This paper presents ongoing work in the formal definition and implementation of a normative framework in Answer Set Programming. The framework uses as basis an existing action language and enriches it with a formal definition of norms (implementing standard deontic operators such as obligations and permissions). Properties of a norm's lifecycle such as active, inactive, violated are specified. We argue that such properties can serve as a reasoning basis for the agent's cycle. A partial implementation of the framework is then presented. An example is used in order to illustrate the application of the principles presented.

Semiotics is a field where research on Computer Science methodologies has focused, mainly concerning Syntax and Semantics. These methodologies, however, are lacking of some flexibility for the continuously evolving web community, in which the knowledge is classified with tags rather than with ontologies. In this paper we propose a system for the recommendation of tagged pictures obtained from the Web. The system, driven by user feedback, executes an abductive reasoning (based on WordNet synset semantic relations) that is able to iteratively lead to new concepts which progressively represent the cognitive creative user state.

Urban Wastewater Systems (UWS) have an important role in nowadays growing and urbanized areas. The management of the water and wastewater cycle in these areas is complex since wastewater sources are both heterogeneous and rapidly changing. Moreover, it implies to deal with different spatial and temporal references and to adapt to the changing conditions that might appear in both natural and urban environments. New paradigms are required to be undertaken when designing and modelling this complex dynamic system, since the need to communicate the embedded elements is essential for an efficient and effective management and a better understanding of the UWS. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are systems composed of several software agents that collectively are capable of reaching goals that are difficult to achieve by individuals. The concept of MAS shapes an important step towards the possibility to design the system to reach decisions in a more collaboratively and integrated way. The paper proposes a primary but consistent design of UWS using an agent-oriented methodology (GAIA). The agents in the UWS are designed in terms of the roles they can perform, so the activities and protocols they act upon, which finally depict a detailed description of the relations in between them. A general hierarchy between the agents is also given (e.g. the acquaintance model). Therefore, the agent-oriented design enables to depict both micro and macro level design of the UWS management.

The more complex is the reality to be analyzed, the higher the risk of getting low quality data. knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD) offers a global framework to prepare data in the right form to perform correct analyses. On the other hand, the quality of decisions taken upon KDD results, depend not only on the quality of the results themselves, but on the capacity of the system to communicate those results in an understandable form. In this paper we propose a dialogue game for agents to deliberate over a proposed action. The agents' dialogue moves are defined by a structured set of argument schemes and critical questions (CQs). Thus, a dialogue move is an instantiated scheme (i.e. an argument) or a CQ (i.e. a challenge on the argument instantiated in the scheme). The proposed dialogue game formalises the protocol based exchange of arguments defined in the ProCLAIM model. This model provides a setting for agents to deliberate over whether, given the arguments for and against, a proposed action is justified or not.
