Powered by the massive data generated by the blossom of mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) devices, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have developed both in accuracy and size in recent years. Conventional cloud-based DNN training incurs rapidly-increasing data and model transmission overheads as well as privacy issues. Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a promising solution by facilitating DNN model training on edge servers at the network edge. However, edge servers often suffer from constrained resources and need to collaborate on DNN training. Unfortunately, managed by different telecoms, edge servers cannot properly collaborate with each other without incentives and trust. In this paper, we introduce PipeEdge, a scheme that promotes collaborative edge training between edge servers by introducing incentives and trust based on blockchain. Under the PipeEdge scheme, edge servers can hire trustworthy workers for pipelined DNN training tasks based on model parallelism. We implement PipeEdge and evaluate it comprehensively with four different DNN models. The results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art schemes by up to 173.98% with negligible overheads. © 2023 ACM.

Automatic speech verification (ASV) authenticates individuals based on distinct vocal patterns, playing a pivotal role in many applications such as voice-based unlocking systems for devices. The ASV system comprises three stages: training, registration, and validation. The model refines using voice data in training, extracts vocal features in registration, and contrasts these with speech patterns in validation. Modern ASV models, primarily grounded in DNN architectures, require extensive data for training. Federated learning (FL) fosters model-sharing across multiple clients while ensuring data privacy. Due to its open architecture, FL is vulnerable to backdoor attacks. However, training a stealthy backdoor attack in FL presents challenges, including diminished attack generalization owing to data heterogeneity, and conspicuous triggers that render them easily detectable. In this paper, we propose a Federated Stealthy Backdoor Attack method ($FedSBA$). FedSBA aims to improve the attack model’s generalization, enhance its persistence, and elude anomaly detection under the heterogeneous data distribution. FedSBA constructs an attack model based on a personalized transformer and encompasses a stealthy trigger. Moreover, we also propose a defensive strategy that utilizes an adaptive weight aggregation scheme. The stealthiness and effectiveness of FedSBA are demonstrated by exhibiting superior performance in comparison to previous works.

Recent progress regarding the use of language models (LMs) as knowledge bases (KBs) has shown that language models can act as structured knowledge bases for storing relational facts. However, most existing works only considered the LM-as-KB paradigm in a static setting, which ignores the analysis of temporal dynamics of world knowledge. Furthermore, a basic function of KBs, i.e., the ability to store conflicting information (i.e., 1-N, N-1 and N-M relations), is underexplored. In this paper, we formulate two practical requirements for treating LMs as temporal KBs: (i) the capacity to store temporally-scoped knowledge that contains conflicting information and (ii) the ability to use stored knowledge for temporally-scoped knowledge queries. We introduce a new dataset called LAMA-TK which is aimed at probing temporally-scoped knowledge, and investigate the two above requirements to explore the LM-as-KB paradigm in the temporal domain. On the one hand, experiments show that LMs can memorize millions of temporally-scoped facts with relatively high accuracy and transfer stored knowledge to temporal knowledge queries, thereby expanding the LM-as-KB paradigm to the temporal domain. On the other hand, we show that memorizing conflicting information, which has been neglected by previous works, is still challenging for LMs and hinders the memorization of other unrelated one-to-one relationships. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Temporal graph processing is used to handle the snapshots of the temporal graph, which concerns changes in graph over time. Although several software/hardware solutions have been designed for efficient temporal graph processing, they still suffer from serious irregular data access due to the uncoordinated graph traversal. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes SaGraph, a domain-specific hardware accelerator to support the efficient processing of temporal graph. Specifically, temporal graph processing shows strong data access similarity, i.e., most graph accesses of the processing of different snapshots are the same and usually refer to a small fraction of vertices. SaGraph can dynamically coordinate the graph traversals and adaptively cache the vertex states to fully exploit the data access similarity for smaller data access overhead. We implemented and evaluated SaGraph on a Xilinx Alveo U280 FPGA card. Compared with the cutting-edge software and hardware solutions, SaGraph achieves 8.5×-157.3×, 4.2×-16.1× speedups and 34.7×-423.6×, 5.3×-14.7× energy savings, respectively.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as pivotal tools for infrastructure inspection, mitigating risks to human life and enhancing operational efficiency. Despite advancements, achieving autonomous surface coverage inspection in GPS-denied environments remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel approach to enhance UAV policy learning for surface screening of urban infrastructure in environments lacking GPS. Utilizing Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), the methodology enables UAVs to autonomously conduct surface coverage inspections more robustly and efficiently. A key innovation is the Optimal Speed Decision (OSD) model, which allows UAVs to adjust flight speed dynamically based on scene perception, enhancing efficiency and safety. Additionally, an Off-Policy Critic-Based Reward Shaping (OPCBRS) method is introduced to improve learning efficiency and performance by addressing the issue of sparse rewards using offline data. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of these methods, with the OSD model demonstrating significant improvements in navigating complex scenarios and maintaining a balance between efficiency and robustness over traditional uniform speed policies. This research offers a robust framework for UAV-based infrastructure inspection in GPS-denied environments, advancing autonomous UAV applications.

