As one of the most important parts in the operation and management of modern metropolis, distributed water supply networks is directly related to the residents' quality of life. Water demand forecast, as a classic problem in water management, is an efficient method to schedule urban water facilities. In this research, a multi-scale method based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and a dynamic architecture of Artificial Neural Network (DANN) is proposed to forecast the daily water demand in Shanghai. For the sake of achieving more accuracy and dealing with the nonlinearity and non-stationary in time series, EMD is adopted in the method. Due to DANN's good performance in forecasting the urban water demand, improvement in our research is appreciable. To meet requirements of the distributed system, the idea of multi-scale has congenital superiority in data process. There are four criteria utilized to evaluate the accuracy. In addition, a measurement of forecasting trend is defined to evaluate model's ability in forecasting the dynamic change in time series.

Chimera states in spatiotemporal dynamical systems have been investigated in physical, chemical, and biological systems, and have been shown to be robust against random perturbations. How do chimera states achieve their robustness? We uncover a self-adaptation behavior by which, upon a spatially localized perturbation, the coherent component of the chimera state spontaneously drifts to an optimal location as far away from the perturbation as possible, exposing only its incoherent component to the perturbation to minimize the disturbance. A systematic numerical analysis of the evolution of the spatiotemporal pattern of the chimera state towards the optimal stable state reveals an exponential relaxation process independent of the spatial location of the perturbation, implying that its effects can be modeled as restoring and damping forces in a mechanical system and enabling the articulation of a phenomenological model. Not only is the model able to reproduce the numerical results, it can also predict the trajectory of drifting. Our finding is striking as it reveals that, inherently, chimera states possess a kind of "intelligence" in achieving robustness through self adaptation. The behavior can be exploited for controlled generation of chimera states with their coherent component placed in any desired spatial region of the system. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. The balance between exploration and exploitation is a key problem for reinforcement learning methods, especially for Q-learning. In this paper, a fidelity-based probabilistic Qlearning (FPQL) approach is presented to naturally solve this problem and applied for learning control of quantum systems. In this approach, fidelity is adopted to help direct the learning process and the probability of each action to be selected at a certain state is updated iteratively along with the learning process, which leads to a natural exploration strategy instead of a pointed one with configured parameters. A probabilistic Q-learning (PQL) algorithm is first presented to demonstrate the basic idea of probabilistic action selection. Then the FPQL algorithm is presented for learning control of quantum systems. Two examples (a spin- 1/2 system and a Λ-type atomic system) are demonstrated to test the performance of the FPQL algorithm. The results show that FPQL algorithms attain a better balance between exploration and exploitation, and can also avoid local optimal policies and accelerate the learning process. Recently, location-based services have attracted significant attention. Against this background, one pivotal and challenging problem is predicting the future location of a user given his or her current location and associated historical mobility data. Predicting human mobility enables many interesting applications such as navigation services, traffic management and location-based advertisements. In this paper, we first extract the region-of-interest (ROI) from the historical location data. With plenty of statistics the original trajectory is represented by Markov chains composed by many ROIs. To improve the performance of the prediction, we extend 1st-order Markov chains to Kth-order Markov chains by reconstituting the structure of priori knowledge, which is intended to take more significant historical information into consideration. We evaluate the certainty of the prediction outcomes in terms of information entropy. We demonstrate that the prediction using a higher-order Markov chain can be more accurate compared with a 1st-order Markov chain. © 2016 IEEE.

Visual analyses of music history: A user-centric approach

Music history, referring to the records of users' listening or downloading history in online music services, is the primary source for music service providers to analyze users' preferences on music and thus to provide personalized recommendations to users. In order to engage users into the service and to improve user experience, it would be beneficial to provide visual analyses of one user's music history as well as visualized recommendations to that user. In this paper, we take a user-centric approach to the design of such visual analyses. We start by investigating user needs on such visual analyses and recommendations, then propose several different visualization schemes, and perform a pilot study to collect user feedback on the designed schemes. We further conduct user studies to verify the utility of the proposed schemes, and the results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed visualization, but also provide important insights to guide the visualization design in the future. In the present study, there are a number of recognition methods with high recognition accuracy, which are based on deep learning. However, these methods usually have a good effect in a restricted environment, but in the natural environment, the accuracy of face recognition has decreased significantly, especially in the case of occlusion, face recognition will appear inaccurate or unrecognized situation. Based on this, this paper presents a face recognition method based on the deep learning in the natural environment, hoping to achieve robust performance in the natural environment, especially in the case of occlusion. The main contribution of this paper is improving the method of multi-patches by using 4 areas' patches in the face. And in order to have a higher performance, we use a Joint Bayesian (JB) measure in face-verification. Finally, we trained the model by the set of CASIA-WebFace and test it in the Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW).

We study the problem of recognizing sign language automatically using the RGB videos and skeleton coordinates captured by Kinect, which is of great significance in communication between the deaf and the hearing societies. In this paper, we propose a sign language recognition (SLR) system with data of two channels, including the gesture videos of the sign words and joint trajectories. In our framework, we extract two modals of features to represent the hand shape videos and hand trajectories for recognition. The variation of gesture is obtained by 3D CNN and the activations of fully connected layers are used as the representations of these sign videos. For trajectories, we use the shape context to describe each joint, and combine them all within a feature matrix. After that, a convolutional neural network is applied to generate a robust representation of these trajectories. Furthermore, we fuse these features and train a SVM classifier for recognition. We conduct some experiments on large vocabulary sign language dataset with up to 500 words and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.
