Student cognitive modeling (SCM) is a fundamental task in intelligent education, with applications ranging from personalized learning to educational resource allocation. By exploiting students' response logs, SCM aims to predict their exercise performance as well as estimate knowledge proficiency in a subject. data mining approaches such as matrix factorization can obtain high accuracy in predicting student performance on exercises, but the knowledge proficiency is unknown or poorly estimated. The situation is further exacerbated if only sparse interactions exist between exercises and students (or knowledge concepts). To solve this dilemma, we root monotonicity (a fundamental psychometric theory on educational assessments) in a co-factorization framework and present an autoencoder-like nonnegative matrix co-factorization (AE-NMCF), which improves the accuracy of estimating the student's knowledge proficiency via an encoder-decoder learning pipeline. The resulting estimation problem is nonconvex with nonnegative constraints. We introduce a projected gradient method based on block coordinate descent with Lipschitz constants and guarantee the method's theoretical convergence. Experiments on several real-world data sets demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in terms of both performance prediction accuracy and knowledge estimation ability, when compared with existing student cognitive models. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Early diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) can inhibit the progression and improve femoral head preservation. The radiograph difference between early ONFH and healthy ones is not apparent to the naked eye. It is also hard to produce a large dataset to train the classification model. In this paper, we propose Asymmetric-Sensitive Transformer (AsT) to capture the uneven development of the bilateral femoral head to enable robust ONFH detection. Our ONFH detection is realized using the self-attention mechanism to femoral head regions while conferring sensitivity to the uneven development by the attention-shared transformer. The real-world experiment studies show that AsT achieves the best performance of AUC 0.9313 in the early diagnosis of ONFH and can find out misdiagnosis cases firmly. The field of adversarial textual attack has significantly grown over the past few years, where the commonly considered objective is to craft adversarial examples (AEs) that can successfully fool the target model. However, the imperceptibility of attacks, which is also essential for practical attackers, is often left out by previous studies. In consequence, the crafted AEs tend to have obvious structural and semantic differences from the original human-written text, making them easily perceptible. In this work, we advocate leveraging multi-objectivization to address such an issue. Specifically, we reformulate the problem of crafting AEs as a multi-objective optimization problem, where the attack imperceptibility is considered as an auxiliary objective. Then, we propose a simple yet effective evolutionary algorithm, dubbed HydraText, to solve this problem. HydraText can be effectively applied to both score-based and decision-based attack settings. Exhaustive experiments involving 44,237 instances demonstrate that HydraText consistently achieves competitive attack success rates and better attack imperceptibility than the recently proposed attack approaches. A human evaluation study also shows that the AEs crafted by HydraText are more indistinguishable from human-written text. Finally, these AEs exhibit good transferability and can bring notable robustness improvement to the target model by adversarial training. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Over the past decade, various methods for detecting side-channel leakage have been proposed and proven to be effective against CPU side-channel attacks. These methods are valuable in assisting developers to identify and patch side-channel vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, recent research has revealed the feasibility of exploiting side-channel vulnerabilities to steal sensitive information from GPU applications, which are beyond the reach of previous side-channel detection methods. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct an in-depth examination of various GPU features and present Owl, a novel side-channel detection tool targeting CUDA applications on NVIDIA GPUs. Owl is designed to detect and locate side-channel leakage in various types of CUDA applications. When tracking the execution of CUDA applications, we design a hierarchical tracing scheme and extend the A-DCFG (Attributed Dynamic Control Flow Graph) to address the massively parallel execution in CUDA, ensuring Owl's detection scalability. After completing the initial assessment and filtering, we conduct statistical tests on the differences in program traces to determine whether they are indeed caused by input variations, subsequently facilitating the positioning of side-channel leaks. We evaluate Owl's capability to detect side-channel leaks by testing it on Libgpucrypto, PyTorch, and nvJPEG. Meanwhile, we verify that our solution effectively handles a large number of threads. Owl has successfully identified hundreds of leaks within these applications. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to implement side-channel leakage detection for general CUDA applications.

