The integration of database and information retrieval techniques provides users with a wide range of high quality services. We present a prototype system, called NUITS, for efficiently processing keyword queries on top of a relational database. Our NUITS allows users to issue simple keyword queries as well as advanced keyword queries with conditions. The efficiency of keyword query processing and the user-friendly result display will also be addressed in this paper. Copyright 2006 VLDB Endowment, ACM

As the memory capacity increases and the hardware becomes cheaper, main memory databases (MMDB) have come true and been used in more and more applications, because they can provide better response time and throughputs. The advent of MMDB requires a reconsideration of data structures and algorithms of traditional DBMS. The index structure is one of the most important aspects that need be redesigned since it can affect the overall system performance heavily. Even though the T-tree index, which was proposed for main memory databases, has been widely accepted as a promising index structure. B+-tree and its variants still have their advantages in memory and are also regarded as the potential main memory database index structures. In this paper, we propose a new indexing technique called J+-tree for MMDB, inspired by the Judy structure which is an associative array data structure. Our J+-tree index not only holds the advantages of Judy (such as good single value search characteristic) but also outperforms it in many ways. For example, J +-tree can obtain better performance for range queries that are very slow in Judy structure. We compare the J+-tree index with Judy, T-tree and B+-tree on time and space aspects, and the experimental results show that J+-tree can provide better overall performance in main memory. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Entity search and exploration can enrich search user interfaces by presenting relevant information instantly and offering relevant exploration pointers to users. Previous research has demonstrated that large knowledge Graphs allow exploitation and recommendation of explicit links between the entities and other information to improve information access and ranking. However, less attention has been devoted to user interfaces for effectively presenting results, recommending related entities and explaining relations between entities. We introduce a system called SEED which is designed to support entity search and exploration in large knowledge Graphs. We demonstrate SEED using a dataset of hundreds of thousands of movie related entities from the DBpedia knowledge Graph. The system utilizes a graph embedding model for ranking entities and their relations, recommending related entities, and explaining their interrelations. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

A common application of virtual machines (VM) is to use and then throw away, basically treating a VM like a completely isolated and disposable entity. The disadvantage of this approach is that if there is no malicious activity, the user has to re-do all of the work in her actual workspace since there is no easy way to commit (i.e., merge) only the benign updates within the VM back to the host environment. In this work, we develop a VM commitment system called Secom to automatically eliminate malicious state changes when merging the contents of an OS-level VM to the host. Secom consists of three steps: grouping state changes into clusters, distinguishing between benign and malicious clusters, and committing benign clusters. Secom has three novel features. First, instead of relying on a huge volume of log data, it leverages OS-level information flow and malware behavior information to recognize malicious changes. As a result, the approach imposes a smaller performance overhead. Second, different from existing intrusion detection and recovery systems that detect compromised OS objects one by one, Secom classifies objects into clusters and then identifies malicious objects on a cluster by cluster basis. Third, to reduce the false positive rate when identifying malicious clusters, it simultaneously considers two malware behaviors that are of different types and the origin of the processes that exhibit these behaviors, rather than considers a single behavior alone as done by existing malware detection methods. We have successfully implemented Secom on the Feather-weight Virtual Machine (FVM) system, a Windows-based OS-level virtualization system. Experiments show that the prototype can effectively eliminate malicious state changes while committing a VM with small performance degradation. Moreover, compared with the commercial anti-malware tools, the Secom prototype has a smaller number of false negatives and thus can more thoroughly clean up malware side effects. In addit

This paper aims to identify knowledge management (KM) methods that have been used in three KM Standards, i.e. KM Standards of Britain, European Union(EU) and Australia, with comparative analysis of three KM issues covering: basic definitions, KM work processes, essential factors and management frameworks;with a chronological analysis of their characteristics and evolution. The studies find that along with the practical development of KM practices, concepts of KM are getting understood more and more broadly, ranges of KM activities are extending, but management factors are getting highly integrated, and the management frameworks are going towards ecosystem. The paper provides valuable insight on theoretical and practical development of knowledge management methods and standards.

This paper addresses a new text classification method: Sparse Topic Model, which represents documents by the sparse coding of topics. Topics contain more semantic information than words, so it's more effective for feature representation of documents. Topics are extracted from documents by LDA in an unsupervised way. Based on these topics, sparse coding is applied to discover more high-level representation. We compare the Sparse Topic Model with the traditional methods, such as SVM, and the experimental result show that the proposed method achieves better performance, especially when the number of training examples is limited. The effect of topic number and word number per topic on the performance is also investigated. Due to the unsupervised characteristic of Sparse Topic Model, it's very useful for real application.

Discovering the relationship between protein sequence pattern and protein secondary structure is important for accurately predicting secondary structure of protein sequence. A protein secondary structure pattern dictionary is constructed using protein sequence pattern and its corresponding secondary structure in this paper. Based on the constructed dictionary, we propose four effect factors on secondary structure of protein sequence pattern, including 1) the core pattern itself;2) patterns or amino acid residues that neighbor with the core pattern;3) patterns or amino acid residues that are far away from the core pattern;and 4) amino acid sequence segment that match the core pattern. Statistical measures are adopted to analyze these factors. The experimental result shows the reliability of these factors. The recognition of these effect factors presents new directions to predict protein secondary structure based on protein pattern dictionary. © 2011 IEEE.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) can be viewed as a new type of distributed databases. data management technology is one of the core technologies of WSNs. In this demo we show a Query Processing system based on TinyOS in WSNs, which is called TinyQP. TinyQP provides the in-network processing of several complex queries including real time query, historical query, event detection, aggregate query, top-k query, etc. TinyQP displays the network topology in a graphical way. TinyQP allows the user to remotely execute query commands and browse query result. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper, we address the problem of data Compression which is critical in wireless sensor networks. We proposed a novel Topology-based data Compression (TDC) algorithm for wireless sensor networks. We utilize the topological structure of routing tree to reduce the transmission of message packets. We analyzed the differences and relations between our algorithm and other compression algorithms. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed TDC approach by using two kinds of data sets: real data set and synthetic data set. The results show that the TDC algorithm substantially outperforms Non-compression algorithm in terms of packets transmitted. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In update intensive applications, main memory database systems produce large volume of log records, it is critical to write out the log records efficiently to speedup transaction processing. We propose a parallel recovery scheme based on XOR differential logging for main memory database systems in such environments. Some NVRAM is used to temporarily hold log records and decouple transaction committing from disk writes, inherited parallelism properties of differential logging are exploited to accelerate log flushing by using multiple log disks. During recovery, log records are loaded from multiple log disks and applied to data partition in time without the need of reordering according to serialization order, total recovery time is cut down. The scheme employs a data partition based consistent checkpointing method. The log records are classified according to IDs of data partitions accessed. data partitions are recovered according to loading priorities computed from update frequencies and transaction waiting times, data access demands of new transactions coming after failure recovery are given attention immediately, thus the scheme provides system availability during recovery, which is of importance for large scale main memory database systems.
