A fine-grained perspective on the robustness of global cargo ship transportation networks

The robustness of cargo ship transportation networks is essential to the stability of the world trade system. The current research mainly focuses on the coarse-grained, holistic cargo ship transportation network while ignoring the structural diversity of different sub-networks. In this paper, we evaluate the robustness of the global cargo ship transportation network based on the most recent Automatic Identification system（AIS） data available. First, we subdivide three typical cargo ship transportation networks（i.e., oil tanker, container ship and bulk carrier） from the original cargo ship transportation network. Then, we design statistical indices based on complex network theory and employ four attack strategies, including random attack and three intentional attacks（i.e., degree-based attack, betweenness-based attack and flux-based attack） to evaluate the robustness of the three typical cargo ship transportation networks. Finally, we compare the integrity of the remaining ports of the network when a small proportion of ports lose their function. The results show that 1） compared with the holistic cargo ship transportation network, the fine-grain-based cargo ship transportation networks can fully reflect the pattern and process of global cargo transportation; 2） different cargo ship networks behave heterogeneously in terms of their robustness, with the container network being the weakest and the bulk carrier network being the strongest; and 3） small-scale intentional attacks may have significant influence on the integrity of the container network but a minor impact on the bulk carrier and oil tanker transportation networks. Automatically detecting software vulnerabilities in source code is an important problem that has attracted much attention. In particular, deep learning-based vulnerability detectors, or DL-based detectors, are attractive because they do not need human experts to define features or patterns of vulnerabilities. However, such detectors' robustness is unclear. In this paper, we initiate the study in this aspect by demonstrating that DL-based detectors are not robust against simple code transformations, dubbed attacks in this paper, as these transformations may be leveraged for malicious purposes. As a first step towards making DL-based detectors robust against such attacks, we propose an innovative framework, dubbed ZigZag, which is centered at (i) decoupling feature learning and classifier learning and (ii) using a ZigZag-style strategy to iteratively refine them until they converge to robust features and robust classifiers. This paper presents a Scientific Literature Management Platform (SLMP, demo link 1 ) based on large language models (LLMs). The platform consists of four modules: literature management, literature extraction, literature retrieval, and question answering. The core techniques used to support the four modules across the platform include a fine-tuned model PaperExtractGPT and a continual pre-training model ChatPaperGPT based on ChatGLM 2 using the data from scientific research literature, responsible for information extraction and communication, respectively. Due to their powerful capabilities in natural language understanding and generation, LLMs can understand complex scientific concepts based on the provided contexts, and thus generate high-quality texts and conduct in-depth information retrieval and question answering. Our platform can help researchers manage and utilize literature more effectively and efficiently for finding relevant literature, obtaining required information, and generating new knowledge.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) possess high mobility and flexible deployment capabilities, prompting the development of UAVs for various application scenarios within the Internet of Things (IoT). The unique capabilities of UAVs give rise to increasingly critical and complex tasks in uncertain and potentially harsh environments. The substantial amount of data generated from these applications necessitates processing and analysis through deep neural networks (DNNs). However, UAVs encounter challenges due to their limited computing resources when managing DNN models. This paper presents a joint approach that combines multiple-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and generative diffusion models (GDM) for assigning DNN tasks to a UAV swarm, aimed at reducing latency from task capture to result output. To address these challenges, we first consider the task size of the target area to be inspected and the shortest flying path as optimization constraints, employing a greedy algorithm to resolve the subproblem with a focus on minimizing the UAV’s flying path and the overall system cost. In the second stage, we introduce a novel DNN task assignment algorithm, termed GDM-MADDPG, which utilizes the reverse denoising process of GDM to replace the actor network in multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG). This approach generates specific DNN task assignment actions based on agents’ observations in a dynamic environment. Simulation results indicate that our algorithm performs favorably compared to benchmarks in terms of path planning, Age of Information (AoI), energy consumption, and task load balancing. Video2Reward: Generating Reward Function from Videos for Legged Robot Behavior Learning

Learning behavior in legged robots presents a significant challenge due to its inherent instability and complex constraints. Recent research has proposed the use of a large language model (LLM) to generate reward functions in reinforcement learning, thereby replacing the need for manually designed rewards by experts. However, this approach, which relies on textual descriptions to define learning objectives, fails to achieve controllable and precise behavior learning with clear directionality. In this paper, we introduce a new video2reward method, which directly generates reward functions from videos depicting the behaviors to be mimicked and learned. Specifically, we first process videos containing the target behaviors, converting the motion information of individuals in the videos into keypoint trajectories represented as coordinates through a video2text transforming module. These trajectories are then fed into an LLM to generate the reward function, which in turn is used to train the policy. To enhance the quality of the reward function, we develop a video-assisted iterative reward refinement scheme that visually assesses the learned behaviors and provides textual feedback to the LLM. This feedback guides the LLM to continually refine the reward function, ultimately facilitating more efficient behavior learning. Experimental results on tasks involving bipedal and quadrupedal robot motion control demonstrate that our method surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art LLM-based reward generation methods by over 37.6% in terms of human normalized score. More importantly, by switching video inputs, we find our method can rapidly learn diverse motion behaviors such as walking and running. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

WiNet: Wavelet-based Incremental Learning for Efficient Medical Image Registration

