Gradient leakage attacks pose a significant threat to the privacy guarantees of federated learning. While distortion-based protection mechanisms are commonly employed to mitigate this issue, they often lead to notable performance degradation. Existing methods struggle to preserve model performance while ensuring privacy. To address this challenge, we propose a novel data augmentation-based framework designed to achieve a favorable privacy-utility trade-off, with the potential to enhance model performance in certain cases. Our framework incorporates the AugMix algorithm at the client level, enabling data augmentation with controllable severity. By integrating the Jensen-Shannon divergence into the loss function, we embed the distortion introduced by AugMix into the model gradients, effectively safeguarding privacy against deep leakage attacks. Moreover, the JS divergence promotes model consistency across different augmentations of the same image, enhancing both robustness and performance. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and stability of our method in protecting privacy. Furthermore, our approach maintains, and in some cases improves, model performance, showcasing its ability to achieve a robust privacy-utility trade-off. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a retina disorder that affects premature infants with lower weights. If the patient cannot get the treatment in time when the illness reaches the last stage, irreversible vision loss will be caused. Nevertheless, there has been relatively little consideration given to the segmentation of the ridge, the key clinical characteristic of the illness. Additionally, existing research has not adequately addressed several segmentation issues, such as fragmentary topology, class imbalance, and false positives. This paper proposes a Densely Dilated U-Net (DD-UNet) improved from U-Net to tackle these challenges. Furthermore, the post-processing techniques based on the spatial relationship between vessels and ridges, along with the relative pixel counts of ridges and false positive results is integrated to mitigate false positive results in the predicted ridge. To enhance the precision of thin vessel, a sliding window sampling method is introduced for refined training. Compared with the state-of-the-art models in medical image segmentation, DD-UNet performs well in curvilinear structure segmentation of fundus image. For instance, our DD-UNet outperforms the Attention U-Net by 6.26% in terms of sensitivity and exhibits a 1.85% higher dice score in ridge segmentation.

Recently a promising research direction of statistical learning has been advocated, i.e., the optimal margin distribution learning, with the central idea of optimizing the margin distribution. As the most representative approach of this new learning paradigm, the optimal margin distribution machine (ODM) considers maximizing the margin mean and minimizing the margin variance simultaneously. The standard ODM exploits the ℓ_2-norm penalty, which gives rise to a dense decision boundary. However, in some situations, the model with parsimonious representation is more preferred, due to the redundant noisy features or limited computing resources. In this paper, we propose the sparse optimal margin distribution machine (Sparse ODM), which aims to achieve better generalization performance with moderate model size. For optimization, we extends an efficient coordinate descent method to solve the final problem since the variables are decoupled. In each iteration, we propose a modified Newton method to solve the one-variable sub-problem. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data sets show the superiority of the proposed method.

Document retrieval plays an essential role in many real-world applications especially when the data storage is outsourced. Due to the great advantages offered by cloud computing, clients tend to outsource their personal data to remote servers maintained by external service providers. This raises serious privacy concerns about outsourced data because such providers are usually considered untrusted entities. The majority of previous schemes of document similarity search share the same limitation: they focus mainly on static collections. Dynamic searchable schemes (DSE) allow adding or removing documents at the expense of more leakage than static schemes. To thwart certain attacks, DSE schemes should support forward privacy property, which ensures that newly added documents cannot be related to previously issued search queries. We design and implement dynamic secure similarity search schemes with forward privacy for textual documents utilizing simhash method for hamming similarity. Our scheme provides an efficient search time and a sufficient level of privacy. To show the practicality of our proposed scheme, we performed excremental results with large document collections. © 2023 IEEE.

Contrastive Learning for Robust Android Malware Familial Classification

Due to its open-source nature, Android operating system has been the main target of attackers to exploit. Malware creators always perform different code obfuscations on their apps to hide malicious activities. Features extracted from these obfuscated samples through program analysis contain many useless and disguised features, which leads to many false negatives. To address the issue, in this paper, we demonstrate that obfuscation-resilient malware family analysis can be achieved through contrastive learning. The key insight behind our analysis is that contrastive learning can be used to reduce the difference introduced by obfuscation while amplifying the difference between malware and other types of malware. Based on the proposed analysis, we design a system that can achieve robust and interpretable classification of Android malware. To achieve robust classification, we perform contrastive learning on malware samples to learn an encoder that can automatically extract robust features from malware samples. To achieve interpretable classification, we transform the function call graph of a sample into an image by centrality analysis. Then the corresponding heatmaps can be obtained by visualization techniques. These heatmaps can help users understand why the malware is classified as this family. We implement IFDroid and perform extensive evaluations on two datasets. Experimental results show that IFDroid is superior to state-of-the-art Android malware familial classification systems. Moreover, IFDroid is capable of maintaining a 98.4% F1 on classifying 69,421 obfuscated malware samples. © 2021, CC0.

Challenges and Approaches for Mitigating Byzantine Attacks in Federated Learning

Recently emerged federated learning (FL) is an attractive distributed learning framework in which numerous wireless end-user devices can train a global model with the data remained autochthonous. Compared with the traditional machine learning framework that collects user data for centralized storage, which brings huge communication burden and concerns about data privacy, this approach can not only save the network bandwidth but also protect the data privacy. Despite the promising prospect, Byzantine attack, an intractable threat in conventional distributed network, is discovered to be rather efficacious against FL as well. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive investigation of the state-of-the-art strategies for defending against Byzantine attacks in FL. We first provide a taxonomy for the existing defense solutions according to the techniques they used, followed by an across-the-board comparison and discussion. Then we propose a new Byzantine attack method called weight attack to defeat those defense schemes, and conduct experiments to demonstrate its threat. The results show that existing defense solutions, although abundant, are still far from fully protecting FL. Finally, we indicate possible countermeasures for weight attack, and highlight several challenges and future research directions for mitigating Byzantine attacks in FL. © 2021, CC BY.

