Single image defocus deblurring (SIDD) aims to restore an all-in-focus image from a defocused one. Distribution shifts in defocused images generally lead to performance degradation of existing methods during out-of-distribution inferences. In this work, we gauge the intrinsic reason behind the performance degradation, which is identified as the heterogeneity of lens-specific point spread functions. Empirical evidence supports this finding, motivating us to employ a continual test-time adaptation (CTTA) paradigm for SIDD. However, traditional CTTA methods, which primarily rely on entropy minimization, cannot sufficiently explore task-dependent information for pixel-level regression tasks like SIDD. To address this issue, we propose a novel Siamese networks-based continual test-time adaptation framework, which adapts source models to continuously changing target domains only requiring unlabeled target data in an online manner. To further mitigate semantically erroneous textures introduced by source SIDD models under severe degradation, we revisit the learning paradigm through a structural causal model and propose Causal Siamese networks (CauSiam). Our method leverages large-scale pre-trained vision-language models to derive discriminative universal semantic priors and integrates these priors into Siamese networks, ensuring causal identifiability between blurry inputs and restored images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CauSiam effectively improves the generalization performance of existing SIDD methods in continuously changing domains. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Due to the ubiquitous presence of missing values in real-world datasets, an imputation algorithm can recover the missing values and provide users with a complete dataset that utilizes all the available observed information. However, most of the imputation methods still have several limitations, including cannot restore the original distribution, handling various data missing patterns, and high missing rate dataset. In this poster, a novel neural network-based two-stage missing value imputation (abbreviated as TS-MVI) method is proposed to fill an incomplete condition attribute with the optimized attribute values for the supervised learning task. By initializing the missing values with random numbers, the imputation values are iteratively adjusted based on the new updating rule by minimizing both the autoencoder-oriented objective function and neural network-based classification error. The persuasive experiments show that TS-MVl method significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art imputation methods and thus demonstrate TS-MVI is a viable approach to deal with the missing value imputation problem.

Emerging Non-Volatile Main Memory (NVMM) technologies generally feature high density, low energy consumption and cost per bit compared to DRAM. However, the limited write endurance of NVMM poses a significant challenge of using NVMM as an substitute for DRAM. This paper proposes a space-oblivious compression and wear-leveling based memory architecture to improve the write endurance of NVMM. As memory blocks of many applications usually contain a large amount of zero bytes and frequent values, we propose a nonuniform compression encoding scheme that integrates Zero Deduplication with Frequent Value Compression (called ZD-FVC) to reduce bit-writes on NVMM. Moreover, we leverage the memory space available through compression to achieve an intra-block wear leveling policy. It rotates the writing positions of a compressed data block within the data’s initial memory space, and thus enhances write endurance by balancing the bit-writes per NVMM cell. ZD-FVC can be integrated into the NVMM module and implemented entirely by hardware, without any intervention of Operating systems. We implement ZD-FVC in Gem5 and NVMain simulators, and evaluate it with several programs from SPEC CPU2006. Experimental results shows that ZD-FVC is much better than several state-of-the-art approaches. Particularly, ZD-FVC can improve data compression ratio by 55% compared to Frequent Value Compression. Compared with the data Comparison Write, ZD-FVC is able to significantly improve the lifetime of NVMM by 3.3X on average, and also reduces NVMM write latency by 31% and energy consumption by 19% on average. © 2020 36th International Conference on Massive Storage systems and technology, MSST 2020. Prototype-based clustering algorithms have garnered considerable attention in the field of machine learning due to their efficiency and interpretability. Nonetheless, these algorithms often face performance degradation when confronted with high-dimensional or non-ellipsoidal data distributions. To surmount these challenges, this study introduces a novel clustering approach, dubbed Clustering with Adaptive Graph learning and Spectral Rotation (CAGSR). In CAGSR, the imposed spectral rotation operation mitigates the discrepancy between the membership matrix, which adheres to the notion of fuzzy clustering, and the spectral representations derived from an adaptive graph rather than a predefined one. This enables the generation of a comprehensive representation of the data across multiple spaces. Furthermore, the clustering and graph learning tasks are jointly optimized in a projected subspace, which can effectively reduce the adverse impact caused by irrelevant features in the original space. The proposed method seamlessly integrates fuzzy clustering, graph structure learning, and spectral rotation into a unified model, facilitating the detection of intrinsic structures. Experimental evaluations conducted on benchmark data sets substantiate the effectiveness of CAGSR when compared to related clustering approaches.

To process large-scale real-time data streams, existing distributed stream processing systems (DSPSs) leverage different stream partitioning strategies. The one-to-many data partitioning strategy plays an important role in various applications. With one-to-many data partitioning, an upstream processing instance sends a generated tuple to a potentially large number of downstream processing instances. Existing DSPSs leverage an instance-oriented communication mechanism, where an upstream instance transmits a tuple to different downstream instances separately. However, in one-to-many data partitioning, multiple downstream instances typically run on the same machine to exploit multi-core resources. Therefore, a DSPS actually sends a data item to a machine multiple times, raising significant unnecessary costs for serialization and communication. We show that such a mechanism can lead to serious performance bottleneck due to CPU overload. To address the problem, we design and implement Whale, an efficient RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) assisted distributed stream processing system. Two factors contribute to the efficiency of this design. First, we propose a novel RDMA-assisted stream multicast scheme with a self-adjusting non-blocking tree structure to alleviate the CPU workloads of an upstream instance during one-to-many data partitioning. Second, we re-design the communication mechanism in existing DSPSs by replacing the instance-oriented communication with a new worker-oriented communication scheme, which saves significant costs for redundant serialization and communication. We implement Whale on top of Apache Storm and conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate its performance with large-scale real world datasets. The results show that Whale achieves 56.6x improvement of system throughput and 97% reduction of processing latency compared to existing designs.