Deep image registration has demonstrated exceptional accuracy and fast inference. Recent advances have adopted either multiple cascades or pyramid architectures to estimate dense deformation fields in a coarse-to-fine manner. However, due to the cascaded nature and repeated composition/warping operations on feature maps, these methods negatively increase memory usage during training and testing. Moreover, such approaches lack explicit constraints on the learning process of small deformations at different scales, thus lacking explainability. In this study, we introduce a model-driven WiNet that incrementally estimates scale-wise wavelet coefficients for the displacement/velocity field across various scales, utilizing the wavelet coefficients derived from the original input image pair. By exploiting the properties of the wavelet transform, these estimated coefficients facilitate the seamless reconstruction of a full-resolution displacement/velocity field via our devised inverse discrete wavelet transform (IDWT) layer. This approach avoids the complexities of cascading networks or composition operations, making our WiNet an explainable and efficient competitor with other coarse-to-fine methods. Multi-view shape descriptors obtained from various 2D images are commonly adopted in 3D shape retrieval. One major challenge is that significant shape information are discarded during 2D view rendering through projection. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network based method, CenterNet, to enhance each individual 2D view using its neighboring ones. By exploiting cross-view correlations, CenterNet learns how adjacent views can be maximally incorporated for an enhanced 2D representation to effectively describe shapes. We observe that a very small amount of, e.g., six, enhanced 2D views, are already sufficient for a panoramic shape description. Thus, by simply aggregating features from six enhanced 2D views, we arrive at a highly compact yet discriminative shape descriptor. The proposed shape descriptor significantly outperforms state-of-the-art 3D shape retrieval methods on the ModelNet and ShapeNetCore55 benchmarks, and also exhibits robustness against object occlusion.

Short carrier lifetimes is a key challenge limiting the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells. In this work, for the first time, lanthanide europium (Eu) ions have been introduced into Ag-incorporated CZTSSe absorber layer, which can modify the selenization reaction pathway during the initial selenization process, leading to high-quality (Ag, Eu)-CZTSSe absorber with large compact crystal grains and benign surface potential fluctuations. This innovative absorber engineering can also optimize defects dynamics with less detrimental defects and defects-assisted non-radiative recombination. Thus, significantly enhanced minority carrier lifetimes from 0.97 to 3.15 ns can be achieved, representing one of the top values among various bulk and/or interface engineering treated CZTSSe. The champion CZTSSe thin-film solar cell exhibits an impressive VOC of 545.6 mV, accompanied with a stimulating increase in PCE from 10.61% to 13.30%. These findings underscore the potential of lanthanide cation doping to drive significant advancements in CZTSSe photovoltaic technology, and therefore promoting its further development and future applications. © 2024, The Authors. Urban Water Sprinkler Routing: A Multi-Depot Mixed Capacitated Arc Routing Problem Incorporating Real-Time Demands

Fugitive road dust (FRD), as one of the major pollutants in the city, poses great harm to the environment and the physical health of citizens. A common countermeasure adopted by government agencies is employing on-road water trucks (sprinklers) to spray water (sprinkle) on urban streets to reduce the FRD. Currently, the traveling routes of sprinklers are usually planned based on drivers’ experience, which may lead low operation efficiency and could not respond to the real-time sprinkling demands. To address these issues, this study formulates the routes planning of sprinklers as a multi-depot mixed capacitated arc routing problem with real-time demands with the aim of minimizing the sprinklers’ travel distance. We develop an improved adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) algorithm that incorporates a tabu-list and a perturbation mechanism to solve this problem. Furthermore, a problem-specific acceleration mechanism is designed to reduce unnecessary search domains to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Empirical experiments are conducted based on various scenarios and the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm generates solutions that are superior or at least comparable to the solutions generated by the traditional ALNS algorithm but with significantly lower computation time. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to explore the effects of relevant parameters on the results. This study is the first to incorporate real-time FRD pollution information, gathered through multiple data sources via IoT technology, into urban sprinkling operations, extending the traditional CARP from a tactical planning to a real-time operational environment. Vflh: A Following-the-Leader-History Based Algorithm for Adaptive Online Convex Optimization with Stochastic Constraints

This paper considers online convex optimization (OCO) with generated i.i.d. stochastic constraints, where the distribution of environment is changing and the performance is measured by \textit{adaptive regret}. The stochastic constraints are disclosed at each round to the learner after the decision is made. Different from the previous non-adaptive constrained OCO algorithm which is generalized based on the traditional online gradient descent algorithm, we propose a novel \textit{Virtual queue based Following-the-Leader-History} (VFLH) strategy to make the constrained OCO algorithm adaptive and design the VFLH algorithm. In this setting, the algorithm firstly generalizes all the experts in the specified time interval, then decides the optimal decision with each expert and gives out the final choice by combining the predictions of active experts. In terms of the algorithm performance, there are two performance metrics to be evaluated, i.e., the bounds of constraint violation and regret. For the constraint violation, we bring in the multi-objective drift analysis approach to deal with the constraints via a virtual queue which provides a new method to bound the constraints violations. For the regret, we give out its upper bound and then achieve a corresponding lower bound that proves the upper bound is sufficiently tight. Finally, we provide some numerical experiments to validate the feasibility of our algorithm. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
