An overview on IRS-enabled sensing and communications for 6G: architectures, fundamental limits, and joint beamforming designs

This study presents an overview on intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)-enabled sensing and communication for the forthcoming sixth-generation(6G) wireless networks, in which IRSs are strategically deployed to proactively reconfigure wireless environments to improve both sensing and communication(S&C) performance. First, we exploit a single IRS to enable wireless sensing in the base station's(BS's) non-line-of-sight(NLoS) area. In particular, we present three IRS-enabled NLoS target sensing architectures with fully-passive, semi-passive, and active IRSs, respectively. We compare their pros and cons by analyzing the fundamental sensing performance limits for target detection and parameter estimation. Next, we consider a single IRS to facilitate integrated sensing and communication(ISAC), in which the transmit signals at the BS are used for achieving both S&C functionalities, aided by the IRS through reflective beamforming. We present joint transmit signal and receiver processing designs for realizing efficient ISAC, and jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and reflective beamforming at the IRS to balance the fundamental performance tradeoff between S&C. Furthermore, we discuss multi-IRS networked ISAC, by particularly focusing on multi-IRS-enabled multi-link ISAC, multi-region ISAC, and ISAC signal routing, respectively. Finally, we highlight various promising research topics in this area to motivate future work.

Cloud-based AI services offer numerous benefits but also introduce vulnerabilities, allowing for tampering with deployed DNN models, ranging from injecting malicious behaviors to reducing computing resources. Fingerprint samples are generated to query models to detect such tampering. In this paper, we present Intersecting-Boundary-Sensitive Fingerprinting (IBSF), a novel method for black-box integrity verification of DNN models using only top-1 labels. Recognizing that tampering with a model alters its decision boundary, IBSF crafts fingerprint samples from normal samples by maximizing the partial Shannon entropy of a selected subset of categories to position the fingerprint samples near decision boundaries where the categories in the subset intersect. These fingerprint samples are almost indistinguishable from their source samples. We theoretically establish and confirm experimentally that these fingerprint samples' expected sensitivity to tampering increases with the cardinality of the subset. Extensive evaluation demonstrates that IBSF surpasses existing state-of-the-art fingerprinting methods, particularly with larger subset cardinality, establishing its state-of-the-art performance in black-box tampering detection using only top-1 labels. Traditional unlearnable strategies have been proposed to prevent unauthorized users from training on the 2D image data. With more 3D point cloud data containing sensitivity information, unauthorized usage of this new type data has also become a serious concern. To address this, we propose the first integral unlearnable framework for 3D point clouds including two processes: (i) we propose an unlearnable data protection scheme, involving a class-wise setting established by a category-adaptive allocation strategy and multi-transformations assigned to samples;(ii) we propose a data restoration scheme that utilizes class-wise inverse matrix transformation, thus enabling authorized-only training for unlearnable data. This restoration process is a practical issue overlooked in most existing unlearnable literature, i.e., even authorized users struggle to gain knowledge from 3D unlearnable data. Both theoretical and empirical results (including 6 datasets, 16 models, and 2 tasks) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed unlearnable framework. Air pollution source tracing, which mainly identifies and analyzes the specific sources that lead to air pollution, is a prerequisite for preventing and controlling air pollution. Traditional source analysis methods are sensitive to insufficient or inaccurate data and rely on extensive data collection, which consumes much time, labor and financial resources. Therefore, this study proposes a VIME-XGBoost two-stage model, which can learn efficient data representations from limited data and significantly enhance cross-city pollution source resolution. The model combines the self-supervised learning framework in VIME (Value Imputation and Mask Estimation) with XGBoost Regressor, and the rich features are obtained by Feature Vector Estimator and Mask Vector Estimator in VIME, which are transferred to XGBoost Regressor for nonlinear learning. Real air pollution data from five cities in China are used in the study. The average R 2 reaches 0.84, and the average prediction error of the pollution sources among the five cities is less than 1%. Comparing the experimental results with other models, VIME-XGBoost shows stability and accuracy across cities and different pollution sources and has excellent generalization ability, providing a powerful and effective solution for pollution source analysis and environmental data prediction.