With the digitization of modern cities, large data volumes and powerful computational resources facilitate the rapid update of intelligent models deployed in smart cities. Continual learning (CL) is a novel machine learning paradigm that constantly updates models to adapt to changing environments, where the learning tasks, data, and distributions can vary over time. Our survey provides a comprehensive review of continual learning methods that are widely used in smart city development. The content consists of three parts: 1) Methodology-wise. We categorize a large number of basic CL methods and advanced CL frameworks in combination with other learning paradigms including graph learning, spatial-temporal learning, multi-modal learning, and federated learning. 2) Application-wise. We present numerous CL applications covering transportation, environment, public health, safety, networks, and associated datasets related to urban computing. 3) Challenges. We discuss current problems and challenges and envision several promising research directions. We believe this survey can help relevant researchers quickly familiarize themselves with the current state of continual learning research used in smart city development and direct them to future research trends. A novel random sample partition-based clustering ensemble (RSP-CE) algorithm is proposed in this paper to handle the big data clustering problems. There are three key components in RSP-CE algorithm, i.e., generating the base clustering results on RSP data blocks, harmonizing the based clustering results with maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) criterion, and refining the RSP clustering results. RSP data blocks have the consistent sample distributions with the whole big data and thus provide the possibility for using base clustering results on different data subsets to approximate the clustering result on whole big data. The experimental results in comparison with other 5 well-known clustering ensemble algorithms on 4 big data sets show that RSP-CE algorithm obtains the better normalized mutual information (NMI) values and Fowlkes-Mallows Index (FMI) values with the less training time consumptions and thus demonstrate that RSP-CE algorithm is a viable approach to deal with the big data clustering problems.

Re-identification (ReID) of individuals across different cameras is a challenging task due to the high-quality large-scale datasets required for the model. Intra-camera supervised (ICS) person re-identification has been proposed to address the high cost of annotating large-scale datasets, but reducing the gap between camera domains remains a major challenge. Current approaches use intra- and inter-camera learning with contrastive learning performed separately in both phases. However, the effect of features from the same person under different cameras on the model during inter-camera learning, and the fine-grained characteristic where the same person can be classified into multiple classes based on the camera labels, still require further research. To address this issue, we propose a Camera-Based Contrastive Learning (CBCL) method that moves features away from their respective cameras and closer to other cameras to reduce domain gaps. We also introduce an Intra-Person Camera Adversarial (IPCA) loss that effectively utilizes fine-grained characteristics of person re-identification and improve IPCA by introducing camera labels to obtain IPCA_2 which achieves better model recognition performance than IPCA alone. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods and is comparable to fully-supervised methods.

Low-light images are commonly encountered in real-world scenarios, and numerous low-light image enhancement (LLIE) methods have been proposed to improve the visibility of these images. The primary goal of LLIE is to generate clearer images that are more visually pleasing to humans. However, the impact of LLIE methods in high-level vision tasks, such as image classification and object detection, which rely on high-quality image datasets, is not well explored. To explore the impact, we comprehensively evaluate LLIE methods on these high-level vision tasks by utilizing an empirical investigation comprising image classification and object detection experiments. The evaluation reveals a dichotomy: While Low-Light Image Enhancement (LLIE) methods enhance human visual interpretation, their effect on computer vision tasks is inconsistent and can sometimes be harmful. Our findings suggest a disconnect between image enhancement for human visual perception and for machine analysis, indicating a need for LLIE methods tailored to support high-level vision tasks effectively. Malware scanning of an app market is expected to be scalable and effective. However, existing approaches use syntax-based features that can be evaded by transformation attacks or semantic-based features which are usually extracted by expensive program analysis. Therefore, to address the scalability challenges of traditional heavyweight static analysis, we propose a graph-based lightweight approach MalScan for Android malware detection. MalScan considers the function call graph as a complex social network and employs centrality analysis on sensitive application program interfaces (APIs) to express the semantic characteristics of the graph. On this basis, machine learning algorithms and ensemble learning algorithms are applied to classify the extracted features. We evaluate MalScan on datasets of 104,892 benign apps and 108,640 malwares, and the results of experiments indicate that MalScan outperforms six state-of-the-art detectors and can quickly detect Android malware with an f-value as high as 99%. In addition, there are also significant improvements in the robustness of Android app evolution and robustness to obfuscation. Finally, we conduct an exhaustive statistical study of over one million applications in the Google-Play app market and successfully identify 498 zero-day malware, which further validates the feasibility of MalScan on market-wide malware scanning. © 2004-2012 IEEE.
