off at the same time, result in serious unbalanced voltage sharing. This paper presents an active voltage balancing control for multi series connected HV-IGBTs including the active voltage balancing control (AVBC) circuit integrated in the gate driver and the control for multi series connected IGBTs. The effectiveness of the control has been experimentally validated in a 10 kV dc-link voltage converter using four 4.5 kV HV-IGBTs in series connection.

The application of reduced common mode voltage pulse width modulation methods bring much high order harmonics to the variable speed drive system, which causes considerable iron loss inside the electric motor. In this paper, an improved iron loss model considering those high order harmonics is proposed. Iron loss coefficients are obtained based on experimental data by utilizing multiple linear regression and harmonics analysis method. Comparisons of the iron losses between various PWM methods are made for both experimental results and calculated results. It is found that by utilizing RCMV PWM methods, the iron loss of the induction motor becomes larger. The differential values of iron losses between RCMV PWM and CPWM decrease with the increase of the modulation ratio as a result of the reduction of zero space vectors' action time. © 2015 IEEE.

The measured parameters change with the machine degradation, where the trends of the parameters can be applied in condition prediction. The deterioration of the parameters usually present characteristics in a monotonic or low-frequency way. As the measure signal are merged with instant signals, noise and measurement error in different frequency bands, model decomposition approaches are widely applied to separate the different bands for feature extraction. Among the model decomposition methods, Variational model decomposition is recently proposed by K. Dragomiretskiy and D. Zosso as a non-recursive model which can extract modes concurrently. This work will analyze its effectiveness in degradation feature extraction and application in condition prediction in prognosis. Firstly, variational model decomposition is analyzed, where the characteristics of variational model decomposition are compared with another mode decomposition method ensemble empirical mode decomposition. simulation data is applied to test the effectiveness of the mode decomposition methods. Secondly, field data with component degradation is collected, and the degradation feature extraction is applied with the three methods mentioned above.

By using theoretical and experimental methods, dynamic characteristics of turbine blades with integral shrouds are studied, and the mechanism of vibro-impact and the effective factors of integrally shrouded blades are mainly presented. By means of finite element calculation, the dynamic frequencies and vibration mode shapes of single shrouded blade are explored under different rotating speeds. The three-dimensional entity unit integral dynamics equation of blades with vibro-impact are established by using nonlinear damping model in this paper. With the help of 3D software Solidworks, the solid model of blade is built. With the aid of FEA software ANSYS, the dynamics and static characteristics of single blade are obtained. Meanwhile, by building the model to set different shroud clearance and exciting force amplitude, the relationships between displacement of blade tip and influence of such as blade shroud clearance and exciting force amplitude are demonstrated. The results of the analysis indicate that the collision structural is an ideal damping structure. As the clearance between blade shrouds is smaller, the damping effect is better. Moreover, results show that blades adopting collision damping mechanism can achieve good damping effect when the blades are subjected to greater exciting force.

The uncertainty caused by stochastic time delay of network communication increases the difficulty of wide-area control performance analysis. This paper proposes a mathematical expectation modeling approach to model and analyze wide-area controlled power systems considering the effect of stochastic time delay. In the proposed method, mathematical expectation of stochastic time delay distribution is derived to accurately model the impact of communication network on wide-area control performance. The theoretical frame of the proposed modeling approach is presented and the effectiveness of the method is verified through the simulation of a power system with 8 generators and 36 nodes.

Stochastic time delay is a new challenge brought out by communication network in wide-area damping control system. Uncertainty introduced by stochastic time delay increases the difficulty of modeling and stability analysis. In this paper, a new approach of stability analysis through expectation model is proposed to solve the problem of uncertainty in wide-area controlled power systems considering the effect of stochastic time delay. In the proposed method, expectation model considering detailed stochastic time delay distribution is derived to accurately model the impact of communication network on wide-area control performance. Then, through matrix transformation of expectation model, eigenvalue of wide-area damping control system considering time delay can be calculated, which can be used for analyzing the system stability. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is verified through the simulation of a power system with 8 generators and 36 nodes with different types of time delay distribution.

VSC-HVDC is one of the important development directions in smart grid. However, VSCs are vulnerable to dc-cable short-circuit faults due to the high discharge current from the dc-link capacitance. The huge current is a great threat to the capacitors and diodes. In order to limit the fault current to a relatively low level, the superconductive fault current limiter is introduced into the VSC-HVDC network and becomes an effective solution. The cardinal principle and electrical properties of SFCL are presented first. The transient process of the inter-pole short circuit fault in VSC-HVDC network with SFCL is analyzed. The effectiveness of SFCL is demonstrated through the comparison of fault current and voltage on network with and without SFCL. The correctness of the theoretical analysis is testified by simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC.