As software engineering advances and the code demand rises, the prevalence of code clones has increased. This phenomenon poses risks like vulnerability propagation, underscoring the growing importance of code clone detection techniques. While numerous code clone detection methods have been proposed, they often fall short in real-world code environments. They either struggle to identify code clones effectively or demand substantial time and computational resources to handle complex clones. This paper introduces a code clone detection method namely Toma using tokens and machine learning. Specifically, we extract token type sequences and employ six similarity calculation methods to generate feature vectors. These vectors are then input into a trained machine learning model for classification. To evaluate the effectiveness and scalability of Toma, we conduct experiments on the widely used bigCloneBench dataset. Results show that our tool outperforms token-based code clone detectors and most tree-based clone detectors, demonstrating high effectiveness and significant time savings. © 2024 ACM.

Software systems often encounter various errors or exceptions in practice, and thus proper error handling code is essential to ensure the reliability of software systems. Unfortunately, error handling code is often bug-prone, while sufficiently testing them is challenging as such code often cannot be triggered under normal conditions. Motivated by this, recent studies have proposed to leverage software fault injection (SFI) based fuzzing to discover potential bugs in complicated error handling code. Despite the promising results achieved, their effectiveness and efficiency are still compromised in practice due to the huge search space of error sites, inadequate fuzzing guidance, and the overhead induced by context-sensitive SFI. To achieve effective and efficient testing of error handling code, this study presents AFL-FI, which first utilizes a similarity-based method to identify suspicious error sites, and then incorporates the idea of error site coverage to guide the fuzzing process. Finally, the design of lightweight context-sensitive SFI enables AFL-FI to execute test cases efficiently. We evaluate AFL-FI on eight large-scale open-source projects, and the results show that it can outperform existing state-of-the-art fuzzing tools significantly in terms of branch code coverage. More importantly, AFL-FI has discovered 13 previously unknown bugs, and all of them have been confirmed while 12 of them have been fixed. Besides, our evaluation also demonstrates that all the key designs of AFL-F I are effective that contribute significantly to its overall performance. © 2024 IEEE.

User-generated content is daily produced in social media, as such user interest summarization is critical to distill salient information from massive information. While the interested messages (e.g., tags or posts) from a single user are usually sparse becoming a bottleneck for existing methods, we propose a topic-aware graph-based neural interest summarization method (UGraphNet), enhancing user semantic mining by unearthing potential user relations and jointly learning the latent topic representations of posts that facilitates user interest learning. Experiments on two datasets collected from well-known social media platforms demonstrate the superior performance of our model in the tasks of user interest summarization and item recommendation. Further discussions also show that exploiting the latent topic representations and user relations are conductive to the user automatic language understanding. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents a scientometric analysis of the research landscapes, hotspots, and emerging frontiers of combinatorial optimization algorithms on graphs from 1987 to 2022. The study investigates technical maturity, country/region collaboration, institutional cooperation, journal co-citation, dual graph overlay, and hotspot frontier analysis based on co-citation and keyword co-occurrence using tools like CiteSpace, Bibliometrics R, and VOSviewer. The analysis reveals that research in this field has entered a mature stage, and countries such as the United States, China, and Japan have produced rich output in this field. The university of Tokyo, MIT, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong university, Stanford university, and the university of California have formed 10 distinct collaborative clusters. The findings also suggest that research in the field of combination optimization mainly comes from two clusters, namely, computer science and mathematics, and that cross-disciplinary knowledge is also involved. In the field of graph-based combination optimization, deep learning, machine learning, graph neural networks, and reinforcement learning are now areas of intense investigation. The frontier direction of research in this field is represented by quantum computing technologies such as coherent ising machines, hybrid quantum-classical algorithms, and quantum algorithms. The research problems in this field are categorized into three main types from a keyword perspective: graph theory problems, classical optimization problems, and open problems. The corresponding methods for solving these problems are also categorized into combinatorial optimization techniques, stochastic optimization methods, and machine learning-based optimization methods.