In recent years, the global repercussions of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants have posed significant challenges to various areas, including the economic order, transportation, healthcare, and education, and the mitigation and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases have received much attention. This paper tries to develop a rational and effective intervention strategy in response to the dynamic evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. To address this issue, we first use the SEIR model to analyze the population distribution under the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, and then integrate a deep Q-neural network (DQN) to reflect an economic quantification model contextualized within the SARS-CoV-2 scenario. Next, we propose an evolutionary deep reinforcement learning to generate an optimal and adaptive intervention strategy, by optimizing the weight sequence of the DQN. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in maximizing economic benefits, while ensuring the uninterrupted functionality of medical institutions. Importantly, the learned intervention strategy exhibits the applicability to other infectious diseases.

VCformer: Variable Correlation Transformer with Inherent Lagged Correlation for Multivariate Time Series Forecasting

Multivariate time series (MTS) forecasting has been extensively applied across diverse domains, such as weather prediction and energy consumption. However, current studies still rely on the vanilla point-wise self-attention mechanism to capture cross-variable dependencies, which is inadequate in extracting the intricate cross-correlation implied between variables. To fill this gap, we propose Variable Correlation Transformer (VCformer), which utilizes Variable Correlation Attention (VCA) module to mine the correlations among variables. Specifically, based on the stochastic process theory, VCA calculates and integrates the cross-correlation scores corresponding to different lags between queries and keys, thereby enhancing its ability to uncover multivariate relationships. Additionally, inspired by Koopman dynamics theory, we also develop Koopman Temporal Detector (KTD) to better address the non-stationarity in time series. The two key components enable VCformer to extract both multivariate correlations and temporal dependencies. Our extensive experiments on eight real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of VCformer, achieving top-tier performance compared to other state-of-the-art baseline models. Hair editing is a critical image synthesis task that aims to edit hair color and hairstyle using text descriptions or reference images, while preserving irrelevant attributes (e.g., identity, background, cloth). Many existing methods are based on StyleGAN to address this task. However, due to the limited spatial distribution of StyleGAN, it struggles with multiple hair color editing and facial preservation. Considering the advancements in diffusion models, we utilize Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) for hairstyle editing. Our approach introduces Multi-stage Hairstyle Blend (MHB), effectively separating control of hair color and hairstyle in diffusion latent space. Additionally, we train a warping module to align the hair color with the target region. To further enhance multi-color hairstyle editing, we fine-tuned a CLIP model using a multi-color hairstyle dataset. Our method not only tackles the complexity of multi-color hairstyles but also addresses the challenge of preserving original colors during diffusion editing. Extensive experiments showcase the superiority of our method in editing multi-color hairstyles while preserving facial attributes given textual descriptions and reference images.

Aptamers are single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides that selectively bind to specific targets, making them valuable for drug design and diagnostic applications. Identifying the interactions between aptamers and target proteins is crucial for these applications. The systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment process, traditionally used for this purpose, is challenging and time-consuming. The resulting aptamers often suffer from limitations in stability and diversity. Computational approaches have shown promise in aiding the discovery of high-performance aptamers, but existing methods are usually constrained by insufficient training data and limited generalizability. Recently, advancements in pre-training large language models have offered a new avenue to mitigate the dependency on large datasets. In this study, we propose a novel method to predict aptamer-protein interactions using large language models within a contrastive learning framework. Experimental results demonstrate that our method exhibits superior generalization and outperforms existing approaches. This method holds promise as a powerful tool for predicting aptamer-protein interactions.