Due to the convenience and popularity of Web applications, they have become a prime target for attackers. As the main programming language for Web applications, many methods have been proposed for detecting malicious JavaScript, among which static analysis-based methods play an important role because of their high effectiveness and efficiency. However, obfuscation techniques are commonly used in JavaScript, which makes the features extracted by static analysis contain many useless and disguised features, leading to many false positives and false negatives in detection results. In this paper, we propose a novel method to find out the essential features related to the semantics of JavaScript code. Specifically, we develop JS-Revealer, a robust, effective, scalable, and interpretable detector for malicious JavaScript. To test the capabilities of JSRevealer, we conduct comparative experiments with four other state-of-the-art malicious JavaScript detection tools. The experimental results show that JSRevealer has an average F1 of 84.8% on the data obfuscated by different obfuscators, which is 21.6%, 22.3%, 18.7%, and 22.9% higher than the tools CUJO, ZOZZLE, JAST, and JSTAP, respectively. Moreover, the detection results of JSRevealer can be interpreted, which can provide meaningful insights for further security research.

User-generated content is daily produced in social media, as such user interest summarization is critical to distill salient information from massive information. While the interested messages (e.g., tags or posts) from a single user are usually sparse becoming a bottleneck for existing methods, we propose a topic-aware graph-based neural interest summarization method (UGraphNet), enhancing user semantic mining by unearthing potential user relations and jointly learning the latent topic representations of posts that facilitates user interest learning. Experiments on two datasets collected from well-known social media platforms demonstrate the superior performance of our model in the tasks of user interest summarization and item recommendation. Further discussions also show that exploiting the latent topic representations and user relations are conductive to the user automatic language understanding. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The challenge of interpretability remains a significant barrier to adopting deep neural networks in healthcare domains. Although tree regularization aims to align a deep neural network’s decisions with a single axis-aligned decision tree, however, relying on one tree for all inputs often leads to sub-optimal performance and interoperability. To address this limitation, we propose an enhanced tree regularization method that integrates a post-hoc visual explainable model such as Grad-CAM. This approach guides the deep model to be well-approximated by decision trees tailored to the salient regions identified by Grad-CAM in the input space. We rigorously validate the effectiveness of this framework on two cancer cell datasets: CNMC, which focuses on acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells, and ISBI2016, which comprises benign and malignant skin lesions. The results demonstrate that the proposed method delivers simpler and more interpretable explanations without compromising accuracy, thereby advancing the interpretability of deep learning models in critical healthcare applications.

What is the focus of energy supply chain relationship management during geopolitical risks? Evidence from the stock market based on transaction cost economics

This study examines B2B relationship management practices in energy supply chains under geopolitical risks and their impact on stock market volatility. We analyze U.S. energy firms' earnings conference calls across three dimensions: intra-firm managerial behavior, inter-firm relationship management, and relationship evaluation. Employing Word2Vec and structural topic modeling, we identify specific B2B relationship management strategies deployed during geopolitical uncertainties. Our findings reveal varied effects of these strategies on market volatility. Controls on energy prices, carbon-neutral technological alliances, and ESG assessments contribute to increased volatility. Conversely, strategies focused on maintaining demand in changing markets, long-term shareholder return management, strategic industry communication, and enhanced technological R&D partnerships reduce volatility. Notably, R&D cooperation in LNG technology, customer interaction improvements, and operational efficiency initiatives show no significant effect. Furthermore, market attention moderates the relationship between B2B relationship management and market volatility. Disclosures emphasizing long-term investments correlate with decreased market share and reduced volatility, while short-term investment communications increase both market share and volatility. It suggests energy firms must balance short-term performance with long-term stability in their disclosure strategies. This research advances the application of artificial intelligence in B2B relationship management under geopolitical uncertainty, enriching theoretical foundations in energy supply chain management while providing practical guidance for firms navigating complex global risks.

Sequential Recommendation (SR) intends to model user interests based on historical behavior sequences and suggest the next item. Most existing sequential models primarily focus on learning users’ preferences on the relevance objective of the target item. However, the investigation of personalized preferences on the diversity objective of SR results is usually ignored. Evolutionary algorithms have amply demonstrated effectiveness in solving multi-objective problems but encounter efficiency bottlenecks when applied to multi-objective recommendation tasks due to the limited scalability at the user level. To address the problem, this study proposes to facilitate diversified SR via a multi-objective transfer optimization algorithm, in which each optimization task corresponds to the recommendation for a target user. With the optimization knowledge of user preference transferred within and across tasks, the diversified SR of a set of users can synchronously proceed. The novelty of our proposed algorithm is fully utilizing the outstanding global search capability of evolutionary multi-objective optimization without hindering the efficiency of sequential models.