SMT solvers check the satisfiability of logic formulas over first-order theories, which have been utilized in a rich number of critical applications, such as software verification, test case generation, and program synthesis. Bugs hidden in SMT solvers would severely mislead those applications and further cause severe consequences. Therefore, ensuring the reliability and robustness of SMT solvers is of critical importance. Although many approaches have been proposed to test SMT solvers, it is still a challenge to discover bugs effectively. To tackle such a challenge, we conduct an empirical study on the historical bug-triggering formulas in SMT solvers' bug tracking systems. We observe that the historical bug-triggering formulas contain valuable skeletons (i.e., core structures of formulas) as well as associated atomic formulas which can cast significant impacts on formulas' ability in triggering bugs. Therefore, we propose a novel approach that utilizes the skeletons extracted from the historical bug-triggering formulas and enumerates atomic formulas under the guidance of association rules derived from historical formulas. In this study, we realized our approach as a practical fuzzing tool HistFuzz and conducted extensive testing on the well-known SMT solvers Z3 and cvc5. To date, HistFuzz has found 111 confirmed new bugs for Z3 and cvc5, of which 108 have been fixed by the developers. More notably, out of the confirmed bugs, 23 are soundness bugs and invalid model bugs found in the solvers' default mode, which are essential for SMT solvers. In addition, our experiments also demonstrate that HistFuzz outperforms the state-of-the-art SMT solver fuzzers in terms of achieved code coverage and effectiveness.

Multi-version graph processing has been widely used to solve many real-world problems. The process of the multi-version graph processing typically includes: (1) a history graph version switching at a specific time and (2) graph processing on this history graph. Existing multi-version graph systems assume ideally that every request for a particular graph version at a particular time will have a corresponding snapshot available. However, in most cases, this is not true. Then existing solutions usually have to settle with an "approximating" version as a substitute, leading to unexpected results for the underlying graph algorithm and thus reducing the practicality of a multi-version graph system for many application scenarios *** this paper, we observe that only a few graph updates have a great impact on the final results. We therefore present AFaVS, a novel multi-version graph system that can improve accuracy effectively in both time- and memory-efficient manners. The cornerstone of AFaVS lies in a novel concept "value" that characterizes the importance of graph updates. AFaVS proposes differential management of updates based on their values and achieves higher accuracy while preserving processing and memory efficiency. AFaVS is also equipped with value-guided version switching and locality-aware optimizations to boost its overall efficiency. Our results on a variety of real-world datasets show that AFaVS outperforms four state-of-the-art multi-version graph systems by 74.35%~95.72% in terms of accuracy improvement and 57.03%~90.44% in terms of memory reduction while introducing less than 2.96% extra computing time. We have deployed AFaVS in a disaster recovery system on the production cluster of Alibaba, achieving 78.8%~90.1% fewer error rates than advanced systems at a comparable efficiency.

RGB-Thermal Salient Object Detection (RGBT-SOD) plays a critical role in complex scene recognition applications, such as autonomous driving. However, security research in this domain is still in its infancy. This paper presents the first backdoor attack on RGBT-SOD systems, generating saliency maps on triggered inputs that depict non-existent salient objects chosen by the attacker or falsely mark an entire image as fully salient or entirely non-salient. We uncover that triggers have an influence range for generating non-existent salient objects, supported by a theoretical analysis. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of our attack in both digital and physical-world scenarios. Notably, our dual-modality backdoor attack achieves an Attack Success Rate (ASR) of 86.72% with only five pairs of poisoned images in model training. After investigating potential countermeasures, we find them inadequate in mitigating our attacks, highlighting the urgent need for robust defenses against sophisticated backdoor attacks in RGBT-SOD systems. © 2024 ACM.

In the field of finance, data has the characteristics of temporal multi-frequency and heterogeneous high dimension, and the traditional knowledge graph is not suitable to express the temporal relation of financial data, so the financial temporal knowledge graph has become a research hotspot recently. There are a large number of temporal edges in the financial temporal knowledge graph. The use of general graph database management system to store financial knowledge graph data has problems such as large storage scale and slow update speed, and it cannot realize the traceability of financial data, so it cannot meet the needs of the financial field. In order to solve these problems, HyperBit, a storage system for efficient storage and management of financial data, is designed and implemented. Firstly, a temporal quad storage structure is proposed. Secondly, the Log Structured Cumulative Update (LSCU) is proposed to update financial temporal data efficiently. The update log module is designed in the system. When there is data to update, it is not directly updated in the data storage of the system, but recorded in the update log, and the system updates the content of the update log cumulatively. The system manages update logs by partition and chunk, which makes the log storage compact and independent. Besides, it is convenient for parallel processing and it improves the data update speed. Thirdly, a Bidirectional Backtracking by Final and Optimal Root (BBFOR) method is proposed to meet the requirements of efficient traceability of financial data. Unlike traditional version tracing method, BBFOR adopt both the snapshot and incremental methods which balance the space and time cost of version switching, and BBROF consider the version of the access frequency characteristic and set up the final root and the optimal root. Besides, BBROF adopt bidirectional backtracking technology to improve the efficiency of the version switching. Experimental results show that the storage cost
